Random Chat / So, that d20 thing we were going to try.

Alright, well, I've got the necessary rulebooks, and have been formulating a campaign. I think I've got the storyline down.

Now, if I'm going to continue on and actually like, learn the rules and get openrpg and make maps and things, I need to be sure that I'm going to have people who want to play.

The game plays just like D&D, it's the same system, just in a different setting, with slightly different rules for weaponry and stuff, as we'll be shootin' the guns for the most part. Stats and character creation are the same, if not a little simpler. Feats and skills are the only real differences, although there's a large amount of overlap. Basically, if you've played D&D, you're fine.

I'll get to work on having everything modified to my liking and ready to go if I can get three or four people. I should be ready by this weekend.

Also, questions, you can ask them. I can try to answer them. :U

Here's the information you need for making your characters. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=9IZ0RY57

You'll be starting out at level 2.

Here's a necessary backstory blurb so you can make your characters.

About the universe:

It's roughly 2234, roughly 150 years after first contact with an alien species. Unluckily for us, they seem quite determined to wipe out humanity, without a second thought. In 2098, They (as humanity refers to them, as they have yet to initiate any communication) staged a massive attack on earth, literally erasing the entire western hemisphere, causing a mass extinction, and killing off nearly half the population of earth. However, the attack was repelled before further damage was inflicted, however the mystery of how such a large fleet slipped into earth orbit completely undetected still manages to baffle scientists. Luckily, humanity pulled itself out of the rubble, and began reconstruction almost immediately, with the cities on Mars and the Moon becoming the main centers of power, forming a unified government. It's only in the last 50 years that earth's surface has been completely reclaimed, although conditions are often harsh outside of cities. Many larger asteroids and the moons of Mars have been colonized as well, along with a handful of extraplanetary systems, although they're all within a fairly small radius.

Faster-than-light travel has been developed, but it's mostly the domain ofthe military and a small  group of private corporations specializing in moving industrial goods in bulk. Regardless of your character's colony of origin or social status, they're all answering the call of the  largest organization in human history, the Terran Military Coalition - Providing a stable source of income and some sense of belonging for the myriads of unemployed young people, or simply those who feel it's their duty to serve their species. Regardless of background, education, or morals, members of the TMC are humanity's first defense against extraterrestrial threats.

Here's some information for clarity on the backstory, just core facts.

- Faster-than-light transportation was discovered around 2070, hooray theoretical physics turning out to work. Colonization both inside and outside of the solar system immediately ensued.
-English is still the primary languages, although asian languages are still spoken. The Earth had a unified government prior to the initial alien attack, and english was the primary language worldwide.
- Cybernetics are very highly controlled, and for the most part illegal. The first instances of such technology surfaced around 2150, although it's not exactly clear when they first were created, or who made them.
- Most combat between humanity and Them take place in space, although ground combat is still quite common, as They are prefectly content to land and level colonies as they see fit.
- Military service is mandatory, but it's more of a national-guard-esque thing, where all able-bodied men are required to do a year of training and serve as defense forces for their respective colonies, essentially as part of their schooling, at the age of 21. All extraplanetary combat, ie offensives, are done by voulenteers. Joining the military isn't just something for people who are suicidal, either, it's a completely legitimate way to earn a living, as you get paid, and in addition all your basic needs are provided for while in the service.
- 97% of people don't own their own space vessels, you'd either have to be in the business of transporting goods or people, be a smuggler or pirate, or be in the military.

I've been itching to try this out for as long as I've known about it. Anyone else up for a game?

/ [Text Game] Pathway to Nothing
« on: September 06, 2007, 04:43:13 PM »
"Alright men, so I bet you're all wondering where the hell we're going by now", the man at the head of the table
barks.

A subdued murmur of agreement goes through the room, but no one actually speaks out. There's about a dozen men in the room, counting the Captain (You assume this is what he is, he's clearly the highest ranking officer here, although you don't personally know him).

"Well, the orders have finally come in. As of this moment, nothing I say leaves this room. Understand?"
"Yes sir!"
"As far as we've been breifed, R&D at the rim colonies have discovered something that they think can be used as a means of instant, undetectable transportation, similar to what They used during the attack on Earth 150 years ago. However, as of last week, all communication attempts to reach the station have failed."

The man pauses to take a drink of coffee. Although you can't tell just from just looking around, it's very early in the morning. After all, it's not like telling time on a spaceship is really productive, there's no good point of reference. Plus the Alcubierre Drive tends to completely screw with your sense of place. You could pretty much be anywhere right now, literally. You still don't know where you're going.

"Sounds like the beginning of every bad sci-fi movie, if you ask me" the man sitting next to you whispers. You nod in agreement, but keep silent.

"Mars Command suspects that They might be involved, but the location of the station is top-secret. Therefore, our squad has been chosen to lead a reconnaisance mission, report on the status of the station, and return. If we find anything out of the ordinary, we're to send communication back to MC, and leave immediately," The captain continues, "the location of the station must remain secret. Apparently, whatever they're doing, it can only be done in one spot, which makes little to no sense if you ask me, but I'm no scientest. Hopefully it'll just be a communications breakdown, and we'll all be able to make it home in one piece. Got it?"
"Yes sir!"
"Okay then, you're dismissed. Suit up, and board the transport ship."

You begin to stand up, but apparently everyone else is quicker than you, so you just wait until everyone's left the room, except you and the Captain.

"Oh, you there."
"Me, sir?"
"Yes, you. You're Kim's replacement, right? Fresh out of Spec Ops training?"
"Yessir. Name's Don Peterson, PFC."
"Alright Private Peterson.Do you have any field experience? What are you trained in?"
"Formally, none, but I did survive the April 3rd incident on the Belt colony"
"Shit son, weren't there only a handful of survivors? And wouldn't you just have been a kid?"
"Yes sir"
"Damn, I guess that explains how you got here straight out of basic. Now what did you train for?"

This thread's gonna be a lot more complicated than the last one. Pick your training specialty, but nothing stupid, like knitting. It'll influence later events.

Gaming / Granado Espada (Or Sword of the New World, but that name sucks)

Okay, so I pretty much whored this in the lame-reply thread, but I'm going to do it again here, because I think I got ignored, and this game is too kickass to just let slip.

Here's the deal, it's an MMO set during the age of exploration, during the early colonization of a new continent. Craziness ensues here, because you can use guns and cannons all sorts of badassery, along with your more traditional magics and swords, etc. Furthermore, it's made by the main designer of RO, so you know it can't completely fail. To complete the weirdness of the game and setting, you don't control one player at a time, you control three. It reminds me a lot of some unholy offspring of Guild Wars-esque combat and micromanaging and the FF12 party system.

Here's the kicker though, K2 (the american distibutor) finally decided to not be an idiot, and just recently made the game free to play.

It weighs in at a pretty hefty 3.6gigs, just for the installer, but it's well mirrored, and I got it downloaded in about two hours. As a note, the graphics kick serious ass, without requiring the greatest computer known to man.

Here's the link

If any of you guys decide to play it, I'm on the Vespanola PK server, family name Ulti-

Seriously, what kind of crap is this, I was all like "hooray comcast is badass, they upped my upload!", but now that this happening, I am greatly annoyed.

The article suggests a couple workarounds, but I haven't looked into them. I'm honestly thinking that I'm going to use Tor now, just as a permanent thing.

Okay guys, hopefully you know the drill. Or at least, if you went to agora, and even noticed the BV forum, you'd know the drill. It's basically a choose-your-own adventure game, in forum format. This particular thread is meant to serve as backstory for a super-badass one I'm plotting, so it'll be rather short. Once it comes to it's conclusion, and trust me, it will, I'll lock it, but keep it in existance for reference. Your actions in this thread basically explain how much backstory you're going to get for the next thread.

*beep beep beep*

You roll over in bed, open your eyes, and glance at your alarm clock. It's 7:00 AM, on a Saturday morning. Apparently you forgot to turn off your alarm.

*beep beep beep*

The curtains are shut, it's dark in your room. You can't really see much. The alarm is still blaring.
