Random Chat / Geocaching
« on: January 12, 2009, 09:12:33 PM »
So I started geocaching within the past few days. I remember distinctly a thread on a0 about it, which is where I first learned about it, and forgot about it, until my mom brought up the fact that her sister got her grandkids GPSes for geocaching, and my mom told me it sounded cool and we should try it. i was like damn, mom, when did you get so cool.

i made my first find yesterday. it was really easy but still satisfying. tried to locate another cache today but failed miserably. i knew the general location but i looked EVERYWHERE for the thing and after a half hour it started getting dark and i gave up. i'll try again tomorrow on the way to another cache and volunteering at the library.

for the uninformed:

www.geocaching.com

basically it's a global treasure hunt. you get ridiculously precise coordinates and you go around trying to find things other people have hidden, and vice versa.

« on: December 25, 2008, 02:02:04 AM »
hay guyz. merry christmas to everyone, even though it's barely christmas yet.

post fun things you gave to people or have recieved. the usual christmas chatter.

i bought my friends really cheap but awesome gifts: a book of poems about teenage angst by some 15 year-old, a spaghetti-o's thermos-bowl (filled with skittles), a pokemon keychain and Princess Guinevere Magical Fairyland DVD, a Rolodex, some BBs, and Evergreen room spray from Bath N' Body Works. Each for different friends. :D

Random Chat / So my friend's an idiot.
« on: October 07, 2008, 03:41:31 PM »
Today during school my girlfriend texted me saying she was listening to a local radio station on the way to school, and an idiot called in. They were apparently talking politics on the show and had been jesting and poking fun at Republicans.

My friend, Erik, who is staunchly Republican, became offended, and called in to the show to complain. He had been skipping the first half of the day because of a Calc test he was avoiding, and had been listening in at home when he grew infuriated with the radio talk host people.

The call went something like this:

Him: "Yeah, I'm sick of you guys dissing republicans so much. I just want to let you guys know that you're disenfranchising A LOT of viewers right now. Your comments are terrible and bigoted and you guys will pay."

Them: "Wait, what? Who exactly is this "group of disenfranchised people" you're talking about?"

Him: "Well, me, my mom, my dad, my sisters, and my band."

Them: "Whoa dude, you have a band?! What are you guys called?"

Him: "Uh, well, the East Lake band. (East Lake High School being our school)"

Them: "The East Lake band? What?"

Him: "Well, the marching band. I mean, my "circle of friends" aren't going to listen to you anymore."

Then he hung up on them.

What the hell.

My girlfriend went on to tell me (She heard every second of this live, coincidentally- she was running late for class this morning and wouldn't have heard it otherwise) that a metric assload of people called in afterwards to respond to Erik's call. All of them were making fun of Erik's.

"Yeah, my mom and dad and band are gonna stop listening to you guys now! Fight the power!"

And, best of call, someone from a quasi-local high school, Largo, called in. "Just wanted to say that guy's call didn't really matter: we're gonna kick your ass this weekend! Go Largo Band of Gold!"

So he basically made an idiot out of himself AND gave our band a stupid name. Way to go Erik. And he's our DRUM MAJOR (captain-type guy) too. >_<

« on: August 23, 2008, 03:57:53 PM »
Seeing as how I just got a new one, I'm going to start looking for new games to play.

Already I have:

Powerstones 1 and 2
Crazy Taxi
Dynamite Cop (I think I have that one, somewhere...)
Sonic Adventure 2 (I'm pretty sure my friend has Sonic Adventure 1)
Soul Calibur (I think my friend has that one as well)

What else?

Random Chat / Has anyone read Catcher in the Rye because
« on: July 26, 2008, 02:00:02 AM »
christ it was a good one. It made me think, more than books usually do without having to have them explained to me. You know what I mean?

And now that I'm done reading, there are things I compare in real life to things in the book, people, places. What the hell. Someone else talk to me.

Random Chat / This thread is extraordinarily fruity
« on: May 31, 2008, 12:31:43 AM »
branched off from our epic fruit discussion in the NETJ thread.

I'll begin by stating how creepy blood oranges look and sound. What the hell.

Also, I can't stand watermelons. My friend eats them with salt... isn't that weird? Who does that... yech. I tried it and it made me want to retch.

Dude, you think you know blueberry picking? Me, my mom and my girlfriend all went blueberry picking like a week ago. We got like 15 pounds of blueberries. What the hell. So delicious!

Random Chat / I made $800 (really $950)
« on: May 27, 2008, 10:09:11 PM »
in two months just by selling candy at my school.

I finally deposited my candy sale earnings into my savings account today.

Here are the final numbers:

Started with $10 worth of skittles.
Doubled that, doubled that, doubled that... until I got to about $300. Used the $300 in candy sales and a hundred my dad gave me for my report card to invest in:

$412 worth of candy, which bought me 954 pieces of candy.

I have roughly 40 pieces left, out of that original 954 I had a month ago, which will all finish selling tomorrow.

This leaves me with... $954, minus $150 for various expenses, is a total of $800 PURE PROFIT off of selling candy bought at Sam's Club out of a Fundraising box.

Damn, I feel good about this. You other highschoolers... I offer this word of advice: If you fundraise, and use a box that says "fundraiser", KEEP THE BOX. BUY CHEAP CANDY. RESELL TO YOUR PEERS AND MAKE A KILLING. it works.

I sold Snickers, Milky Way, Three Musketeers, Peanut MMs, MMs, Dark Chocolate Peanut MMs, Peanut Butter MMs, Reese's Pieces, Reese's, Kit Kats, Sour Punch Straws, Tropical/Wild Berry/Sour/Regular Skittles, Tropical/baja California/regular Starburst, and I think that's it.

That article was posted in my newspaper, haha. It makes much mention of Anonymous and "We Are Legion". The raid is coming to my county. Should be pretty interesting... wonder if I'm gonna go drive down there just for the lulz. It's gonna take place like 20 minutes away.

Gaming / My Wii is dying. Halp :(
« on: February 05, 2008, 06:01:41 PM »
So lately I've been having this sick, twisted problem with my Wii: when I'm playing a game, the disc-reading device inside the Wii has been making an awfully loud whirring noise. It's been really annoying me, so finally I put a towel over my Wii to muffle it. I could still hear it though, so today I wrapped my Wii in a towel and put two more on top of it, to completely muffle it. All was well and good, and I couldn't hear the evil whirring, but while I was playing No More Heroes the Wii suddenly died. I went to check on it and it had completely shut off, it wasn't running WiiConnect24 or whatever. It had totally overheated, and it was REALLY hot to the touch. I'm wondering now if my Wii is totally fried, and if I can send it in to the big N to get them to fix it (even if it might have been my fault :x)

Random Chat / Financial Assistance
« on: January 12, 2008, 12:07:22 AM »
So I have a financial question, how much of each paycheck should I save (deposit into my ridiculously low-interest savings account)? I seem to be getting a universal "save at least a little of your money from each paycheck, you'll thank yourself later" message, but I'm not sure exactly how much. I'm thinking like $20 from each paycheck maybe? Do you guys have savings accounts with a bunch of money in them? Or do you spend all your money as soon as you get it?

Most of the money I get, especially the money I saved from lunch for the past few years, I spent almost entirely on coins. I prefer doing that because coins are tangible goods that appreciate far faster than the .6%/yr my savings account gets me, and I actually get enjoyment out of purchasing and viewing the coins that I buy. I consider my coin collection to be an investment. But that leaves the question, should I leave a small portion of my income liquid just in case I need to use it at the crack of a whip? I just can't stand the thought of money just chillin' in a savings account.

Opinions, anecdotes, helpful information welcome.
