Yesterday I formatted my computer and installed a fresh copy of XP, and I've encountered a weird issue involving file names being shortened. Check out the attachment... Notice how some of the folder names are shortened and an ellipses is appended to it? This is just my music folder, but it does this for everything. I should also note that I don't use Windows Explorer, I use something else called Xplorer2 Pro, but it happens in both file browsers.

Anybody know why this is happening and how to fix it? It's really annoying and totally pointless.

To disable the 8.3 name creation on all NTFS partitions, type fsutil.exe behavior set disable8dot3 1 at a command prompt, and then press ENTER."

That isn't a 8dot3 name. An 8.3 name shortens things to something like "Aphex ~1" and stuff for directories (and ~1.ext for files with extensions). Plus, it's only happening to some of the names (look at that "Bone Thugs-N-Harmony" folder).

I did a couple quick google searches, but came up with nothing because it's kinda hard to search for crap like this. Hopefully spec will be able to figure this out, because I'm stumped.

Yeah it seems to be totally random. I tried the thing Sneaky posted but it didn't work. It's really annoying, because it will shorten files or folders even with two or three characters. The AVG folder in my Program Files is down to "A..."

I'd do a scan to see if there's any malware or shit on there. Maybe post a HijackThis log and let us dissect it.

Well... I doubt that's the case because this is a fresh install of Windows after a format, and it was doing this from the beginning :|

Some WindowBlinds themes cause this...I think it's related to the font that's being used.
