Post by: Alice on November 11, 2008, 09:14:12 PM
No, rly, we should.  Would something like Hamachi (http://www.hamachi.cc) let us play a LAN game together, eliminating our need to create a permanent s.net server?

I couldn't be assed to find the last thread. :(

I'd be game, despite hardly playing UT.

This would be "freeware" right?

Yea, if there was a way those of us who don't have the game to PERFECTLY LEGITIMATELY acquire said game, to play, then I'm game.

You'd still need to set up a server regardless, Hamachi would just be overkill.

If'n you want to set up a date/time I can set up a server.  I'm pretty good at that kind of stuff, plus I have a dynamic hostname so it'd be really easy for you guys to join it.  I would like to play games and stuff (host "site events," if you will) with you guys more often.

Yep. :)

D2 would be quite fun, I think.  One thing that we should probably get started is a Ventrilo or TeamSpeak server.  I could run the game server, but if someone gets some sort of voice thing set up that would be awesome (or, alternatively, we could try to leverage some other free service).

Yeah, I'd be in for this sort of thing. That is, If I could connect to the server... Sometimes my internet likes to be a total piece of shit, since my router conveniently forgets that I ever told it to forward any ports.

UT99, I will have to obtain a PERFECTLY LEGITIMATE copy somehow.

I'm pretty sure you can do direct IP games over the Internet with D2.  I'll have to give it a try one of these days just to test it out.

So, how many of us can get in a game of Diablo 2 together?

Also, me being from Florida on a shitty wifi connection and Bobbies being from snow land means it's going to be really hard to get a good game of UT99 going. I'd still be game to try, but damn.

8 players in D2.

And our distance won't necessarily cripple the latency between us, however, the shitty wifi connection and the fact that my internet has been lagging in games recently, as well as the fact that my internet connection likes to unexpectedly drop out could pose a problem.

How about TFC?

There definitely wouldn't be enough players for a good game of TFC.  Team Fortress has always been one of those types of games that are incredibly boring if you don't have at least 4-6 players on a team and is one of the few games where having more players is definitely better.

Counter-Strike or CS:Source is a definite possibility.  That game is far more fun to play with friends than with your average pub moron.

Oh yeah, if we do UT99, we definitely have to do a game of CTF-Face with a team of us against a team of bots.  My friends and I have a lot of fun with that for some reason.

8 players in D2.

Hell, that should do it. Well, I suppose any day between Thursday and Sunday should work for.

Or maybe we should wait for thanksgiving vacation, so people actually have the time off.

Good point, also can we start with UT99 and D2 before we branch off to every other good multiplayer PC game?

Erm...yeah, good point. :P  It would be best if we decided on just one to start with.

So uh, anyone have an idea what kind of service we can use for voice chat?  If nothing else it'll give me a good reason to bust out my mic (if I can even find it, heh).

Well, there's this: http://www.freeventriloserver.com/

They let you reserve a vent server for up to 8 hours for free.

Also, their FAQ makes me laugh. A lot: http://www.freeventriloserver.com/faq.phtml

Of course, we could always find some way to get a PERFECTLY LEGITIMATE vent server set up either on one of our computers, if that will work, or spec can try to get it on one of his servers...

Also, I need to start LEGITIMATELY OBTAINING these games...

No, I'm already going to be using bandwidth for the game itself.  I only have 512kbps of upstream bandwidth to spare, and I'd rather have as much of that going to the game as I can.

I'm thinking Skype will probably be the best way to go.  I'd much rather use something that's going to be always available.  I just checked the FreeVentriloServer.com page and there wasn't a single server available.  Considering the demand for those things I can't see there being much of an opportunity to reserve one.

Bah, mics are pretty cheap now, just get a cheap crappy mic, or a headset, if you want to spend the money. gaming with mics is infinitely more fun than without.

Also, I still need to get a PERFECTLY LEGITIMATE copy of D2. But I rarely have torrents running often, because I'm either at school, where it's completely blocked (I need to set up an SSH tunnel.... :/) or I'm playing an online game and I want to avoid lag.

We won't be playing on B-net anyway, so that wouldn't factor into things.

O do own the D2 CDs, however, they are too scratched to work, and god only knows where my case even is at this point, so I have to resort to other means.

If we're using Vent, you have 2 volume controls. How loud you are, and how loud the other people are.

So you may be able to boost the volume there. If not, check in the windows volume stuff. There should be an option somewhere to boost the mic volume by 20 dB.

Pfft, that's okay.  When I moved to Maryland the first time I misplaced my D2 LOD disc.  I had the sleeve but not the disc itself.  Having a key and no disc is kind of a bummer.  Thank goodness for ThePERFECTLYLEGITIMATEPLACEFORGETTINGSTUFFBay.org.

True to form, I found my pressed CD the day after I installed it, but kept the ISO around so I didn't have to find a crack.  Not like that's an issue now that the latest patch is out, of course.

If we're using Vent, you have 2 volume controls. How loud you are, and how loud the other people are.

Do you know if Vent lets you use alternate output and input devices?  I have a headset that has both a mono speaker and a mic and would like to try to use that for chatting, since it bugs me when people's voices get mixed in with the normal game sounds.

If not I'll just use my laptop as a designated communications device. ;)

Instructions for Diablo2:

1. Open D2
2. Create character
3. Walk outside of town.
4. Kill shit.
5. Loot items.
6. Level up.
7. Distribute stats/skills.
8. Repeat steps 4 through 7.

(To walk, you left click somewhere, to keep walking towards the cursor, just hold down the left click. To kill shit, just left click and hold it down until the monster is dead, or use skills with right click.)

We'll see.

MapVote is a definite.  I'll have to look into the other ones.  I don't really know about the grappling hook, that could potentially prove to be worse than the translocator.

fuck I don't remember AS-Bridge, is that the one where you have to go around and open shit up and then go in and blow up a crystal or some shit

No.

It's an excellent third-party assault map that requires you to blow up a bridge.  The thing is massive, the bots are great at it, and it's seriously one of the best assault maps I've played.

Get it here: http://www.fileplanet.com/38231/30000/fileinfo/AS-Bridge (http://www.fileplanet.com/38231/30000/fileinfo/AS-Bridge).  Sorry for the FilePlanet link.  Nali City's been down since forever. D:

sounds like an MMORPG Jr. :(

Except it has a real plot, and probably the best item system I've seen in any game ever (compared to most MMORPGs who are basically "you hit level x, now you can wear armor set y. Maybe if you get really lucky you'll drop a piece of armor or a weapon that has some sort of stupid useless magical effect, like +2 damage on something that does 250 damage !")

Not to mention the game is based around killing horeds of relatively easy to kill monsters, as opposed to most MMORPGs which are based around monsters being tough enough to require being taken on one at a time, and such.

D2 has a totally different feel from MMORPGs today. Plus, you can go through the plot in 3 different difficulties, and play on Hardcore mode, where if you die, you are permanently dead, but get bonus items/exp for doing so.

MMORPG Jr. was just a joke.  I've played Diablo before and loved it.  I expect D2 to be a pimped up version of it (with moar chix to play as?).

Spec: an incorrectly configured grappling hook can unfortunately be a huge game breaker in some levels, especially DOM, CTF, and AS levels.  It's probably best to set up Mapvote LA to only use that mod during certain DM or TDM matches.  Did you want the Telefrag gun mod, too, dat shit is CRAZY.  And when did Nali City go down, that sux >:(

MMOs generally have some sort of plot, they're just presented differently.  You aren't forced along a certain path.

Can't I download this threw the server, or will it kick me?

Yeah, you should be able to download it through the server.  It will probably take longer than grabbing it through FileFucker, though.  Your call.

Keep in mind that it is an objective-based Assault map.  Getting a feel for the objectives prior to the event would be a good idea.

FileFront kicks FilePlanet's ass, mainly because it doesn't have any download queues and pointless forced registrations. <_<  Also, every time I download from FileFront I max out my connection speed (3mbps), so speed certainly isn't an issue for me with that site.

I have a registration from back when I actually used my hotmail address for something. And most browsers are smart enough to save my password, and for that site, I also happen to have a cookie to auto-login.

And I've never figured out how to get FileFront working in GetRight (My download manager of choice for HTTP downloads). The "download" link just feeds it a webpage (and a damn small one at that).

Works great with DownThemAll (http://www.downthemall.net/).

And yeah, I have an old login with a really old Hotmail account (that hasn't worked for about eight years now, heh) that still works, but having to log on to download files from a free server is still dumb.  Why do so many sites (forums and things like that aside) seem to feel as though they need to enforce logins?  Most of the sites that do it simply don't need to.

True. The original use for forced logins was to regulate leechers and to try to get them more involved, but since the advent of bots that can make theor own accounts and log in, that has become useless and counterproductive.

Another mutator request:  BCC200.  Lets you actually make the bots do what you want them to :U

and Double Enforcers.  Starting with one Enforcer is for squares, this mod actually makes the enforcer a competent weapon from the very start.

I don't have much of a problem killing people with a single Enforcer...

It does a decent amount of damage and is one of only three instant-hit weapons in the game.  I've played with the Double Enforcer mod and all it winds up doing half of the time is devaluing the minigun due to the akimbo Enforcer's accuracy.

Good point. Also, this can kinda go in the Vista tips thread too, but anyone who has trouble using the mouse scroll wheel in Diablo 2, I found a fix:

You set the shortcut to run in compatibility mode for Windows 98. I also had to go to the settings in game and set my scroll wheel up and down to scroll through my hotkeyed skills, since it wasn't set right.

So I've got D2/LoD installed and patched [i think], and ut99 is installed and ready to go. Now I play the waiting game *shifts eyes*

The easiest way to check if your D2 is patched: start it up, and in the main menu, there's a little version number on the left side most of the way down the screen. A fully patched D2 is version 1.12.

I still need to install ut99 :/

Also, just installed ut99, so aside from getting any other maps we may want to play in advance (so I can test them out, and learn the level a bit, and get some practice fragging the fuck out of bots) there's not much left. I also have vent now.

So my UT99 is stuck at 99.8% done, and I'm not sure how to update my D2. Halp.

If you're only missing a couple complete files in your UT99, I could hook you up with them?

also all I'm missing is headset now

so we're

Spectere - Ready?
Bobbias - Ready?
MortifiedocAlot - incomplete UT99
Sneaky - Ready!
Rowan - Optional Headset (suggestions for brand/type?) but Ready!
Omega - ??!??1?!?1!?!/

Well thanks to Rowan, I am now fully and ready for D2. Now we just have to wait for the gods to grant me the rest of UT 99.

Have you tried looking for an identical torrent of it someplace else? Some torrents get uploaded to a number of independent trackers, but are all identical. If that's the case, you can actually add that torrent, and uTorrent at least, will know it's identical and ask to add the trackers listed in that torrent file. Of course, you could always make sure you get a reliable torrent by using TPB, or isohunt and making sure it says the torrent has seeders.

Can't say that I have, but I'll try it. Also when I went looking for files last time it seemed like this was the only half decent one.

Also my mic should be working now, apparently the windows default setting for it was REALLY low.

Tribes 2 is still alive? Jesus bloody asscorn I still have my original box/CD and shit, the updater [or update download from filefuck] never worked!  Guess I should have looked harder.. This was my first online shooter, and I played it for as long as our clan lasted which was probably a solid 2 years. Man it's been a while, I'd love to play that with people on here.

Oh this is also where the name Sneaky generated from too! :D  My original name [for some reason] was sneaky_gunluvr, so people started calling me sneaky and I just changed it to that instead.

fuck yes fuck yes play this now

Well my download of it finished (I still want a decent UT 99 link, if anyone has one) so I'm game. Also why don't we do Diablo 2 sometime, since we know everyone has it and has it patched.

Indeed.

I have a good headset solution (even if the mic apparently makes my voice sound a bit off ;)).  It looks like Skype will work for our chatting needs, too.  It apparently supports up to 10 people in a single conference call.

Now all we need is a date and time.  Preferably weekends, preferably at night.  I can do the game hosting and shizz.

Oh, one more thing: b.net or no?

I'll see if I can get the torrent I had, because I know that one worked, if not, I'll just try to find another and send you a PM.

No b.net because I can't. I don't have my CD key.

And I'll have to either steal my brother's mic, or use the built in on my computer, which is not a very good mic... Let's hope for your sake I can get my brother's mic.

I'd be up for some starcraft anytime. But as for D2, I gave the game to my friend, I got tired of it :(

I don't have SC on this computer... and I never played any of the Tribes games, and by the look of that, I'd be at a HUGE disadvantage if I played any of you guys who have. The Tribes games seem to be very noob-unfriendly from what I've learned.

I could install SC (but I suck at it, I believe NewF can attest to this) on my other computer, but yeah, no Tribes

I'm not exactly good either, lol. About the only tactic I ever managed to get down half decent was the Zealot Rush, lol.

Okay then.  I'll put up a game on b.net. ;)

Not me.  I suck at RTS's. :x

Everyone bit him sucks at SC now, lol. When I originally played SC, after it came out, I only ever really played custom maps. Mostly Evolution, Smash TV and Survival type maps, though I played other ones like that, but I was never any good at normal matches. Same goes with WC3.

Same. Well, I'm good against bots, but I've never played against humans. Plus I've never played SC (I KNOW, IT'S A SIN).

Yeah, I'm pretty good against bots, too.  It's pretty easy to develop a winning strategy against them, though.  In most games all you have to do is send in a few large groups and you'll eventually win. :p

When it comes to humans, I blow.  I'm not really interested in RTS games enough to get into all of their intricacies.  I am very good when it comes to games that allow you to play cooperatively (i.e. two humans to an empire) because I'm good at city building/defending and resource management/gathering.
