Am I the only one here who has not done any of this? Ever?

Just curious.

unless you're including social drinking without getting drunk or buzzed, anyway

You may want to invest in a spiked codpiece.

A little more on topic, Armstrong blocks all ports < 1024 for residential connections, which is basically bullshit. I've got HTTP up on port 8080 and SSH on port 2222, so I guess it's just a minor annoyance in my interim server setup, but I'm still pissed about it.

But seriously, we need to get together for an FFA trip or something one of these weekends when I get a bit more moolah in the bank.  I'm a bit on the dry side at the moment.

"or something", yeah. I love FFA, but I'm not gonna get back into playing dancey stuff until I have something to stop the migraines I get when playing. A trip up on one of their nickel nights or something would be cool, though.

EDIT: so what're you doing the rest of the weekends this month? I think Jeff should be here the weekend of the 28th - 31st, if you want to hang out at the house. (Bring Rock Band.)

Nah, it isn't going to the floor. I'd know if the brake lines were leaking. :P After that stop, the pads have ceased to really 'bite' (not that they were ever great. but you could feel when they made contact). They've been through no fewer than four emergency stops (that I can name offhand), and they were crappy Monro Muffler brake pads to begin with. (I've sworn off the chain after horrible experiences with the East Liverpool branch and reviews of other shops with the same thing - tl;dr they tried to charge me $460 to replace a wheel bearing + hub assembly and used craptastic parts in previous 'repairs')

They aren't squealing, but they're definitely giving too much leeway for my comfort, so they're going ASAP.

Maybe I'd help if you didn't specifically plan things on days that I'm not free. XD  Seriously, there were about three weekends where I sat at home for the most part, and the one weekend where my schedule is booked you decide to move part of a huge and unwieldly arcade machine. :p

You're welcome to contact us as well about hanging out or whatever. For the past <long period of time>, it's only been me asking you about stuff and I never have any idea what your schedule is like :-X

Anyone here happen to be familiar with brake pads and brands? My brake pads have definitely had it, thanks to this fucking idiot who came to a dead stop at a flashing yellow light to yield the right of way for someone at a red light.

Ahem.

I've been eyeing up some Akebono ceramic brake pads (specifically these) and wanted to know if I should run away in fear or if these should be a good buy.

EDIT: also shoutouts to OmegaOmni for helping me move (part) of a huge and unwieldy arcade machine, as well as witnessing the above and going to Pizza Hut afterward for delicious fooding.

I don't mind that it'd take forever, honestly - get me the tools, parts, and time to make it happen and I'll do it - but I'm a terrible welder and I'm not sure where to get the welding brackets (aside from torching them off a junked third-generation J-body). Other than that, I'm totally willing to put a week or two into making it happen. Hell, if I didn't have to pay for the materials, I'd do it as soon as finals week is over. I hate my car's transaxle. The gearing isn't great, the torque converter makes throttle response terrible and loses a lot of power, and the torque converter clutch is finicky at best in cold weather; it won't engage at all until the engine's almost completely warm, which screws with the gearing, since it normally engages the clutch in the middle of 3rd gear (to make the ratio drop less dramatic).

Programmer + simple math + transmission geekery = this comparison of the manual and automatic transaxles used in my car.

Getrag F23 stats [ed. - manual transaxle]
MPH per 1000 RPM:
        1st (3.580:1): 5.387
        2nd (2.020:1): 9.547
        3rd (1.350:1): 14.285
        4th (0.980:1): 19.678
        5th (0.690:1): 27.949
Final drive ratio: 3.840

Daewoo 4T40E stats [ed. - automatic transaxle]
MPH per 1000 RPM:
        1st (2.960:1): 6.398
        2nd (1.626:1): 11.648
        3rd (1.000:1): 18.939
        4th (0.681:1): 27.811
Final drive ratio: 3.910

This will work for any geared transmission as long as you know the gear ratios, final drive ratio, and the wheel size. Any requests? :V

On a related note, if my car's automatic transaxle eventually dies, everything else is still good, and I have the money, I'm gonna swap it out for a manual transaxle. Been looking into it for a while (morbid curiosity) and it's actually not too terrible: drop the engine block, remove the transaxle and torque converter, apply flywheel and clutch housing, install clutch pedal and hydraulic control, apply transaxle, weld two mounting brackets into place, replace engine block. Get the ECU reflashed or pick one up from a junked manual car in the meantime.

My car's still running strong, but I hate my transaxle more than everything else about it combined and would love to replace it when it dies rather than getting a new car. Parts and tools look to be close to $1000, which is barely enough to buy a clunker running on borrowed time.

I suppose you could ask just the opposite question -- why on earth does the 360 and the Wii make such a huge goddamn deal over transferring data?  Especially the Wii.  Waiting for that overglorified GameCube to transfer data from internal storage to SD is agonizing.

My guess would be "read block, write block, sync, repeat". That can be several orders of magnitude slower than asynchronous read/write operations, especially when flash memory is involved.
