I ended up buying a PSP a couple of months ago and came to the realization that there aren't a whole lot of good, usable backgrounds available. Sure, there are 480x272 wallpapers out there, but oftentimes they either suck or clash with the white menu text (the color of which cannot be changed...naturally).
Naturally, I started up Photoshop and got to work.
So far, I have two of them done; more will probably come as I get bored (I'll update this thread and shit).
I'm going to keep an archive of them here: http://www.spectere.net/psp/wallpaper/ (http://www.spectere.net/psp/wallpaper/) but here's the two that I have finished as I type this (both are characters in the Sonic universe...woo):
Shadow: (http://www.spectere.net/psp/wallpaper/shadow.png)
Knuckles: (http://www.spectere.net/psp/wallpaper/knuckles.png)
They look a mite muted but that's intentional. The XMB is quite usable with both pictures, which is the main design goal.
For the record, the amount of work that I do on an average piece is generally cropping out the character, photoshopping a background behind him/her, and testing it on the system to be sure that everything is still readable. Not hard and I fail to see why so many people are apparently incapable of doing it. :P

It's called Lazy. Lots of people fall under that category.
Stupid covers the rest.
-
Heh, yeah, you pretty much nailed it.
-
Knuckles is hot.

OMG LOLI </random_outburst>

I might just steal my little brothers PSP just so I can do some mods to it. Snes roms plz.

SNES emulation doesn't run so well on it, in my experience. The three games that I really want to play (Super Metroid, Super Mario RPG, and Earthbound) don't run at full framerate, SMRPG being the worst of the lot by far. This is using what I believe is the latest version of SNES9x TTL.
-
Really? I've played Starfox 64 on my friends PSP, and IIRC it ran fine.

This is using what I believe is the latest version of SNES9x TTL.
and there's your problem ;)
I'm just a ZSNES fanboy, so ignore all my rants about ZSNES.
-
Um...ZSNES is written in x86 assembly. It is NOT going to run on a PSP. Ever. :/
-
Last I checked, wasn't ZSNES being rewritten in something else?
-
I glanced at the source and most of the entire emulation core and the graphics scalers are all written in ASM.
They'd pretty much have to rewrite everything.
-
I know, but that's the exact reason I like ZSNES, lol. It runs like a charm.
-
But bringing it up in a PSP thread is kind of moot, wouldn't you agree?
-
I was more referring to the emulation aspect...
And it was more or less for the purpose of making fun of Snes9x...
-
Yeah, except that SNES9x is pretty much the only choice for the PSP, so you just look like a jerk. ;)
I'll forgive you, though...this time.
-
Lol, looking like a jerk was kinda the point, but whatever. I remember when I first played Snes9x and thought it was cool, and then I found zsnes and noticed how much better things ran in it. I was hooked then.
-
sup. i liek snes9x and 1.43 is the version I have. (i guess the latest version... not in the mood to see)
and im sorta kinda thinking of getting a psp. either a psp or a cowon iaudio a2. so ya.

If you decide to go with a PSP, make sure that it's version 3.50 or under -- versions above that haven't been exploited yet. For some versions you'll also need a copy of Lumines (product code: ULUS-10002) and a specially prepared save file to allow you to run a downgrader. After you get it down to FW 1.50 the sky's the limit.
If I remember I'll post some links with more information when I get home.
