256 vertical pixels would let you render at either PAL or NTSC and still give room for UI elements.

It might have also had greater compatibility with video hardware.  Oddball resolutions can be done on most monitors without a problem, but the video card needs to be able to be massaged into using it.

Right, I forgot about the UI aspect. And yeah, i guess 256x224 would have been damn hard to get nearly any card to do, lol.

This reminds me of how much I'd like to experiment using either an FPGA or something like a Parallax Propeller to generate video signals and such.... (And how much I'd love to actually get my hands on an FPGA in the first place). If only I had a bit of disposable cash. As it stands I've been flat broke since before the end of the summer semester, and I still haven't found a co-op position for this semester :S
This is going in my sig. :)

I'm not really sure if that was the reason, but given how odd video hardware was back in the DOS days it wouldn't surprise me.

I think the NTSC and PAL support (since PAL has more visible scanlines) in addition to a little bit of space for some UI elements and/or letterboxing and/or overscan area is the most likely reason.

I'm at a complete loss when it comes to screen resolution, no clue what my monitor is even at.

If you're really, really curious, you can do one of the following:

On XP, right-click the desktop and click "properties."  The screen resolution is set in the right-most tab ("Settings", I believe it's called).

On Vista, right-click the desktop and click "personalize."  The screen resolution is set in the "screen resolution" applet.

On 7, right-click the desktop and click "Screen Resolution."

Not like it really matters much anymore.  LCDs are good at feeding your video card their native resolution, and your video card drivers are good about picking it.  The only time you really have to fuss with it is when you're tweaking game settings or setting up a CRT monitor.

I'm so glad someone finally said this.

People have been saying that for years.  The only difference is that usually it's the PC people talking about that kind of stuff.

Pretty cool that the CEO of Nintendo (of all people) seems to be pretty down to earth when it comes to piracy, though.  Most console developers flip the hell out over it.

Nintendo still practices region-locking. Sony has won this generation

Only if you're a weeaboo.

but no really, I never understood region locking.

Also Bad Company 2 and Splinter Cell keep crashing on me today and I have no idea why.

I always thought region locking was completely and utterly retarded.  All it winds up doing is encouraging people to modify their console to give it the ability to, you guessed it, play pirated games.

I thought region locking was done to avoid any possible licensing issues. Plus isn't the PS3 only region free if the game makers specifically make the game region free?

No, it wouldn't matter if Sony wanted to region lock PS3 games in the first place. Region 1 bluray discs include both Japan and the US.

Otherwise yeah, it's a matter of licensing problems and that's perfectly understandable. I personally never understood why everyone just goes, "It's retarded!" without ever actually thinking past themselves. Then again, gamers are largely some of the most selfish people ever.
