I took a quick look around and didn't see one of these, so here you go!
Both of these are from my laptop. The first one is my XP install (basilisk), the second one is my main Gentoo install (amethyst). Click to enlarge.

Well, I posted it a while back (just the image itself) but here's my desktop. I've cleaned it up a couple times, but I still have a ton of torrents on it, lol.

Oh hay, I got sum old snake in metal gear REX.
-
Eww, win98 style taskbar... After having moved to XP, I realized how terribly ugly win98 is. I use the oldschool start menu, because I am used to it, and like it, but other than that, I really like the way XP looks compared to 98... :/. I used to not mind/like the win98 interface before I moved to XP.
-
I really don't like how XP looks, it's really bright and everything looks rounded. I've just got used to my gray over the last few months.
-
To each their own, I guess. I like the rounded features, and the colors. I like the default blue color they use. Though that green is disgusting, and the silver is also hard to look at. I dunno, I just like my system to have some color. I also like the way most linux GUIs look.

New desktop. It's an artist's rendition of what the BlueGene Supercomputer racks look like.
Desktop is actually is 2880 px wide, lol. At least it's not 4000 x 3200 like the original image is.
-
Oh wow Bobbias, I thought my desktop was bad.
-
What sort of nightmare monitor do you have?! D:
-
It's a dual screen setup, 2 Acer AL1916W 19 inch widescreen monitors.
-
Oh, alright. That makes sense then. I couldn't figure out what sort of crazy thing you would need to run a single monitor at a resolution like that, unless it's a really massive CRT.
-
Well, it's also have to be a weird shape, since my screens run 1440*900, so my screen is 2880*900. Kinda wide, even for widescreen...
-

playing in winamp is the rave music when you enter the gate thing in killer 7, its win.

Oh and what is this from, I really have no clue :3.
its not from anything, its just art. (when i was a weeaboo browsing /a/ back in the day i figured this out)

It's a damn good image though.

Weird, I've seen like 5 or 6 random photos of the same person posted on /v/ a while back, also I wish all games had graphics like Killer 7.

i think i won this thread without even having a wallpaper

click for big, obviously
custom samurize, hmmxp theme (this is the best theme for xp, by the way. it's taking modern colors and aesthetic and applying it to a theme similar to windows classic)
if you're wondering how i launch my apps, i use the best program ever made: launchy (google it). it pops up with a quick alt+tab, and i can type in any entry on the start menu. it has automatic completion too so you don't have to type in "mozilla firefox" every time you launch firefox (just type "fir" or "f" or whatever)
-
So... sterile : |

The mind boggles.

._. wow
minimalist mucho?

fine, sheesh

Kirby and Team Fortress...a winning combination.
Nice filename. XD
-
I wasn't bitching, but minimalist is NOT my cup of coffee... I need some sort of background, especially considering I use my desktop, not the start menu (well, unless there's something not installed with an icon or something).
-
Oh wow, Demo man kirby makes me lol.
-
(http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/3999/desktopoe3.jpg)
new desktop isn't surprising, the videos in the third column are lets plays of la mulana, a long going lp that im working my way through.
uhh the winamp files in the third column are tali voice clips for the german, italian, and french, voice actresses. she sounds suprisingly good in german, and id originally thought the french would be better.
umm and the bottom of that is the new dj sharpnel album.
i think i explained everything. i actually like throwing stuff on my desktop now rather than just keeping it blank, just not keeping the desktop TOO cluttered.
-
Yeah, the dektop is really useful, but when it gets as cluttered as mine do, it can become a problem. Albeit most of the stuff on there doesn't ever get used, I just hate filing it away in the dark recesses of my computer in case I might actually use it.
-
well ya see, theres a little folder called "my documents" and i use it. for all my other garbage, i have my vlads stuff folder. easy to use, nothing really gets lost.
-
I guess I should post mine:
I never got around to reinstalling Windows XP. Also, I hardly use the shortcuts at the bottom anymore. Most of the stuff I do is straight from the terminal. There's no terminal shortcut because I just hit Ctrl+` whenever I need to open one.
-
Nice, Ever since I started hacking my MyBook, I've learned a lot of terminal stuff too, considering I have to SSH into it to do anything, lol.
-
When I saw that picture I started laughing hysterically, probably more than what was called for.
-
I didn't even notice that, but that is awesome.
-
(http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/4572/wallpaperhk8.jpg)
was only avalible in 1024x768 so its a tad blurry, but its leigh, and i can't much complain about that.
also, my desktop seems to be getting more cluttered, i will most likely fix this...eventually.
umm and speaking of leigh, axer updated his page some month ago with 21 new color images. link is here (http://axerindustries.com/index.php), and just about all of the art is worksafe(maby 5 or 6 nsfw images out of 80 or so), but i wouldn't reccomend viewing at work/school just incase you accidentally click a nsfw image. good stuff, the man knows how to drawl/color his work.
tiny text for those interested in the wallpaper/artist of the wallpaper, those not interested need not read.
*edit* slightly cleaned up desktop

that blows rocks, man. hope you come out relatively clean from it. fighting viruses and trojans and shit really sucks. :-(
-
Well, we know what it is (i forget now, but we did find out) and most of the "fighting" has yet to really take place, since I have only done some precursor stuff, like using hijack this and such. I'm gonna track down the main files, unlock them and delete them without explorer loaded,a nd reboot.

after a bit of work, i cleansed my desktop of most of its icons.

im pretty sure y'all s'pected id get one of these newfangled diablo 3 wallpapers.

Whole movie right here:
I laughed much harder then I should have.
-
I thought the movie was good in terms of the ideals behind it.. like kind of a 'what if' approach, and I can totally see America becoming like that. Also I enjoyed the fact that the directors/writers didn't even need an extensive amount of dialogue to explain shit. Wall E and Eve's body language, combined with just the visuals of the entire movie, made it really clear what point they were trying to get across.
But yea, good movie and everyone should stick to my one liner-synopsis above.
lol.

Fuck desktop icons.
WORD TO THAT
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v126/sqthreer/desktop0710.jpg)
-
Desktop icons are borderline useless on single-monitor setups, aside for shortcuts to games and such (since you generally don't have a ton of things running when you start those). On a multi-monitor setup they are actually useful in some cases.
My desktop has the current issue of being TOO FUCKING BIG, but my main monitor has a clean desktop, since that's where I usually do my work, and my second display has four icons that I use for my RAW editing "workflow" (in quotes since it's not too efficient...me needs me some Capture One 4).
-
I stick everything I might want at some point on my desktop. Essentially, if I didn't download it form a torrent, and I haven't thrown it into some other folder after sitting on my desktop for ages, it's on my desktop.
-
Nigga dats boring

Would you be kind enough to upload the left wallpaper? The colors really pop on my monitor, but being saved as jpg makes the quality suck.
:>
-
Well, you could download the one he linked to, crop it, and save as a PNG. That would save it from getting mangled by the shitty jpg output in paint.

No offense bobbias, but obviously. Not only that, but I'd not like to have to not deal with the desktop icons.
-
I'd forgotten about that, but there isn't much damage done to that version... Now, saving a jpg as a jpg again in paint WILL quickly make things look like ass.
-

Sure, here you go: http://files.spectere.net/pictures/wallpapers/not_mine/bowsermkw_1920.jpg (http://files.spectere.net/pictures/wallpapers/not_mine/bowsermkw_1920.jpg)
It goes amazingly well with any dark theme. I'd recommend using the Zune theme if you're still running XP.
I threw a bunch of widescreen wallpapers in that folder as well, all 1920x1200 I believe. This isn't my complete collection but they are some of the better ones. Feel free to browse through them at your leisure: http://files.spectere.net/index.php?dir=pictures/wallpapers/not_mine/ (http://files.spectere.net/index.php?dir=pictures/wallpapers/not_mine/). I'll probably add to it periodically, so bookmark it if interested.
Well, you could download the one he linked to, crop it, and save as a PNG.
Uh...the image that I uploaded already lost a fuckton of quality simply from me making it download-friendly. Besides, it's not a huge deal for me to upload an image. <_<

Also, AIR RAID SIREN.
To bad it's not one of the Old Guy from Pheniox Wright...I would have died laughing if you did have on like that.
-
Uh...the image that I uploaded already lost a fuckton of quality simply from me making it download-friendly.
I noticed after seeing the original :/ I'm way too used to seeing jpeg artifacts in my images that unless one has been re-encoded with paint once or twice, I barely notice it unless I see the original.
-
To bad it's not one of the Old Guy from Pheniox Wright...I would have died laughing if you did have on like that.
I played through the first Phoenix Wright twice, okay. I don't want to look at von Karma anymore. :P Also, him holding the taser is definitely a superior image.
I noticed after seeing the original :/ I'm way too used to seeing jpeg artifacts in my images that unless one has been re-encoded with paint once or twice, I barely notice it unless I see the original.
Ah, yeah, good point.
JPEG artifacts annoy the shit out of me to the point where I wouldn't even use a wallpaper if they were visible at 100% magnification. I get annoyed by pretty much any visual artifact (hence the reason I prefer PNGs for all of the images I save locally). Streaming video is generally just "tolerable" for me -- I much prefer to download things at a higher quality whenever possible. Perfect example: when the Angry Video Game Nerd videos all moved over to GameTrailers I started to get a little giddy simply because I had the option of downloading higher-quality WMVs instead of dealing with YouTube and/or Revver.
-
(http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l94/mortifiedocalot/desktopnow.jpg)
Too many god damned desktop icons.
-
Dude, don't even talk about "too many icons", My left screen is full, and my right screen has space for one more icon.
Streaming video is generally just "tolerable" for me -- I much prefer to download things at a higher quality whenever possible.
I tried downloading some AMVs in 1920x1080 because it was available. Unfortunately, my computer actually couldn't play them fast enough :/ Yes, I'm getting AMVs so big they are bigger than my entire screen, because I'm practically obsessed with video quality. I also like to make custom ffdshow profiles for different videos and such.
-
Yes, I'm getting AMVs so big they are bigger than my entire screen, because I'm practically obsessed with video quality.
Eh, the way monitors are going nowadays it never hurts to have the extra resolution. Considering that even store-bought OEM systems are shipping with 21+" displays nowadays (most seem to at least support 1650x1050 from what I've seen) it's not going to be long before they're mainstream. Whenever I find wallpapers at 2560x1600 (rare, generally you only see that with photographs) I just leave it as-is and scale it down appropriately. I collected 1600x1200 wallpapers before I even had a monitor that was capable of using that resolution for the same reason -- because there's no point in downloading the lower resolution image if you have broadband and a decent amount of hard drive space.
-
Yeah, I was pissed when my computer bogged down when I tried to play it.
-
New (for me at least) but older PC I bought from my dad.
-120 Gig of hard drive.
-1.3 MHTZ Atholon Proccessor
-512 RAM
-ATi 9800 Radon Video Card (Used to have a nVidia G-Force 2 but it died T_T)
-CD Drive and a Burner
-
That would be GHz, not MHTZ. the z is small, and there's no T in MHz, and if it was a 1.3 Mhz processor, it would be REALLY slow compared to just about anything you could think of.

Hell yes Objectdock, you are the best idea Mac ever had.
It's a lot less fun when you're relying on it to be a task bar as well. On a real Mac, the Dock gets cluttered like you wouldn't believe. I can't stand it.
It's fine as a launcher, but that's about it in my experience.

Emulators are fine and dandy as long as they don't come bundled with ROM dumps or other copyrighted material. All they are is simulated hardware and, occasionally, reverse engineered components.
Linking to ROM sites (aside from freeware or public domain ones) is bad juju, of course.
How is Speedfan? I was thinking of getting it but it slipped my mind.
Quite good.
One thing to keep in mind is that it doesn't support all systems. If it doesn't work on yours you might have to find a hardware monitoring utility designed specifically for your motherboard.
-
Yeah, I was gonna point out that it didn't always work. I've tried it on my laptop, and nothing, and I only have minor control on my desktop.
-
I'm not seeing any desktops in here....

Mine's an attachment on the last page.

with the exclusion of boobies, I'm not seein any desktops.

hay guiz I don't think Apple ever used this processor in their computers. :x

Everything seems to work okay (aside from my X-Fi, but my onboard will do, and the fact that my memory is showing up as 667MHz DDR2 when it's actually 800MHz DDR2). I was even able to get Core Image and Quartz Extreme to work on my graphics card after a little bit of hair pulling and kext wrangling.
Note: Do note the lack of drive "Zwei." You will be missed, poor little Samsung... :(

I Can Has Model?
Lmao, nice one.
A rather interesting hax. I'd like to try OSX, but I honestly think I'd prefer a fancy desktop on linux, lol. Plus, the whole "close etc. buttons on left side" would forever fuck me up.
-
It's not so bad when you use it a little bit. Then again, I do have a real Mac, and deal with a few Mac-dominant customers at work, so that probably helps.
The main reason that I'd probably advise against getting a Hackintosh together is the amount of work involved. While it's a bit easier than it was when I first tried it out (my old computer had an ideal combination of hardware...I was very lucky) it's still rather error-prone (for example, I have to limit the usable RAM to 2GB on my system, otherwise I'm plagued with kernel panics). The further you deviate from Apple's specs the harder it gets (my video card was kind of a pain to get working, and nForce motherboards, like mine, can be problematic).
My main motivation for getting OS X working is so that I can play around with it at home. Like I said, I still have a real Mac, but it's rather old (QuickSilver model with a PowerPC G4 733MHz), can only run Tiger, and is about as slow as a original Pentium running Windows XP. Seriously, it's godawful. But yeah, I wanted to get a Leopard system together so that I could learn about it. I'm going to try to get Snow Leopard on it next, though I have a feeling my chipset is going to cause me more grief. Oh well, the next board I get (when I upgrade to a Core i7 or whatever fancy new CPU they have at the time) will probably have an Intel chipset. I haven't been too impressed with the nForce chipset in general.
-
Ahh, well, I was never very interested in a hackintosh anyway, and I certainly don't have the money right now, so it was more of an observation on the interface in general. I'm sure I'd get used to it eventually, but before I get used to it, I'd have so much trouble with that. I'm used to closing things by reflex in windows by moving the cursor to the top-right corner by just moving the mouse till it would have gone past the top right corner.
-
You can install OS X on just about anything, so money really isn't an issue. The only real question is how much will actually be supported. The only time you really have to spend any money is if you want a hackintosh that is capable of running with a completely vanilla installation; then you'd have to buy hardware to suit Apple's kexts (kernel extensions, essentially drivers).
As far as the close button issue goes, like I said, it's really not hard to retrain yourself. When I bought my PowerMac in 2002 it didn't take me very long to adjust, and that was my first Mac. The hardest part is when you get thrown curveballs. For instance, Firefox on the Mac keeps the close buttons on the right of each tab. That's harder to deal with than the close buttons on the windows being on the left (of course, I usually wind up middle-clicking on the tabs to close them anyway, but it's still a bit disorienting).
-
I'm glad someone else uses the middle click to close thing.
-
I'm glad Microsoft made it an integral part of the Windows 7 taskbar. It's used to open a new instance (if you middle-click on an application that's already running) or to close a window (if you middle-click on the specific window in the thumbnail view). It's outstanding.
But, alas, we're getting pretty off-topic here. :x We should probably cut it out.

Here's my laptop with my new windows 7 upgrade <3 mmm

Wow, Fedora doesn't suck anymore. By that I mean that I didn't have to modify half as much as I would if I actually wanted to make Ubuntu useful. Fedora supports exotic things such as the ability to change your IP address out of the box*, with no modification or Debian-esque h4x-jobs. What a concept!
God dammit, I can't keep up this sarcasm anymore. Even fucking Windows 3.1 let you change the fucking IP without giving you any bullshit. Fuck Ubuntu and its feeble attempt at hand-holding.
In all seriousness, Fedora has come a long way since I last used it (FC9, I think?). I certainly don't feel dirty using it as a staging environment like I am now.
Anyway, here's a screenshot of what I have going on now (clicky to enlarge, per usual):

*I am not shitting you. There were several Ubuntu releases that would not retain your network settings unless you went in, uninstalled NetworkManager, and vim'd /etc/network/interfaces. If I wanted to use Debian, I'd use fucking Debian.

Picture attached because I'm too lazy to use photobucket.
I finally installed Fences, and man is it useful.

Fuck yeah Calvin and Hobbes. Also, fuck yeah to almost all of the games on your desktop. You have good taste, my friend. Needs moar Deus Ex.
Anyhoo, here's my laptop. I think the last screenshot I posted from it was when it was still running XP, so here ya go (clickie to enlarge):

I have it somewhere. Funny how I play less then half of the games on there now.

Crapton of icons, lol. Fences is an awesome addon though! Really, you can keep so much more on your desktop (or available by scrolling a small scrollbar down a bit), and keep it organized as well. Plus, it doesn't actually add any invisible folders or anything, so all those extra files are still in the desktop folder.

Looks handy. Kind of looks like the desktop folder view feature that KDE4 has.
I'd probably use it if I could actually see my desktop. I just use the taskbar for everything. :x Honestly, if the Windows 7 taskbar had an option to put folders directly on it, I'd probably use that in lieu of everything else. Hmm, perhaps I should write something that does that...

I really am liking having two monitors, even if one of them has a backlight that's close to failing.

CASUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALS.
YEP!
but that is a massively handy way to organize your shit. Most iPhones are just pages and pages of random things.
Yep. iOS 4 introduced a pretty neat-o folder view. Before that, you either had to designate certain pages for certain tasks (what I used to do on my work iPhone 3G) or jailbreak it and use something like CategoriesSB (what I currently do on my work iPhone 3G, since I'm still running 3.1.3 on it). The biggest problem is that, without jailbreaking, you can only stuff 12 icons in each folder. I can see what Apple was trying to do (offer a way to see everything in a folder given the available screen size, without scrolling) but it's kind of annoying. The Internet and Puzzle folders on my iPod are full, so if I wanted to put more apps in those categories I'd have to create new folders.
Android had folders since forever, but they sucked then and they suck now (which seems to be the case with a lot of things with Android -- polish is not one of its strong points). I tried to organize the games that I have on my G1 into folders, but the only two operations that you can do on folders after they're created is drag things into them, drag things out of them, and rename the folders. You are unable to change the arrangement of icons in folders, and if you're as anal as I am about keeping everything alphabetized, that's a major problem. To keep a folder alphabetized, I literally have to drag everything out of the folder and then drag everything back into the folder in the order that I want. With iOS, you just drag the icons around the same way you do on the home screen. Funny how a concept as basic as rearranging icons has been overlooked in 7 major releases of Android.
-
Yeah, google seems to be rather lacking in doing nice things for their users... Sure, they bitch about what shade of blue to use, and they are constantly working on improving their search (and yeah, I like the latest version of those pages) but anywhere else they seem to basically have no channel to communicate with the users, and just seem to basically ignore them (I'm looking at you youtube, and your damned ridiculous random video removal with no way to even contact anyone about it...)

What band is that? Is that GY!BE?

Nine Inch Nails! That was one of the few pictures that actually turned out well from the concert.
They put on quite the visual show.

Ahh, ok. Only reason I asked is because GY!BE is known for putting on visuals with their stuff, and I noticed some less than common instruments. That is an awesome picture.

Updated!
Looks very Windows Phone-ish and/or Zune-ish. I like.

I wound up acquiring a slightly newer Mac. It's a used iMac G4 (the one that everyone calls the iLamp). Unlike my other one, it's actually usable! I'm currently running Leopard on it and, since it actually runs it pretty well (i.e. I can't type faster than the system renders the text...like with my PowerMac G4) I think I'm going to leave it on that. I think I'd lose a lot by downgrading to Tiger.
But anyway, here's a screenshot. I kinda like the wallpaper.

Not much desktop here, but I may be working on something semi-intriguing here:

-
I see decompiled Minecraft code, a folder called SurvivalCraft (along with an SVN Repository for it), and a terminal apparently linked to a mincraft instance which is presunably running SurvivalCraft stating that you just broke your right leg after a somewhat nasty fall. Intriguing indeed...
-
SVN?! Gross! You know, there is a rule on here about flaming other people. ;)
And yeah, that's a bit of a pet project that I decided to start working on. Ever since food and classic mode were introduced it kind of annoyed me that peaceful mode is still so watered down, so my idea is to turn it into a mode where you live off of the land, while simultaneously making the standard difficulty settings a bit tougher.
I'm pretty impressed with how easy the Minecraft code is to modify and expand upon. I've never really worked with Java before, so I've found that to be more of a roadblock than deciphering Notch/Jeb's code (and it's really not hard to adjust to Java if you know C++ and/or C#).
-
Yeah, C++ to java doesn't have that much you need to relearn, and C# to Java has even less. I learned some Java in highschool and coming from C+ I was at home with the language, and since moving to C# I was amazed at how much C# just basically felt like C++ and Java had a baby lol.
-
Yeah, going from C++ to C# or Java is a bit more daunting than going between C# and Java. I think it's mostly because Java and C# were both designed from the get-go to be object-oriented languages, while C++ essentially bolts OOP features to a pure procedural language. That being said, there is plenty to be confused at when switching between C# and Java, though that mainly has to do with naming conventions (i.e. CamelCase with C# and camelBack for Java -- it's hard to keep myself from typing .ToString() instead of .toString() after six years of writing C#), getting to know the various packages to use the language features, and things like that. In some ways, the similarity of the two languages makes the transition a bit harder, since it kind of makes you do the wrong thing out of habit. Fortunately, it's all things that would get picked up by the compiler and nothing that would cause serious code breakage.
-
Yeah, you've got a good point, small differences like that can really get annoying sometimes, lol.
Was the Minecraft code obfuscated after you decompiled it? I've been thinking of taking a look at some of the code to see how the game does some stuff.
-
Fortunately, many of the common functions are the same. The main difference is the case. The transition has been easier than I thought, which is surprising as I'm not even using an editor with autocomplete. I've been using Notepad++ because I fucking hate Eclipse and NetBean (to be fair, I've only used them to edit PHP, but I honestly can't see their incredibly intrusive, borderline-obnoxious, and virtually unconfigurable auto-correction being any better with Java, even if it is made for it).
And yeah, Minecraft's code is obfuscated. Fortunately, there is a package called the Minecraft Coder's Pack (http://mcp.ocean-labs.de/index.php/MCP_Releases) that makes developing it much easier. It's a Python-based set of development tools that deobfuscates much of Minecraft's source code, provides you with a means of testing your code outside of your live %appdata%\.minecraft directory, and allows you to easily reobfuscate the code, even splitting off the class files that changed so that you could easily package and distribute them. It's fantastic.
I'm still holding out for the official mod development kit, if that ever comes to fruition. One of my motivations for using source control (Mercurial, because it rocks the shit out of CVS/SVN...Git's cool, too) is because I'm too lazy to use patch. :p
-
Ahh. I hope the mod development kit does come out.... There are plenty of cool mods as it is, but making it more accessible would allow amateur modders the ability to jump in and start making changes without worrying about the headaches that come with making unsupported mods.
I think if I ever work on a project large enough to warrant using source control, Ill look into Git. I hear it's pretty cool.
-
Mercurial is another great source control package, and I prefer it to Git because I started using that one first. ;) In all seriousness, I do find myself liking TortoiseHg far more than Git Extensions. Git Extensions would work great on a system with a limited screen resolution, but TortoiseHg makes better use of its space.
Regardless of which one you choose, both of them have a similar workflow. You clone projects (rather than checking them out) and, if you have write access, you simply push your changes up to the server to be checked over and/or merged by the project maintainer. The best part is that you don't have to go through the hassle of setting up a server to handle it; it can do everything locally with no fuss.
SVN/CVS are fucking awful in comparison.
