Computing / Laptop frustrations....
« on: February 05, 2013, 12:58:55 AM »
Hi guys, this place looks like a ghost town : [

My laptop recently took a fall from my bed (about 2.5 feet) onto the carpet and the battery has not been able to charge since. My first inclination was that the dc connector got broken, as this is a very common problem. So, I ordered the replacement part and installed it. Turns out, it still won't charge. I pulled out the battery and it turns out it runs fine on AC power. If I plug the battery back in, windows stops acknowledging the AC connection and uses the battery. So, my laptop now functions one of either two ways-- uncharging on battery, or on AC with the battery unplugged.

I called HP and they told me that it could be a broken voltage converter on the motherboard (wtf?) or a windows problem. The tech suggested reinstalling windows first to see if it wasn't hardware. Sigh. Actually, now that I think about this I'm just going to try a ubuntu live cd. I'll post back later when I've tested this. >.>     <.<    >.>

edit:

So it turns out ubuntu recognizes that both are attached, but suffers from the same problem. I doubt that the battery is bad, since the computer is barely over a year old and I've put less than 30 charge cycles on it.

Iaaaaaaannnnnnnnn

I guess that's both a good and a bad thing. I'll try to post regularly on here again... Momentum is good.

I'm an ovo-lacto vegetarian. I am, in fact, one of those assholes that won't eat meat even in cases where it won't make a difference. I only buy free-range eggs, too. I find it incredibly ironic that I even bought Maddox's "For every animal you don't eat, I'm going to eat three" t-shirt after I read his first article on vegetarianism.

I don't think I'm a dick about my vegetarianism, and I certainly try to not be pretentious about it. It's not a big deal, and too many people make a fuss over it. I'm just trying to help out where I can, and I know that my diet is making a difference.

I didn't even plan on being vegetarian. My girlfriend is vegetarian, and after being with her after a couple months, I saw how easy it was and decided to try it out after I had incidentally already gone 4 days without meat. I have a few reasons why I stuck with it, but I don't think it's worth getting into in this post.

ANYWAYS...

I've never had pet die on me, for some reason my family has always found new homes for them when we moved. Which is funny after 2 dogs, 3 cats, a bird, a fish, and 2 chinchillas. What.

I'm going to be enlisting into the air force... Right now they aren't accepting new recruits due to their manpower being at 300%. Autumn's my favorite season, with spring in a close second. My birfday's the 13th, and my friends are throwing me a party! ^_^

Yeah, like me.

sorry d00d

Hey guys! :] It's been a while.

Fortunately, I've been keeping the same job at JC Penney since 1/08 and today I was even offered another one. It's to be an on-call dough roller for a pizza place down the street, and it's pretty surprising considering the economy. I can't help but feel I'm just taking a job that somebody else could really need. :[

Edit:
Added porn.

Computing / GRUB is being a grub, indeed.
« on: May 20, 2009, 10:23:20 PM »
Background:

I have a dual boot of Ubuntu 9.04 and Windows XP. The Ubuntu installation was actually an installation from Wubi, and I decided to make a swap partition and Ext3 partition for the upgrade. I used LVPM to transfer the drive contents onto the new ext3 partition, and LVPM installed GRUB.

The problem is that GRUB won't boot the new partition. I'm not sure which partition it needs, but when I fiddle with the (hdX,Y) for it I'll either get an error saying its unable to mount the partition or it just goes back to the menu. How can I know specifically what to specify for (hdX,Y) and are there other parameters I would need to specify as well? I'm also considering that the partitions aren't set up correctly, (possible formatting error, bad order of the partitions on the disk?)

5/21 update:

Fuck it. I've already learned to not store important crap on the same partition as my operating system. I'm just going to wipe it and start legit. If anyone stumbles across this page from a search engine and has problems with booting an new partition from Wubi, trade the headache for a little hassle. After all, how many hours will it take trying to fix it when you could have just done it right from scratch in less time? (remember your windows partition is in /host)

Thankies

Why not use the computer you're using now, put the drivers on a jumpdrive or CD, and do it that way? I suppose you could use a live cd of linux and get the job done, but I'd imagine that you've formatted your drive in NTFS, and I'm not too sure on how many linux live cds other than Ubuntu come with ntfs-3g or something to support it.

Hey guys. :]

I've always been on meebo, (msn, yahoo, aim, gtalk, icq, etc) so those who wanted to get a hold of me always could... :P And not to bust bobbias's bubble, but I suppose once or twice a month can constitute "here and again".

They sell Nike skeets at my work. When we got them, it was very lulzy.
