Title: The Anti-UT99 Server Thread
Post by: Spectere on September 06, 2007, 04:03:56 PM
I don't care for how they implemented dodging in UT99.  At all.  UT2k3/4 improved it considerably by allowing players to adjust the double-tap speed.  It was far too easy to dodge off of a platform (in, say, CTF-LavaGiant) in the original so I just turned it off all the time (which put me at a disadvantage at times...oh well).

I didn't pub too much either.  I wasn't bad (though being on dial-up and having to face LPB tranceiver whores got old REALLY fast...thank goodness they set a limit on that shit) but eh.  I was more heavily into Action Quake 2 at the time, anyway.

Has anyone else ever played AQ2?  It's freaking sweet.  Way better than AHL (aka everybody freaking dive EVERYWHERE like a bunch of twats).

Nah, I didn't, I honestly still haven't finished playing through Quake 2's SP, although I've been working on it. I got it with the special edition of Quake 4, along with the expansions, but forgot about it until a couple weeks ago. I'm just irritated at the last couple levels, and I'm having more fun playing Granado Espada, and raping people multiplayer than shooting really ugly strogg, rofl.

I never did play AHL, but I looked into it a couple years ago. The only similar thing I've played is The Specialists, which kicks serious ass. I freaking love that mod :V

The Specialists is pretty awesome.  Science and Industry is a jolly good Half-Life mod, too.

What pisses me off about the Half-Life games is that everything winds up getting eclipsed by Counter-Strike.  CS is okay but I hate how it literally killed off every other mod in existence.

Eh, kind of. S&I was pretty freaking awesome, I agree, but there's still plenty of mods people play. With TS3.0 coming out a couple months ago, there's a good amount of people playing that, and the bigger mods like Sven and NS are still alive and kicking. It's just a pity all the really awesome stuff like Rocket Crowbar died off :(

That's the thing, unless your team is a hype-generating machine your mod is going to die.  It's not like I remember during the Quake/Quake2 days where there wasn't really a single SUPERMEGAPOPULAR mod.  You could find just as many servers for Action Quake 2 as you could for TW CTF as you could for TDM as you could for Weapons Factory.

With Half-Life, it's like "oh, S&I: four servers...TFC: 1000 servers, 2 with humans in them...CS: 849328943 servers, all full."

For the record, I'm bitter because a lot of awesome mods that I used to play died out as CS got bigger (and, incidentally, started to get less and less balanced and more and more sucky by that time).

It's kindah mandatory for every other thread on this site to get derailed.

:o well it's given birth to tons of mods (hide and seek, platforms, zombie, soccer) plus left 4 dead was inspired by zombie mods for css.

That, and team fortress 2, supar smash, metal gear, devil may cry (just a littel now that I hear that it's not based around Dante), Crysis and Bioshock are the only games I'm interested in.

That's still a pretty hefty list. TF2 looks pretty awesome, and with Fortress Forever coming out later this month, it'll be interesting to see which is more awesome :V

Imma be playing that, believe me.

See above topic. I'll probably end up playing them both.

^ the list is probably bigger, but I don't feel like listing things (spore, command n conquer, starcraft 2, wow expansion possibly.) Also what's fortress forever?

It's a mod for HL2 that's devoted to basically cloning TFC, except with source graphics. It was announced before TF2 was.

It was announced before TF2 was.

TF2 was announced a long-ass time ago, if you want to be technical.  Development started with Quake 2 sometime around 1997-1998, then it moved to GoldSrc (HL1 engine -- derived from the Quake engine) when the developers were contracted to make it by Valve, then it became a standalone product, it got uberhyped in magazines, E3, etc, then nobody heard anything about it for a long time, then it was announced that it was going to come out after HL2, then it never happened, then they said it was going to come out with Episode 2 and Portal.

Yeah well that's nitpicking. Fortress Forever was announced before TF2 was announced to actually still exist.

I really hope the don't delay it more. It looks like they've made some for progress with it so I doubt they will.

So, Duke Nukem Forever all over again, then?

We should merge this with the UT99 Server Thread again and see what kinds of radiation are produced from the resulting annihilation!

Game rocks. Haven't tried TF2 at all so I really wouldn't know which one is better.

I've got a friend who has played it (preordered orange box), and says it's freaking incredible, which is really impressive, coming from him. He's a tournament-level quake player, and pretty much thinks everything sucks unless it is ideal for competition, so that means TF2 will probably not fail.
