The way I see it, chartmakers today (a in, after a0 imploded and people like Glove started making files) are way too obsessed with making things hard, and needlessly adding in tripples and quads because "zomg, it fits with the music". Sure, I love accurate charts, but when you have sections that are pretty much just a bunch of triples with a double thrown in once in a while, that's just not really fun any more, it's more like total abuse. It's taken the elitism that arch had about stepfiles that much further, by deciding anything that doesn't contain at least 10 annoyingly placed triples isn't a decent stepfile any more.

Indeed.

ITG kind of did the same thing to the pad simfile world as well.  It got to the point where I didn't want to play my own simfiles because they were too damn hard (and I didn't try half as hard for difficulty as some of the people out there).

I kind of went back to writing DDR-style charts as of late.  They're just more fun to play.  Even the I Love (Orange Things) chart that I did for Mungyodance 3 (due out extremely soon!  woo!) is fun (it's a 10-11ish) because I didn't go out of my way to follow every-fucking-thing.

Yeah, whenever I make ITG charts I try not to go above mid-range 12, though most of my charts end up as 11's.

Also, V^2ex = pure, undiluted bullshit.

So does this make Chik Habit, RAN and Battlewalk not fun, or make me elitist?

Depends on what the individual's view on "fun."

I think Bobbias is referring more to the obsession with following everything and making charts hard.  I imagine that there are some people out there who will bitch and moan about files if they have a tiny inaccuracy (in which case they'd probably have a field day with Guitar Hero III!).

I love songs like Chick Habit, I love IDM files, because they give you a chance to make a hard file that doesn't require you to layer 3 million sounds to make a file that has boatloads of triples. IDM has so much rhythm and variation in the rhythm that it tends to make fun, but difficult songs. However, when you get someone taking a metal song and making pretty much every kick into a jump, and then adding extra notes to follow the lead guitar, resulting in hold+jumps and triples all over the place, it's getting a little extreme.

I still love playing stuff like Air, and such.

I stopped making sims because of all this shit.. I agree that a person's definition of 'fun' is if they can do it and get SDG/P on it. If they can't AA it, it's a piece of shit. Personally, I used to make files that I could beat myself. Then I saw that a lot of people were better at SM than me, so I made a bit more difficult files. I found that it was hard to make files that I couldn't do myself, because I had to idea how the steps would feel to someone a bit more fluent than I.

So when a0 went down and s.net went up, I just stopped making them because I felt that his forums were more about SM/filemaking and s.net is more about keeping our little community of DDR/gamers alive, and more intelligent topics. Not to be a negative nancy but it was also hard to keep up with the popularity of certain sim makers, mine and others would get overlooked.

i remember people masturbating over everything that toph made.  while most of his stuff was good, they weren't the best sims ever made.

I remember trying to revive myself as an author on ODI a couple of months ago, but no one even bothered with Lawn Wake II because it was by the flashbulb and I was called a "Stepmania fossil." So I decided, "Fuck them, fuck releases, fuck the Stepmania community."

Sounds fun, i just need to purchase a shitty old usb/ps2 keyboard because the wireless one won't cut it for SM at all.  I'll start browsing muzie if you're all up to it.

I should see if I can force myself to actually complete a simfile, lol.

What do you mean by songs that we haven't stepped before?

I think he means something you haven't released yet.

Someone should make a topic for the pack. I don't mind, if no one else wants too.

Well, haven't released, or entirely new steps exclusive for the pack. (well, unreleased stuff would  still be exclusive I guess)
