Computing / Laptop likes to lock up.
« on: December 22, 2011, 08:02:18 PM »
So, my laptop has a tendency to freeze up for a while after leaving it for a little while (20 or 30 minutes, sometimes less). It doesn't always do it, but every once in a while it locks up pretty hard, and takes forever to start responding.

The screen will turn back on, but the mouse will be frozen (most of the time), or sometimes move around really jumpy before finally freezing in place somewhere.

I've noticed that the network activity light seems to be locked in the on state or sometimes flashes really slowly (compared to the quicker flashing it does when the computer is running normally).

Is there any way to track what exactly is happening when it locks up like that?

EDIT:
I've got a ton of error messages in the Event Viewer from ACEEventLog that seem to coincide with the time the computer locked up:

(That's only a partial log)
Installing newest drivers right now.

Hmm, still happening. Anyone know where I can send this shit to AMD and bitch them out for their drivers not working right? (And not just be a useless forum...)

Random Chat / Anyone here watch professional Starcraft 2? (yes, it exists)
« on: September 14, 2011, 12:19:32 AM »
Not that this place is very active, but I thought I should put this out there. I've been watching SC2 a lot lately, and I wondered if anyone here did too.

Also, Destiny and Sheth are doing a 24 hour charity drive streaming marathon:

If anyone sees this before 9 AM (not sure what time zone) tomorrow, check it out.

Computing / borked HD? try gentoo: HALP KERNEL PANIC D:
« on: April 26, 2011, 12:34:39 PM »
So, I won't go into details, but I smacked my laptop a bit, and now my hard drive is fucked. And by fucked I mean I caused a head crash, and damaged a portion of the drive platter :/ I'm currently running gentoo off of a flash drive because windows won't boot. I'm thinking of trying to partition off my drive to avoid the broken sectors but to do that I need to be able to reliably find which sectors are bad... Any idea how I can do that from here?

I've already tried transplanting my old hard drive in, but it won't fit, and the drive in here doesn't use the usual power connector (it just has the other connector, with none of the power pins at all).

Anyway, I don't know what tools I should be looking for to try to deal with this, I'm gonna do some googling, but I'm pretty lost here.

Arduino has arrived, now it's time to play with it.

I posted in the happy thread about an Arduino arriving, this is about what I'm gonna be doing with the Arduino.

So far I have created a simple program on the Arduino which takes serial input and outputs the decimal value for each byte that it receives, and a simple console application in C# to communicate with it, proving that I can easily communicate between the Arduino and the computer.

I'm gonna be using the Arduino for a tech project for my college program. A friend of mine and I got our hands on an old-ass robot, and our project is going to involve using the Arduino to be the new brains for the robot. The original "brains" if you can even call them that, were just a bunch of 7400 series logic chips and a couple servo driver chips that took parallel inputs from a computer and translated them into commands to the servo controllers, which then did whatever you wanted the thing to do. All the real brains had to be a on a computer.

I'm trying to basically create a new set of brains for the robot so that it doesn't need to be connected to a computer. Ideally it will be able to store a program on board, which is interpreted by a custom program in the Arduino which sends commands to the steppers. This may or may not be actually feasible without getting a lot more hardware, because I have a feeling that the memory on the Ardunio is too limiting for this, but that's a discussion for later.

The other part of the project is that we want to make it manually controllable via a joystick of some kind. We don't know whether we'll be able to connect a joystick right to the Arduino somehow, or whether we'll be connecting through USB. Ideally we want to be able to connect directly to the Arduino so that we can set it to playback or manual control modes without even being connected to a computer. However, that may not be possible with the time and money we have available.

I'll be posting here with updates periodically on the progress of the project, and I'll probably be using my tumblr for progress updates as well.

Computing / Winamp is apparently fucked.
« on: December 08, 2010, 12:15:51 AM »
I just posted a thread on the winamp forums. I did some digging, but came up with nothing, and I'm really confused as to what's going on here. I REALLY hope I don't have a virus or something :/ Both the important DLLs are trusted, according to process hacker.

I know I have enough programs that I could use for music (Media player classic, WMP, Foobar2000, VLC, GomPlayer, and Zoomplayer) but I prefer winamp over all those when it comes to music, especially streams, like di.fm...

Computing / My brother wants to upgrade his comp
« on: November 18, 2010, 02:07:25 PM »
So, my brother's looking at upgrading the computer he's been using for the past couple years (which is technically still mine, because I bought and put together everything inside it...). Anyway, I've been out of the hardware loop for a long time, and I really have no idea what he should be getting, he's looking at upgrading the mobo and CPU and leaving the rest of the computer. As far as price range, less than $100 for each (so less than $200 combined). Basically, he wants to be able to play Starcraft 2.

Gaming / Fucked up video games.
« on: November 14, 2010, 10:26:39 PM »
I think a thread is in order.

I stumbled upon a video of someone playing a really fucked up game, I'd never heard of before.

LSD, for the PS1.

The game is HIGHLY random, the music is based on randomly modifying a single song pattern and playing it back in various different ways, and the game is based on dream journals that it's creator kept for over 10 years. And the game very much suits it's name. On top of that though, the graphics are absolutely ridiculous (and terrible) even by the standards of games form that era.

The guy playing through really isn't very amusing, but he does give you a good idea of what the game is like (completely fucked).

Anyone else know of some weird, rare, and generally fucked up games? Anyone here actually get to play any of those bizarre games? (or we could discuss some of the bizarre ones that you can find on places like tigsource...)

Computing / Bobbias tries Cygwin...
« on: October 18, 2010, 11:12:21 PM »
I think I'm gonna use this as a general thread about any adventures I have using Cygwin (the next best thing to running linux on here, lol).

I tried starting an x server using xinit, and it failed. With a bunch of STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION errors, and it finally said xterm Error 29, errno 11: resource temporarily unavailable, and then startxwin worked. However, when I tried using xinit, it tried making a window as large as it could (kinda like running a game in windowed mode, but at full screen resolution) before it errored out. When I used startxwin, it only drew an xterm window by itself. No full size root window under it. Weird.

EDIT: Ok, the option available from the notification area icon had "Hide Root Window" set. Note to self: Don't deselect that.

Lemon Stealing Whore

Someone sampled that in a dubstep song. Filthy Lemon Whore. Possibly the funniest porn ever recorded, other than

Now I'm in your ass, Yeah! The Musical!

Computing / [Solved itself] Windows cursor is broken.
« on: October 11, 2010, 10:23:24 PM »
Ok, this is a big deal. I don't know how, or what caused it, but my cursor is fucked. I've already tried changing it, and it does "change" but not in any useful way.

As far as I can tell, it looks like instead of drawing the cursor the right way, it's only drawing the top 3 or 4 pixels worth, and then tiling that downward. I can't really screenshot it, since the cursor never shows up in screenshots, but when it's not over text, it's extremely difficult to see.

I noticed the change when I used the touch pad to bring up my desktop after I'd let the laptop sit long enough to turn the screen off (I have it set to 5 minutes). It was fine before, but the moment the screen came back on my cursor was fucked.

EDIT: The problem seems to have solved itself somehow. I downloaded TrendMicro's Housecall, started it, ran HijackThis, closed IE (which I had opened to get Housecall, because I forgot it's not an in-browser thing any more) and apparently closing IE fixed it. (I hadn't even told HJT to delete anything yet, and Housecall was still just starting to scan.) This is easily the weirdest issue I've ever had when it comes to computers.

Creation Station / Crazy shit I just made.
« on: August 10, 2010, 09:36:53 PM »
Behold, my bizarre and possibly headache inducing sound experiments.

I am checking out AudioMulch, which is a really weird program. The first track is a severely mangled version of the amen break. It's not as mangled as it sounded before, simply because I layered the original break over top of the mangled version to make it more usable. Now I can use it as a loop in FL or something.

http://bobbias.soundfolder.com/ has both of them. The first track is Amen, and the second one is Funky Shit.

The second track is some weird-ass creation I came up with just by fucking around in the program.

I use a loop player to loop a single electronic piano sound, but I have it set to play the sound as a 5th of a bar of 4/4 time, stretched to fit that timeframe (creating a weird plucked sound).

I have that feeding into a RissetFilter, which is basically a Risset Tone (aka Shepard Tone as a glissando) with some noise (who's volume I have automated).

I have an arpeggiator using slightly detuned square waves feeding into an effect that simulates spatial movement, and I feed the right channel of the RissetFilter into a Bitcrusher (which I've automated).

That is the left channel. The right channel is the reverb send output of the spatial movement filter, without being crushed.

Computing / Linux from an SD card?
« on: July 20, 2010, 10:00:46 PM »
So, I've been thinking about trying linux out on this thing. Of course, I still don't know if my wireless card is actually supported or not.

But Since my burner is useless, I was wondering if there was a way to install a distro from an SD card. I don't mean run a live distro, but actually boot the installer and install linux onto a partition from the card.

And while I'm at it, I'll ask which distro would be a good idea for me to check out, since every time I chose one, I end up screwed over, either by something with no real support because it's to new, or by something that is just stupidly unstable and unusable (oldschool fedora :<)

Gaming / Starcraft.
« on: June 23, 2010, 10:47:08 PM »
So, in case people missed my post about it in the "what're you playing" thread, I've been trying to get better at starcraft.

I was wondering if anyone's up for some matches sometime. I'd like to play against another human, rather than just the computer, because the computer is too predictable, and easily exploitable (attack main base at beginning, AI pulls all workers, micro around, get tons of resources).

I'm absolutely horrible at the game (I think I average 50 APM... That's absolutely atrocious.) but I'm working on learning.

The only catch is that I can't play on regular battle.net

But I can still play online, thanks to the private b.net server on iCCup.com. That link sends you to the "how to start" page on there, detailing how to get connected to their server. It's not hard, and either requires a registry file, or simply using any of the b.net gateway editors. The other thing is that they have a custom launcher for their anti-hack system, which also loads up an add-in that can modify a couple things (reduce latency, among other things.)

It's easy as hell, so that shouldn't be a reason not to get on here and play me a couple rounds. I need to get better, and playing against other people is the best way to do that. Only problem on iCCup is that it's heavily competitive, so many of the players are quite good, and there was just a season reset, so all the ranks are messed up, and some of the really great players are still low ranked.
