Computing / YAY more computer-related problems 8D
« on: May 26, 2008, 11:13:34 PM »
I was drunk one night several months ago and ordered this keyboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823109031

Apparently I retain my taste in electronics when I'm under the influence, because it has been an awesome keyboard and mouse. I love all the extra buttons and the intuitive ergonomic shape.

My problem now is that it's skipping keys very often, and it's unbelievably aggravating. My WPM has gone down because my mind is dedicating more focus to whether or not my words are complete, and it sucks a lot. It started doing this a month or so ago, and I don't think there was any particular reason for it. It just started happening.

I haven't noticed any kind of pattern, like which keys are missed more than others. It seems to be totally random. The keys register fine if I put extra pressure on them, but that's hard on my hands, and also slows my typing speed since my fingers need to just smoothly glide across the keyboard. I took all the keys off a couple weeks ago and cleaned the hell out of it, but it still does it. It's got brand new batteries. And with or without the drivers installed, it persists :[ I don't know what else to try, and I fear that it may just be dying.

Any ideas?

Computing / I need a new video card
« on: May 26, 2008, 03:50:02 PM »
So I have gotten myself a bunch of new computer shit, including a new mobo, 2 gigglebytes of RAM, and a power supply. Now, all I need is a new video card. The problem is, I don't know much about such things, and was hoping to get some suggestions. I have a limited budget, and would prefer something at, or below $120. I'm not a gamer, and I don't plan on rendering super complex 3D graphics, so hopefully that helps.

This is my motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131246

Random Chat / Health and Fitness

I remember there was one of these threads on a0 or an older version of s.net or something, so I'm going to recreate it since it's a pretty important subject.

Recently, I've been paying a lot more attention to my general health, and researching nutrition, weight-loss, hygiene, etc., and it's one of the few things I'm genuinely interested in. I'd be more than happy to answer any questions anyone has, because I think everyone can benefit from this kind of information. I'm no expert nutritionist, but I've lived in a very healthy family my entire life, and have picked up little factoids here and there, as well as my own personally acquired info.

So let us all join hands and discuss a topic that is not discussed nearly enough in the world. If you have any questions, tips, links, or WHATEVA then post them here.

I have a question to get things going... just out of curiosity, how many of you s.net residents (Snetters?) floss on a regular basis?

Computing / What the hell :[
« on: May 25, 2008, 03:10:05 PM »
Yesterday I formatted my computer and installed a fresh copy of XP, and I've encountered a weird issue involving file names being shortened. Check out the attachment... Notice how some of the folder names are shortened and an ellipses is appended to it? This is just my music folder, but it does this for everything. I should also note that I don't use Windows Explorer, I use something else called Xplorer2 Pro, but it happens in both file browsers.

Anybody know why this is happening and how to fix it? It's really annoying and totally pointless.

Computing / Anyone tried out Firefox 3 yet?
« on: May 23, 2008, 04:51:56 PM »
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-rc.html

I must say, I'm VERY happy with the direction this version is going. It's noticeably faster, and quite stable. The new address bar is great, too.

I've got to go to work now, but let's have a Firefox discussion, shall we?!?!

Computing / Emmer Effing Pop-ups
« on: January 14, 2008, 01:33:31 AM »
So I just randomly started getting pop-ups on my computer for the first time in years, probably. I have no idea how or why they came, nor am I finding success in getting rid of them.

I wonder how they even got past the virus/spy/adware removal/protection software I have installed. I ran AVG and it found one trojan which was removed, and I also ran Ad-aware which found a few problems, also removing them. AVG's spyware removal found nothing. These are all I've really needed for the past while, and they have done their job quite well. I ran a registry cleaner, as well as a process scanner, neither of which did anything.

My firewall is at least keeping the content from loading on the page, but the IE windows still come up, usually a few at a time.

Does anyone have anymore suggestions for me? I would hate to have to go back to a restore point, because it was about four days ago that this started happening, but I will if needed.

EDIT: Also, if this helps, it has been making my internet connection VERY sluggish. Like, downloading something from Download.com at about 5 Kbps when I'm used to around 250 to 300... Websites seem to be taking longer as well.

Computing / MOTHERFUCKING AUTOMATIC UPDATES
« on: January 09, 2008, 06:52:48 AM »
Okay I'm pretty much fed up with them now.

So you know how every now and then Windows will show that dumb little yellow shield in the task tray and you can click it and install them, yes? Well I don't know what the deal is with mine, but regardless of whether or not I turn them off, the notification shield is always there. I can go ahead and download and install them, but about five minutes later, it will come up again with some more updates, or the same ones, I'm not sure (although it never says anything about them failing to download or install.)

But mainly, my question is this: How do I prevent it from popping that piece of shit dialog box up where my only options are to restart now or have this asshole box take focus of all my windows and screw up whatever I'm doing every five minutes?

Of course, the problem might be that my copy of Windows XP Pro isn't exactly "official" and thus has some screwy things going on.

DARN YOU WINDOWSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!! :'[

Computing / PHP Assistance Required
« on: January 03, 2008, 07:54:46 PM »
I'm an absolute beginner at PHP, and I'm trying to finish up this stupid-ass website for someone I know so I don't have to bother with it anymore.

Here's the setup I've got right now:

I have an index.php file with three includes in it; one for the header, one for the main page content, and one for the footer, and that's it.

When you visit the site, the index file includes header.php, home.php and footer.php. A very basic situation indeed.

My question is this: how would I modify regular HTML links in order to get them to replace whatever page you're on with a new one?

Example: You're on the home page (home.php), and you click a link to go to the contact page (contact.php). I obviously can't just make the link to contact.php, otherwise it will only load that page, and not the header or footer. I only want to put contact.php where home.php is.

This is probably the simplest of simple questions, and I really just want the easiest way to do it because I seriously do not want to have this crappy project on my plate anymore. I'm not interested in restructuring the site (unless I fucked up somehow and I'd have to to make this work).

I don't know any PHP functions so that makes it kinda hard to search for a tutorial on such a thing.

/ I'll get this out of the way before I forget.

Like I mentioned in the Lame Replies thread, I have decided that I'm going to become famous some day. And while I'm famous and wealthy, I was just wondering who all would like a mansion. So yeah, basically, they're going to be deep, deep underground and mostly used for dangerous and highly illegal experiments. That's all I can really tell you right now :/. MortifiedOcelot and Bobbias have both called one already.

So yeah, please let me know early so that when I'm super rich and popular and stuff, I will know how many mansions to get from the mansion store.

Thanks, everyone!

Gaming / Rock Band
« on: November 22, 2007, 03:25:50 PM »
So the other night, a couple of my friends bought the game, and I had the pleasure of playing it with them on a very large widescreen HDTV. It was pretty cool because we had a full band of four people. We switched off with different instruments, but I got to sing, play the drums, and play the guitar.

All in all I think it's a really cool idea for a game, but it needs several improvements, obviously, since it's the first version. One thing I did not like about the guitar is that the notes were kind of hard to read for me. The hammer-ons were sort of hard to tell apart from the others, though that may be just because I am used to Guitar Heroes.

I'm no video game critic so I'll stop here, but as far as whether or not I think this game will kill Guitar Heroes, I don't think so, but I haven't had enough time to play it to know for sure.

Has anyone else played it?

Creation Station / !!!
« on: October 21, 2007, 11:29:41 PM »
Word up everybody.

I haven't been creationing much lately, but I have some stuff that I don't think (m)any of you have seen. I seriously don't feel like it's important enough to host on my site, so I'll just link from my deviantArt account.

I know you've seen my first three comics, but I made a fourth one and I don't think I've shown anyone here.
 - "Introductory Comic"
 - "Dog Trick"
 - "Smokin' Drugs"
 - "Alien"

This following image got me a "Daily Deviation" on dA which was a very pleasant surpise. It's got almost 500 comments and 1130 favorites, so apparently a lot of people liked it XD. One of these days I'm going to make it into a format that works on a t-shirt and submit it to Threadless.com.
 - "If Flowers Could Talk"

This is Ball Beaver:
 - "Ball Beaver"

This is one of my first experiments with fractal-making using Apophysis. It's a little different than a lot of the fractal art on dA:
 - "Supernova"

That's it for now. If I ever start making things again, I'll holla.
