Title: Good PS2 RPGs
Post by: Fractilion on November 26, 2007, 03:47:45 AM
I haven't been buying any ps2 games so now it's time. Tell me a good RPG. And don't just say like, Xenosaga. I'm sick of only hearing about that game. No Final Fantasy either. Everybody already knows those games. Surely there are more PS2 RPGs than these?

If you don't mind PS1 games, you could get the Lunar series. Those are some totally kickass games.

Wait a few hours and I'll basically list every PS2 game I own.

Digital Devil Saga and Shadow Hearts: Covenant are the best RPGs in the last 5 years though so start there.

And I'm still going to say Xenosaga because I get fucking tired of people complaining about how many cutscenes there were in the first game.

I fell asleep during one of the cutscenes once. XD

It is a great game, you just make sure you're feeling pretty awake when you sit down and play it.

Digital Devil Saga
Own it, never finished it, but yeah, it's really good if you can get it. A little annoying to find, but not completely unreasonable.

Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Almost finished it, all I need to do is Black Forest and the last 3 wolf bouts, and I'm missing a few of Anastasia's moves. Fantastic game. And you -can- play it without playing the first one, I did, it does a pretty good job of covering the stuff you missed. I still kinda wish I'd played the first one first to get the Kato/Ouka backstory, but oh well.

Don't worry. I've played MGS2 so long cut-scenes aren't new territory for me.

Shadow Hearts: Covenant

I went on a game hunt for that today. After a Best Buy, a Movie Trading Company, and 3 Gamestops, I came up with the original Shadow Hearts.

SH1's not bad and it'll give you more history with Yuri and Kato but 2 is most definitely 1002830824 times better in every way.

3's hilarious. If you like the idea of eastern european ninja businessmen who trained in Brazil under a drunken talking cat, you'll enjoy the game.

I'll be sure to look out for it.

If you like tactical RPGs, good ones to get are Final Fantasy Tactics, and anything made by NIS (ie Disgaea, Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom, Disgaea 2).  Also, don't get FFXII, game plays itself lolz.

That's an absolute lie about FF12. In fact, few things said could be considered as ignorant of how the game actually plays.

Digital Devil Saga was fun, could never beat mega nada on 2, so if you're looking for a "hard" RPG, that's good.

Fixed.

It's alright, boss fights are fun. I got pretty far in it then I just got bored. Plus it forces you to GRINDAN.

can anyone explain to me how Kingdom Hearts is supposed to be fun? Because it seems more like the most jumbled, scatterbrained, poorly organized game I've ever seen. Maybe one of the worst games I've ever played. Why is it popular?

DISNEY!

or

SQUARE!
...

IMO it's one of SQUARE's biggest mistakes as far as game making is concerned. It's refreshing to see someone else who doesn't like it.

I played the first Kingdom hearts and thought it was pretty meh. All magic seemed to be shooting some sort of element, you only get only use one button to do a "key" combo, and that gummi ship thing was retarded.

not only those two things you mentioned, the game element don't fit together. it's like there were 100 separate teams of designers that had no contact with eachother. also, the AI settings for goofy is fucking annoying. either he ALWAYS uses magic. or he never does.

also ALSO, the music in the beginning town sucks. i hate it so much. aaugh. the texturing in the whole game is crap, too. and the characters are like cardboard. all boring as shit and never say anything interesting.

I haven't even played it enough to notice that. I've played it once, and thought the gameplay itself was kinda fun, but not enough to save it from the disney aspect. And the random use of final fantasy characters. I HATE when they do that. If a game has characters from other games, it either should be like those fighter games and such, or it should have a DAMN good way to pull them into the plot.

I paid $8 and spent 40 hours of my time playing KH2. All to prove that I genuinely despise the series.

I could write an essay on how bad it is. ps it has more cutscenes than the entire xenosaga series

popularity of KH is simply an enigma. if you ask me, the fighting didnt even have much going for it. the combat is a total butcherization of Vagrant Story.

I barely got to fight much, lol. I just did the very opening stuff, and I've never played vagrant story. I wish I was more interested in gaming, but I find myself uninterested in just about every game ever made, and wishing a had a huge collection of oldschool RPGs and the systems so I could sit around and play SNES and Genesis all day, instead of all the newfangled systems :/

;-; I played the fuck out of both KH. I enjoyed them. When playing on hard, the optional battles are rather challenging. I beat KH2 Sephiroth at level 64 for fuck's sake. One hit from him auto-dropped me to 1HP. It took me hours to get a perfect run on him.

I want to try the JP ONRY version of it with all the special bosses. It looks hard as fuck.
