Title: Audio file [mp3] skipping
Post by: Sneaky on October 15, 2008, 01:10:25 AM
So I've had this issue for a while now, and I don't know what to do about it anymore to fully remedy the problem.

Whenever I play any mp3, either on my internal HD, or external [via USB], at random points in the mp3 file, it skips/hiccups/whatever, but continues playback.

What I've done:
Cleaned up PC using "powersuite'
Read up here (http://webhome.idirect.com/~nuzhathl/mp3-faq.html#ques4)
Reinstalled sound drivers
Replaced OMEGA Radeon drivers w/ original Radeon drivers. [thought this would be the good fix]

Halp.
I'm a real stickler for sound quality/performance, so unless I just listen to the files on my zune and only that, I can't do it on the PC, it's just too frequent and annoying.

What else could this be.. They were running all so perfectly before. The only thing I've changed is using the Omega drivers, and software here and there, but none that would affect the playback of my mp3 files in ANY program that does so [billy, foobar, winamp, WMP, etc]

Few questions 4 u:

1) What sound card do you have (in non-Vista operating systems, go into the mixer and give the name at the bottom of the window; in Vista, mouse over the volume control icon and the name of the device will appear there)?
2) What OS are you running?
3) Did it start doing this since you had Windows installed or did it start afterwards?
4) Do you have stairs in your house?

Realtek AC97 Audio [on-board, never upgraded]
XP pro version 2002 sp2
it started long after i had installed this copy of xp [which i PERFECTLY AND LEGITIMATELY ACQUIRED]
i do not, it's a one story, and longer than it is wide.

other stuffs:
it's an emachines t1840, of which the only original thing I use is the mobo. I swapped out processors, hard drives, ram, video, wireless card, dvd burner, etc.

Intel celeron 2.4GHz, 1 GB of ram with 40GB[OEM, with OEM windows XP], 60GB[installed after, OH HEY WHATS UP copy of XP] and 150GB [external] hard drives.

edit2: Yes that does mean i dual boot to 2 different hard drives with 2 different copies of XP. Why? Because I was too lazy to retrieve all my pics, personal files and stuff from my C: drive, so I just installed another HD and slapped XP on it.  I would say that's the problem, except I don't remember it happening RIGHT after I set all of this up.

note: it does it in videos as well.

The same type of thing happened to my laptop shortly before the hard drive failed, but if it's also happening to stuff on external flash storage, I don't think that's it.

This (http://www.retrevo.com/s/Buffalo-HD-HB160U2-review-manual/id/419ag705/t/1-2/) is the external. I've had it for a few years and I love it. It's mostly for PERFECTLY LEGITIMATE video/movies, and all of my music collection.

You know, you could have easily replaced the OEM XP with your version without losing all that crap...

Why does NOBODY know about that feature?

That's the thing, I didn't want to replace it, I just wanted a blank file storage thing. Unless that's an option

Did you ever install ffdshow on your system?  If it's handling your audio and too many of its enhancement features are enabled you can get stuttering like that.

Also, try updating your motherboard drivers.  That helps in some cases.

Well replacing it would have saved space overall, instead of having a dual boot setup, you'd only have 1 install of windows. And you could have used that 80GB drive for pure storage.

I just formatted my OEM C: drive, fresh copy of OEM XP. Downloaded Billy, pick an mp3, bam, a few seconds in, stutter and skip. D:

edit:
after typing above text, I went ahead and re-reformatted the drive because I accidentally uninstalled the onboard sound. plus I thought it would help

currently I just started installing SP2 [I didn't do that on the first format], after which I will start searching for a BIOS update, to see if that will have any affect on it.

edit2: done installing SP2, restarted, found a BIOS update (http://www.bios-drivers.com/drivers/204/204661.htm), done installing, now restarting.. I heard a stutter while the start up music was being played, so that leads me to believe the problem still isn't solved. fuck me in the ass

edit3: going to try upgrading directx

Have you tried updating your motherboard drivers yet?  I'm not referring to a BIOS update; it's usually referred to as a chipset INF update or something of the like.

I just found some INF update on intel's website - trying that now.

Well that didn't work.. Blah. It was the correct update for my chipset and everything. This is gay D:

Hmm...try uninstalling your official sound card drivers and using the ones that are either built into Windows or that come up in Windows Update.

FUCK ME IN THE GROIN.

I just spent the last 3 hours or so fucking around with my hard drive setup. [internal IDE drives]

Used to be:
stock 40GB Imperial w/ xp home
After 60GB Western Digital  w/ xp pro

I wanted to change it to:
After 60GB Western Digital w/ xp pro
After [formatted, blank] 40GB W.D.

The problem was, the 60GB was missing the boot and NTLDR files, so I came across this (http://www.tinyempire.com/notes/ntldrismissing.htm) helpful page that remedied that issue. Now I can boot from this drive without fail, ridding my computer of it's stock HD, which I thought may have been interfering with my sound fuckups.

Apparently, it had nothing to do with it. 10 seconds into Rock n roll train, it skips. I fucking hate my fucking life.

This is a screen of my installed sound devices from the Device Manager.

Spec, how would I go about uninstalling [what you said.]. I'm aware that there are the drivers I need to hear shit from my speakers, which is what I thought came with XP with my computer. The "Realtek AC97" drivers are what I'm speaking of.

edit: I found a windows RAM testing program that you make a boot disk from a floppy. Testing now to see if ram has any issues.

So wait, are you using the drivers that came with XP?  If you're doing that, try going to your system or motherboard manufacturer's page and downloading the sound card drivers that they provide.

If not, the Realtek drivers can generally be removed in Add/Remove Programs.

edit: I found a windows RAM testing program that you make a boot disk from a floppy. Testing now to see if ram has any issues.

Bad RAM won't cause this to happen.  If you have bad RAM in your system it'll cause much more serious issues and will be far more sporadic.

I'm using the realtek drivers. I'll try uninstalling them, but afterwards, will my computer still play sounds? Or how would I go about obtaining some kind of windows default, unless they are already there.

edit: Removed the realtek drivers, also went thru the add/remove list and uninstalled some media  related stuff I don't use. Rebooted, then it gave me the new hardware wizard, so I placed my drivers CD for XP in the drive, and clicked automatically install. It installed fresh, new untainted Advance AC97 drivers. [same as realtek i believe.] So, in hopes of that actually doing something, I started up a song, and it immediately skips at the beginning, and also about a minute in. I think the drivers aren't the problem. this is getting to be ridiculous.

At this point, you should sacrifice a goat to the dark gods. It might not work, but at least you can say you sacrificed a goat.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I'm thinking at this point. :P

This is kind of an odd problem...almost seems like a buffering issue but considering it's happening in all players that seems sort of doubtful.

Here's one thing you can try: when you play the sound file, check task manager to see how much of your CPU the player is using.  If it (or something else) is using 100% there's a good chance that there's some sort of audio filter that's making your CPU go all die and stuff.

As for CPU usage, I closed all unneeded programs, and it was steady 2 to 8%. Then I started the Mp3, played it in Billy, still a good 2 to 8%. Then I waited for the file to skip, and the CPU usage jumped up to 46% then back down to 2.

Ok, can you give us a list of what filters it goes through (stuff like equalizers, etc.) Are you running it through FFDshow?
Title: Re: Audio file [mp3] skipping
Post by: Sneaky on October 26, 2008, 07:20:13 PM
I've not heard of FFDshow before this thread. Billy doesn't have an equalizer, but there is a program called Sound Effect thats in the taskbar. It installs with the AC97 drivers [stock, even], and is the AC97 Audio Configuration, in which it has effects/equalizers. None of those options are even on as of now. Basically to config the driver I suppose.  Other than that, I've never installed [knowingly] any software to alter the sound of my music.

I've used WMP, Billy, and winamp as audio players.  I also have Zune, iTunes, Soulseek, VLC, and Quicktime, of which I use for my zune and ipod, Anime/movies, and quicktime video stuff.

Does that spike happen with the other players as well?

Also, does it happen on all file formats (i.e. OGGs, FLACs, WAVs, CD audio, etc) or just with MP3 files?

Yep all players.. I tried a .flac [converted from mp3], still did it.

Lame. This is a hell of a problem.

Only thing I can suggest is figuring out how to change the buffer size in one of those programs and see if that makes any difference.

And if that doesn't work, reinstall your OS.

My solution: set my laptop on my desk in a nice area, and hook up my 2nd monitor to it as a display, keeping my laptop closed. Use wireless USB dongle back and forth between desktop/lappy to control which one i use. Copy all music over to laptop. Hook up desk speakers to the laptop

no more skipping :p fuck it

Ok so I'd like to update this. One day, the stuttering stopped after i did something, i don't know what it was, all i know is that it stopped. So recently, as seen in the sasser thread, i've reformatted.  The stuttering began. Look at my list of codecs, none of which were listed as 'broken' via Sherlock codec detective, and see if there is anything that would cause a conflict and the stutter. This sucks balls.
