Random Chat / Tumblr, anyone?
« on: September 30, 2010, 06:36:49 PM »
It seems as though many of us here are starting up Tumblr accounts (including me, now :D) I thought maybe it would be useful to gather them all into one place to make it easier to follow each other. Out of all the different blogging websites I've used (which is a decent few) this one seems the most promising so I highly suggest you try it out.

So post with your linkies and I'll list them here!

Computing / I may be a victim of software counterfeiting OH NO!
« on: August 29, 2010, 02:42:03 PM »
I've been using this copy of Windows 7 for several months without a problem until it recently decided it wasn't legit. I know there's the occasional genuineness checker thing that comes with the auto-updates, but I usually look through them before I download and I didn't notice anything like that. I'm guessing that is the source.

I had this problem with XP a while back and there was a little program that fixed it, but I can't seem to find one for 7 that works. If anyone has some solutions besides re-installing Windows, I'm all ears.

Computing / This just doesn't make sense...
« on: August 03, 2010, 06:39:57 PM »
I have decided to create a thread for this because it's becoming quite a hindrance in my computer using routine.

The position of my (wired) keyboard is somehow affecting the signal for my wireless mouse.

My setup is as follows: I sit on my bed with my monitor on a shelf in front of me. My keyboard sits on my lap and my mouse is usually on my bed to the right of me. My computer is on a shelf above my monitor with the mouse's receiver plugged into the front. There is nothing obstructing the path from the receiver and there is only about four feet between the two.

For some reason, the position of my legs or the keyboard being too close to the mouse makes the cursor jumpy and slow. I have actually tested this many times by holding the keyboard close to the mouse while moving the mouse around then moving the keyboard away and the difference is obvious. To be able to use my computer functionally I have to leave about three feet between my keyboard and mouse.

Things I've ruled out:
 - the batteries are fine; I've changed them twice
 - the mouse can work from over 10 feet away (as long as the keyboard isn't next to it of course)
 - the receiver plugged into any USB port yields the same results

I've noticed when I'm using programs that tend to use more memory this problem gets worse, but the fact that the (again, WIRED) keyboard is affecting the mouse just by proximity doesn't register in my brain. Am I missing something about the mechanics of wireless mice or does my mouse just hold some kind of prejudice against wired technology?

Will someone please tell me what the shit is going on because it's driving me insane.

Creation Station / Songs worthy of critique :O !!!!
« on: July 21, 2010, 06:59:17 PM »
Now that I'm beginning to get serious about making music a big part of my life, I'm gonna need some honest critiquing of the songs I create. I'm still learning, and part of learning is knowing what you're doing wrong. Since I know all of you share similar tastes in music as I do, I value your opinion and want to know what you think.

Here is the blog I'll be updating as I progress through my journey as a musician:
I'll be adding songs to it as I create them to get feedback so I can get them just right before I make them available for download.

And these are the places I'll be uploading my music:

New songs so far:
 - Relatively Parallel
 - Chocolate Whips and Kitty Snips
 - Mellowdy
 - Silly Puppy Song
 - Gigglebyte
 - Drum Solo 01
 - A Dark Night in Detlyvos

Media / Doctor Who
« on: April 12, 2010, 05:53:17 PM »
Is anyone else here as intimately attached to this show as I am?

It has quickly and easily taken the place of my favorite show ever. I've seen every episode from the ninth doctor on AT LEAST five times, but I haven't seen much of the previous eight incarnations.

SO for anyone who follows the show, what do you think about Matt Smith (the new Doctor)? Personally, I highly approve. I think the personality they gave this doctor fits him very well.

I hope I'm not alone in enjoying this show cause it's super awesome.

Random Chat / Healthcare Reform?
« on: March 22, 2010, 02:55:16 PM »
Anybody care to explain this new and apparently important bill thinger that is going down?

All I've heard is that healthcare will now be mandatory, and taxes for the wealthy will increase. I suppose I could look it up on some news website but it seems like something worthy of discussing anyway. I'd like to hear everyone's own interpretation of this reform and how it affects you.

Creation Station / Musics.

http://www.last.fm/music/Sqthreer

I created a music page for myself on Last.fm where I will eventually be putting up some good sounding noises. What's up there now are some older experimental "songs" that are maybe a little enjoyable.

I'm starting to get more involved in the auditory aspect of this wacky life and hope to start producing some music that you all will enjoy.

Also why the shit is this the first post here in months? We need to start getting more creative, people >:|

/ Fold or Crumple?
« on: November 14, 2009, 06:29:05 PM »
I feel this is a very important statistic to be on record on these forums so please answer honestly. Any false information provided will result in physically painful consequences.

I fold my toilet paper very neatly to the size of one square, then fold it in half for extra thickness. How many squares I use usually depends on the brand and ply amount of the toilet paper.

I used to crumple until I realized the potential risk of not knowing exactly where your hand is relative to the mess.

One day a termite dug a hole. He burrowed into the whole as if it were his own, which it were.

What he didn't know is that a legion of mice headed directly in his direction.

The battle raged on until finally the elder spoke.

It brought tears to their eyes. No one could hold it back.

A bear came wandering past and smashed them all.

Computing / Software Suggestions
« on: October 30, 2008, 05:55:12 PM »
If you have encountered any interesting or useful tools during your journey through the internet post them here along with brief descriptions, if it's freeware, open-source, portable, Windows/Mac only, etc. so we can all share the joy.

Here are a few things I use that I have found incredibly useful (by the way, everything I list is freeware):

TeraCopy - This is a small program that intercepts copy/move/paste commands in Explorer and does something (I don't know the technical shit) to speed up the process. It uses a nice, tacky-skin free interface with progress bars and a more detailed description of what happens if there's an error, and a bunch of neat stuff.

AppRocket - Some people find this program pointless, but that all depends on how you use your computer. It's great if you like to avoid using the mouse. It's just a highly configurable program launcher that runs in the background and comes up when you press the hotkey (which you can customize) It will search your start menu or any folder you specify, as well as your browser bookmarks and some other stuff so you can just pop it open and have easy access to all your stuff. You can also navigate with it like a tiny file explorer and go back and forth through folders.

Defraggler - A nifty defrag program by the people who created CCleaner that's faster and easier to use.

Notepad++ (open-source) - A kickass Notepad replacement, but sooo much more.

UltraExplorer - This is a rediscovered find for me. It's a file explorer, like Windows Explorer, but way more intuitive and customizable. It has a tabbed and dual-pane interface, a column view option (kinda like what Finder has for Macs) a favorites toolbar and/or pane, customizable keyboard shortcuts, command prompt pane, folder tree pane, quick filter, breadcrumb browsing, folder grouping (which is awesome if you have all your music in one folder so you can separate each letter), image/text/video preview pane and a thumbnail size slider. There's a shitload of other stuff, but these are some things I like. I've been using xplorer2 for a while, but it's not free for the good version, and it doesn't compare to UltraExplorer in many ways. One gripe someone might have is that it kinda uses more memory than usual. But not anything noticable for me, anywho. I've never seen it at more than 25k, and that doesn't really do anything.

I find new stuff all the time so I'll probably be coming here more, later.

Let's see what y'alls got.
