Title: How the FUCK can I start livestreaming on Youtube or twitch.
Post by: NewF on December 16, 2018, 12:37:14 AM
Seriously. I'm 100% lost.
If I can get some sort of full walkthru, literally step by step, so I can start livestreaming, that'd be great. Cause I wanna livesteam and game for everyone, but have literally NO IDEA how to get this shit going. I love  you all. Help me. :(

Install OBS
Spend 2 years learning how to operate OBS
Buy new PC because your hardware is out of date
Still have no idea what you're doing
???
Profit

But honestly, I barely know what I'm doing with streaming either. I've got a setup that works for recording video.

Pretty much what Bobbias said. x.x I know how to get things set up, but I'm not really at a level of comfort where I can give solid advice or a decent walkthrough. Every time I've streamed I've just sort of flown by the seat of my pants. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As someone who's done a bit of radio, did some recording one time for a YouTube thingie, participated in someone else's streaming event, and is an avid content consumer, I can give a little bit of general advice:

First (and most importantly), get a decent mic if you plan to talk and learn how to properly use it. The "using it" part seems obvious, but a surprising number of YouTubers and streamers don't practice decent technique and don't have good configuration. Get used to keeping your distance and inflection fairly even, if you can't use a pop filter (or are using a headset with limited capacity for one), make sure that you have your mic positioned in such a way that it isn't affected by plosives (loud bursts of noise caused by sounds like hard p's) and can't pick up your breathing. Running it through a compressor will help to even out the levels as well.

While this isn't essential, considering investing in a setup that will allow you to do live monitoring. If you use the right kind of headphones, it'll prevent game audio from feeding into the mic, will give you a solid idea of your audio mix in real-time, and will make it easier to keep your voice level consistent (if your voice starts to get lost in the mix you'll hear it instantly). I'm a fan of having an analog mixer taking care of the mix, since modifying mix settings can be done with a few slider/knob tweaks.

This should be doable on Windows, but when I was doing recording on my iMac I had a couple of USB interfaces (one for game/system audio and another for VoIP) going into a Behringer mixer, which then fed into the iMac. I'd set Discord or whatever to output through the VoIP interface and everything else to output through the general interface, and the computer's input would be the mixer's output. In total, the mixer had my mic and the two interfaces plugged into it, with a pair of headphones plugged directly into the mixer. I had full control with that setup. I could choose which channels went to both the master output and my headphones and which ones only went to my headphones. This would allow me to freely include VoIP audio in the mix if I wanted without having to dick around with OBS.

As far as the actual gameplay stuff is concerned, do a bunch of private recordings first and practice your commentary. This kind of serves a dual purpose, as it can get you familiar with OBS's interface as well as let you practice talking to yourself. It's one thing to talk to someone but it's another thing entirely to roll solo and just shoot the shit into a faceless microphone. If you're just starting out you're not going to have a big chatroom to interact with, so you're going to have to be comfortable with doing a lot of talking if you want to take that sort of approach. Playing back your own recordings will also help you identify any tics or behaviors that you might want to work on before going live (um's, ah's, excessive salt, etc) and give you a good idea of how you're going to sound to your listeners.

I know that wasn't exactly what you were looking for, but I hope it helps!

I just install OBS, trial and error settings till it looks good and that's about it.

A lot of nob switching, setting tweaking, but nothing too difficult.

I'm far from a PR0 STREAMUR but getting gameplay, audio, and a webcam up that looks somewhat visable ain't too bad.  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88_4ARd51nw)

Quality is bleh, but you deal with your hardware/internet limitations on that stuff. Though, I'm streaming to twitch, and uploading clips to youtube at my discression. I don't think it's too much different streaming to youtube isn't it?

Nah. It's just a matter of changing the URL that OBS is pointing to.

Tbh it's not hard to get the bare minimum (game capture, no overlays/cam/mic) set up. Once you get the url and set the basic stuff like bitrate/encoder up, your basically ready to go.

But I have no experience with any of the rest of it, so I can't help with specifics on any of that stuff. The most customization I've done was downscaling from 1440p to 1080p. I just record game video/audio to a file then manually upload to YouTube.

Most of my experience is with setting up cheap but effective audio solutions.

Y'know, if we combined our powers we could probably make a pretty solid guide, haha.

I think it's still vladgd, but I've barely on my PC due to back issues. Literally back pain mostly gone, because the time I've been on my PC in the entirety of 2018, is the time I was on my PC in a week in 2017. Recliner in the living room has been heavenly.

Contemplating getting a living room setup for my PC or laptop, but that's a topic for another thread. Would love to get back into fightans again, but in the current climate, favoring tekken 7, even though im horrible.

You may have misunderstood my last post, but let me clarify.

Im on my PC less than 2 hours a month now a days, the last time I was on my computer was last Wednesday, which ended in back pain I haven't had since February.

Im literally afraid of being on my PC for longer than 30 minutes due to the back problems.

Wife and I have done a number of streams using OBS or Streamlabs.

Do you still need any help?

Sure would. I'd like to be able to stream at the good smooth 60fps @ 1080p or higher if possible. I know nothing about the proper settings in OBS to make that happen properly, even with online guides. Shit's blurry and yuck in general  :-/

What service were you streaming to and what kind of rig are you running? Using Streamlabs or just OBS?

Was it a stream you tested or was it a recording you tested? If it was a recording were you savings it the same hard drive your game was running out of? Sometimes that can hurt your performance.

Iirc the default obs quality setting should be 6000 kb/s, or 6mbit. At 1080p 60 that should look ok, maybe not amazing but it should be fine for that. I have obs Dow scaling from 1440p to 1080p 60 with 6mbit as my settings for my stream. That said my stream looks better than others would at that bitrate because a huge portion of my screen is black lol. On my phone right now but I'll take some screenshots or something later.

EDIT: Here's what I have for my settings in OBS.

I tried both livestream and recording, they were both awful, laggy and low quality with just OBS.

Double post.
Basically...Look at Markipliers livestreams and recordings. I want mine like that. Clean, crisp @60fps with great audio and quality.

You have a better CPU than I do, the same amount of ram, and a somewhat slower GPU that is still not bad. You should honestly be able to stream just fine. I'm sure somewhere some setting is messed up. The only computers that should get laggy when streaming/recording video are like laptops (at least, anything that isn't expensive).
