Computing / Burner can't burn??
« on: June 22, 2010, 09:05:15 PM »
Somehow, my burner got messed up, and I can't burn anything. Windows recognizes it as burnable, but nothing else does. I've reinstalled the drivers, and still nothing. I need to burn a DVD iso, but it just won't work. DVD decryptor froze in the middle of burning a while back, and since then it's been like this.

Computing / DVD decrypter locking up
« on: June 14, 2010, 08:53:00 PM »
I've been trying to burn a copy of Beatmania 15, but every time I try to burn it with DVD Decrypter, the program burns the lead in, begins writing, and stops. The disk still spins, but it does nothing. And I can't even abort the burn in decrypter. Last time I had to hard reboot my computer just to close it, because the task manager window wouldn't even show up (the tray icon did, but the window never showed up).

What the fuck is happening?

Media / Working on a remix
« on: April 13, 2010, 08:30:34 PM »
So I decided to dust off Fruityloops and see if I could put something half decent together.

I chose Children, by Robert Miles, for the track to remix. Right now, I've got the piano melody down, and some simple drums, bass and a lot of effects work on everything. Of course, I don't even know what I want to do with it yet, so it's all pretty simple. I may post a WIP sometime soon and I feel like mixing it down.

EDIT: Posted Here because it's easy, and lets you guys stream it if you want.

There's one section of the melody that I think my timing is off with, but I can't quite figure out. It's the section at 21 second. It feels rushed to me, but because it feels so close to the real timing, I'm not sure how much I need to change it.

Also, if anyone else here uses FL studio, I'd love to work on a collaboration with someone. I'm terrible at writing melodies, but I know my way around audio production rather well, since that's ultimately what I'd love to do with my life, and I can make some pretty interesting drum beats, and such.

Also, the melody order is gonna change, as well. Like I said, this is a very early production. For all I know I could decide to make it an Electro remix, or even a Drum and Bass remix right now. This is mostly just getting the melody, timing, and some effects down. I really like how the piano sounds right now.

EDIT: Also, I realized this is in the wrong section, lol.

Computing / What the hell could have happened?
« on: September 24, 2009, 10:01:18 AM »
So, I was talking to a friend in college today, and he said something really weird happened to his computer. He said that it wouldn't turn on for a while, and then he decided to unplug the power supply and plug it back in. when he turned his computer on, he saw a bright light coming form inside (he had the case open) and all of a sudden it worked.

I'm just wondering what the fuck could have happened. You'd think that if there was some sort of discharge or spark between anything that he'd fry something and kill the computer, but it appears to work fine now.

Computing / Printer sharing between vista laptops isn't working.
« on: September 18, 2009, 05:32:56 PM »
So, apparently according to my laptop, my mom's computer doesn't exist. My brother's computer, which runs XP is visible, and so is my linux based (SAMBA share) MyBook NAS.... And yet my mom's windows vista running laptop does not show up to my (vista running) laptop.

On top of that, her network window says there's nothing else on the network with her.

What the fuck?

I'm trying to get printer sharing to work, and my mom's computer is apparently deaf dumb and blind when it comes to network sharing. Everything is enabled, it's on the same workgroup, as far as I can tell, it should be visible. On top of that, trying to confirm that the printer itself is shared by searching for all shared stuff on her computer yields nothing, despite the fact that there should be the printer there.

So if anyone has any clue as to why her computer refuses to acknowledge that there are other computers in the house, and that it should be set to share her printer, let me know. This is getting stupid.

Computing / My mom's laptop is fucked up.
« on: August 13, 2009, 09:24:55 AM »
Apparently as far as my mom's Dell Inspiron 1525 thinks the DNS servers are down. They are not (hence why I am able to post this from my laptop, connected to the same network).

This is kinda a big issue, since my mom uses her laptop for work.

It connects to the network perfectly fine, but only has local access. On top of that, pinging anything other than the router results in 100% packet loss. Including pinging it's own LAN IP address.

Pinging the DNS servers returns a proper response, curiously. I've flushed the DNS cache with no change, I've renewed the connection, with no change. I've rebooted the router, and the computer, with no change.

I'm at a loss for what to do.

EDIT: Apparently this happened just after she installed a bios update from dell. One of their programs came up saying there was an available update for her bios, and I told her she should update, because it's always good to be up to date.

Random Chat / Twitter, Facebook, and Iran
« on: June 19, 2009, 02:34:27 AM »
Has anyone been following the events unfolding in Iran lately? I can't believe how quickly this has escalated from a small scale riot to mass demonstrations that threaten to lead to either a massacre or possibly a civil war.

Honestly, I hope Mousavi gets into power, because although he was (like most high level politicians) part of the revolution, he has risen to be the leading figure in the reformist movement within Iran, preaching individual rights, and a much more liberal approach to many things.

Unfortunately, at this point, the only way Mousavi will likely attain power is by bloodshed. There's not enough political support for him to have much of a chance to legally attain power, even if it is proven that the election was rigged. But there is a chance that because the local security forces are much less loyal to the government than the IRGC is, many people may defect from the more local forces and join the people, and possibly even fight for a revolution (or at least fight for a coup to remove Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in place of Mir-Hossein Mousavi). However, for that to happen, there would likely need to be a military crackdown on the protesters, and it's still far from certain, since the IRGC is much like the SS was in Nazi Germany.

Anyone else got some thoughts on this?

Computing / Help. StackHash crashes when I right-click files...
« on: November 25, 2008, 04:07:40 PM »
Ok, since nobody seems to be looking at my post in the Vista Tips thread (stuck it there because this is a vista  related problem), I'll repost it here.

I'm having a bit of a big problem with my computer right now. I cannot right click files. Period. I can't even use the keyboard shortcuts. Whenever I do, explorer crashes.

I'd kinda like to be able to right click files and get a context menu. It makes it hard to navigate some things, not to mention the fact that for some reason the "empty recycle bin" button also causes this crash.

At first glance, it seems to have something to do with DEP, but forcing it to ignore explorer doesn't change anything. I have done some googling, but this seems to be a VERY problematic crash. It's common, but it seems to affect many different programs, and likely has many causes (or is a virus that has not been linked to it and causes this issue in many different ways.

So I'm stumped. I've done system restores and everything, all to no avail, so uhh, anyone got any idea what the christ is going on?

EDIT: Installed AVG, scanned, and nothing. Well, it caught 2 unrelated trojans. Oddly, the resident shield now doesn't work. Originally, it was working, according to AVG, but I wanted to test if anything had changed by right-clicking a file... Nope, explorer still crashed, and then AVG suddenly reported that the Resident Shield stopped running, and it hasn't reported that is has been running since (albeit the "protected for" counter has still been counting up).

This is REALLY being a pain...

Computing / Looking to get a new Router and/or Modem
« on: November 11, 2008, 02:27:30 PM »
Well, the current router I'm using sucks, it never forwards ports properly, the internal web server crashes after "applying" most if not all settings, and in general I'm constantly having trouble with it.

The other thing is that I think the modem we have is also a piece of crap. The SNR is about 5 dB (poor, 1 dB lower than the nominal recommended lowest value) and the line consumption is high (Idles at 88% consumption).

Our internet tends to just disconnect (requiring a modem reset) fairly often when I'm dealing with pages with numerous images (worse if they're hosted on different servers, such as many images from imageshack), though it can happen at any time. I'm pretty sure that is caused by the modem hitting the maximum line consumption rate and kicking off the connection (or alternately, crashing the entire modem, since it requires an actual reset to connect again).

My mom recently got a Dell laptop and between hers, mine, and my brother on my desktop computer in the basement, we see the net go down as many times as 5 times in an hour sometimes. It can stay relatively stable over periods as long as 6 hours, or it can crash 4 or 5 times in a row. It's really becoming a problem for everyone, and so my mom is thinking of replacing the router and/or modem.

Considering they're both like, 4 or 5 years old now, I'd say we're due for an update as well, but I know very little about what brands to look for, and what to stay away from.

I'm not sure what info you might need to find a modem that would work for us, but if you could give me some input on routers, that'd help.

Right now we're using a linksys router (it's not being sold on their site any more) with 4 Ethernet ports and wireless B access.

Gaming / There some way to display an FPS counter in games?
« on: November 03, 2008, 04:05:12 PM »
Specifically, games that don't seem to have one built in?

I'm talking specifically about Atlantica Online, as I would like to tweak my system a bit and I'd really like to see the FPC I'm actually getting when I change all the settings around and such, but the game doesn't have an FPS counter built in, that I can tell.
