Random Chat / k this is like the mother of all help topics
« on: August 19, 2008, 05:59:50 PM »
i really didnt want to put this in computers. so my main hard drive died the other day and after a lengthy and tiresome battle with both shitty retail services and my technological incompetence, i now have a new hard drive and power supply and i'm running off a clean slate windows xp, having lost everything on the old drive. the problem now, is i cant get the internet to run. i found one place that said i should install ethernet drivers. the thing is i have no idea what to look for as there are a ton of downloads on the intel site. i could use any and all information that would be useful to someone with a totally blank hard drive.

Computing / Web Hosting assistance
« on: August 04, 2008, 05:28:10 PM »
k so i'm looking to set up some stuff, and i need to buy a web hosting plan or whatever. whats with these sites that say they have unlimited space and bandwidth for like $5.00 per month? like these guys: http://www.startlogic.com/startlogic/hosting.bml  I can't see anywhere where it says in exchange for the space they put ungodly amounts of ads on your site or whatever. would someone mind explaining what the deal is, and basically tell me what i should buy? Probably not more than $20 per month would be great. I would also like to be able to host whatever i want in terms of media. I think I've seen some stuff that limits you to real media and MIDI or something like that.

Random Chat / epic history video project. NOW WITH ACTUAL VIDEO!
« on: June 02, 2008, 08:06:54 PM »
dont stop after the first segment. they get exponentially better as the movie goes on. the monologues are hit-and-miss.

It's not as shitty as most high school video productions. I'm the goofy-ass mofo that can't act in the green suit. Name is Grant Roe if you watch the credits. We spent 15 bucks each for the suits at goodwill. Filmed for two days about 6 hours per day. Editing took full time work for the next 3 days. We're going to be making a bunch of movies this summer, using people better than us as actors. should be fun.

i suppose i should explain what this is. we had to make a video in the style of forrest gum that takes place in each decade from the 60s to the present. each person in our group, and the camera guy who doesn't actually have the class, took a turn as forrest in each scene. the person playing forrest gives the monologue before that scene.

apparently i can't embed the vid, so here's the link.

Gaming / Spore
« on: February 09, 2008, 01:09:53 PM »
Didn't see a thread for it. Shame.

I've probably been anticipating this game more than any other in my life. I've probably put more time into "god games" and rts games like the sims or sim city and things like that than any other genre.

http://www.xspore.com/spore_videos.html (It's the top one)

This video came out a couple days ago and I think it's fascinating. It's a 30 minute demo all about the space phase of the game. I'm not through all of it yet but there have been several things I didn't know that Will talked about. One is that in a remote section of the galaxy that's very hard to find, there is our solar system with earth and all the other planets. Another is that at any part of the game, like the editors or if you're bombing a colony or something, you can record videos and save them or even upload them directly from the game onto a youtube account.

So yeah. I just like talking about all of the possibilities.

Random Chat / My Big Project
« on: January 26, 2008, 07:44:31 PM »
This may belong in Games, but I figured it would get more traffic here.

K so here's the deal. It's getting to the point in my life to where I feel I should start thinking about what to make of myself. I've been thinking of the things I'm good at and the things I enjoy doing. The one thing I keep coming back to is editorial journalism. I enjoy writing and I feel I'm fairly proficient at it. I also enjoy video games. These two combined led me to video game journalism. I read ign, joystiq, and other game sites and blogs on a daily basis. I feel I'm comfortable enough with the format to effectively pursue it myself.

If I can get all of the pieces together, I want to put together a game blog in the style of joystiq or kotaku. It would focus on all of the normal stuff like previews, reviews, news, game culture, opinion articles and editorials and any other creative ideas that may present themselves.

The purpose of my posting this here is that frankly, I need your help. I need advice, input, ideas, technical help, anything you can give me. I'm thinking that the site would have a small core writing staff in charge of main projects like news and reviews, and we could have people we know or invite people that visit the site to write any kind of opinion piece of editorial and submit them. The core staff would screen those submissions and publish the good ones and either reject or send the others back for revision.

To be honest, I don't see this idea taking off and becoming the next ign, although it would be awesome if it did. I see this idea as more of a platform to get some experience and build a portfolio in a career path that I find interesting and hope others might want to share with me. Thanks for reading all of this; even if you aren't interested. 8)

Random Chat / Future Predictions
« on: January 03, 2008, 06:07:22 PM »
I know we're all interested in technology, and I thought this was pretty interesting.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Kurzweil#Future_Predictions

This guy is some kind of famous inventor or something, and he has all these predictions for technology of the future.

"Human body 3.0 (as Kurzweil calls it) comes into existence. It lacks a fixed, corporeal form and can alter its shape and external appearance at will via foglet-like nanotechnology. Organs are also replaced by superior cybernetic implants."

"Devices that deliver sensations to the skin surface of their users (i.e.--tight body suits and gloves) are also sometimes used in virtual reality to complete the experience. "Virtual sex"--in which two people are able to have sex with each other through virtual reality, or in which a human can have sex with a "simulated" partner that only exists on a computer--becomes a reality."

There's a ton of them. Just thought I'd share.

Computing / HDD Help
« on: December 30, 2007, 01:23:33 PM »
I'm in the market for a new hard drive, preferably an external because there's no more room inside my computer. I'm looking for somewhere in the 500GB range, and I found some on Newegg for around $130-$150. The thing I'm worried about is that a lot of reviews for external hard drives, on just about all of them, say that they crap out really soon. It's like, one review will say they've had it since 1834 and they threw it from a plane into the Hiroshima a-bombing and they went home to find it sparkling on their front lawn as good as new. The next will say they plugged it in and the case fell apart and left a steaming pile of shit on the desk.

So I need help finding a high-capacity, relatively cheap, operationally reliable, external hard drive.
