What's doubly cool is that when you give cashiers US dollars they give you Canadian change.

This leads me to believe the country is full of math geniuses/economists who can calculate the daily exchange rate from memory.

$1 coins around here are still in moderate use, but that's mostly because all the vending machines on campus dispense them as change.

Code: [Select]
f(u,c,k,_,y,e,a,h)
{return u*u*u*u-u*u*u*_+u*u*y-u*e+a?k?f(u+1,c,k-1,_,y,e,a,h):0:putchar(u-c+h)==f(u+1,u,k-1,_,y,e,a,h);}
main(){return f(0,0,34,84,2423,26628,72864,98)<putchar(32)>f(0,0,40,125,5809,118995,906750,96)==~putchar(10);}

We decided that since paper money is easily destroyed, and $1 bills would be damn common, they would be thew ones getting most damaged. So instead of having to constantly make more bills to replace the ones that are damaged, we decided on something that's a lot tougher.

And the $2 coin (the toonie) came in 1996. According to wikipedia: "It costs 16 cents to mint a Toonie, which is estimated to last 20 years. The discontinued two-dollar bill cost six cents to print and, on average, each bill lasted only one year." They are also more convenient than having a ton of loonies when you've got a considerable amount of coinage.

Also, we have different colored bills because it's easier to tell them apart without having to actually read anything. If you see a blue bill, you know it's a 5, if it's purple, 10, green, a 20, red, a 50, and brown, a 100.

lol. well, they do weigh more, but in general, your not going to have more than 5 or so of them on you at any given time, and most places will give you toonies to avoide having too many coins, if they're giving you change less than $5.

Yeah, I can understand using bills for some of the larger denominations, especially colored, so you can easily tell the difference. If you had coins for all those different values, you would either have to create a bunch of different sizes, and some would be huge, or come up with some way to easily tell the difference, because you'd have so many different types that all looked alike.

But considering that a bill is so easily damaged, coins definitely make more sense.

Oh yeah, another thing, while I haven't visited Canada, I noticed that in the Czech Republic, Switzerland, England, and anywhere that uses the Euro, all of the bills are different sizes and colors.

Code: [Select]
f(u,c,k,_,y,e,a,h)
{return u*u*u*u-u*u*u*_+u*u*y-u*e+a?k?f(u+1,c,k-1,_,y,e,a,h):0:putchar(u-c+h)==f(u+1,u,k-1,_,y,e,a,h);}
main(){return f(0,0,34,84,2423,26628,72864,98)<putchar(32)>f(0,0,40,125,5809,118995,906750,96)==~putchar(10);}

I guess I just remembered wrong, but I could have sworn there were times where I didn't get pennies where it would make sense (ie if I had 4 cents in change, then they'd just give me a 5-cent coin)

It's probably because every other country seems to understand that pennies are annoying.

Code: [Select]
f(u,c,k,_,y,e,a,h)
{return u*u*u*u-u*u*u*_+u*u*y-u*e+a?k?f(u+1,c,k-1,_,y,e,a,h):0:putchar(u-c+h)==f(u+1,u,k-1,_,y,e,a,h);}

i was going to say, ive seen/used many a canadian penny(dime, nickle, whatever).  it's a small copper coin, nobody really cares if it's canadian or not.

i hope i live long enough to see the penny go out of circulation.  and i hope that's within 5 years.

If anyone had actually read the wikipedia article, they'd notice that there is currently a bill on the floor that, if ratified, would abolish the penny. Strangely, I'm not so sure that will happen. I could be wrong, but considering that the section on wikipedia was the first I'd heard of that, I doubt it's making a very large splash in the political arena.
