Random Chat / H1N1 Vaccine
« on: December 19, 2009, 06:58:46 PM »
Discuss.

Just got the vaccine today, only to go along with my folks, since I live with them.  Now everyone is 'safe' and hopefully we don't get sick from the shot. I don't remember the last time I received a normal flu shot, and I haven't ever had the flu. Hmm.

Computing / computer wishlist [the realistic one]
« on: March 20, 2009, 03:56:42 AM »
Okay, we all do it. We drool over newegg, building things fantasy or realistically. Well, I was tired of building the ultimate fantasy PC, and finally threw together something doable.

Tell me what you think OR most importantly if something is incompatible [I'm human]. Also,  I plan on using my current LCD monitor, DVD drive, and wireless N antenna, hence why none are in the list.

Case - $110
Power - $42
Mobo - $120
CPU - $170
Video - $85
RAM - $90
HDD - $55

Total: $672
Note: all these items will most likely be purchased one at a time and assembled later.

Computing / Firewall? OR Sasser virus thread
« on: March 05, 2009, 04:10:33 PM »
I've never had an active firewall for as long as I remember. I just read an article on Firewalls because I want to know why people use them. Ever since my folks upgraded to DSL, we've always had a linksys router. First, the model that was supplied to us via Earthlink [i.e.: ended up shitting on us], and last year at some point I went ahead and bought a WRT150N, which has been superb IMO.  In the article, it explains that hardware firewalls [routers] are extremely secure and easy to configure.  I have static IPs set up on my network [like my laptop never changes from 192.168.1.102, as an example.] I forward certain ports for uTorrent and other games/etc that need it.

Do I NEED a firewall? I've only had a bad viral infection via limewire when I used to use that, and that was due to my own stupidity at the time. [some virus with a hello kitty logo] Ever since then, I just scan every week or more than once a week with Spybot and Ad Aware. I also use the Powersuite from Uniblue every once in a while to speed things up, clean the registry, etc.  I never see my PC [any of them] slow down or get infected just through normal internet browsing. It would have to be deliberately downloaded adware hax/keygens warez kind of shit for me to get anything remotely bad. The worst I've had it since the hello kitty thing are tracking cookies, and everyone has that.

Ideas? comments, etc.

I live in AZ so my pick is obvious. Yes it's currently in the second half, but I was working so I couldn't post this.

Time to get back to the game.

edit: and in the end, the cardinals are still the cardinals, and the steelers are lucky.

Anyone else play?

So I went to an AC/DC show.
3rd Row seats, my folks WON them from a hand drawing from 100.7 KSLX.
Just to put it in perspective, people were paying over $1,000 dollars from brokers from eBay/other sources. The guy and his kid sitting next to us lucked out as well, because they got the tickets from a scalper for face value [about $125 each] 10 minutes before AC/DC came on. He probably just felt like he'd rather get face than eat the tickets' cost. But anyway, onto the show...

Computing / Audio file [mp3] skipping
« on: October 15, 2008, 01:10:25 AM »
So I've had this issue for a while now, and I don't know what to do about it anymore to fully remedy the problem.

Whenever I play any mp3, either on my internal HD, or external [via USB], at random points in the mp3 file, it skips/hiccups/whatever, but continues playback.

What I've done:
Cleaned up PC using "powersuite'
Read up here
Reinstalled sound drivers
Replaced OMEGA Radeon drivers w/ original Radeon drivers. [thought this would be the good fix]

Halp.
I'm a real stickler for sound quality/performance, so unless I just listen to the files on my zune and only that, I can't do it on the PC, it's just too frequent and annoying.

What else could this be.. They were running all so perfectly before. The only thing I've changed is using the Omega drivers, and software here and there, but none that would affect the playback of my mp3 files in ANY program that does so [billy, foobar, winamp, WMP, etc]
