This just doesn't make sense...
« on: August 03, 2010, 06:39:57 PM »
I have decided to create a thread for this because it's becoming quite a hindrance in my computer using routine.

The position of my (wired) keyboard is somehow affecting the signal for my wireless mouse.

My setup is as follows: I sit on my bed with my monitor on a shelf in front of me. My keyboard sits on my lap and my mouse is usually on my bed to the right of me. My computer is on a shelf above my monitor with the mouse's receiver plugged into the front. There is nothing obstructing the path from the receiver and there is only about four feet between the two.

For some reason, the position of my legs or the keyboard being too close to the mouse makes the cursor jumpy and slow. I have actually tested this many times by holding the keyboard close to the mouse while moving the mouse around then moving the keyboard away and the difference is obvious. To be able to use my computer functionally I have to leave about three feet between my keyboard and mouse.

Things I've ruled out:
 - the batteries are fine; I've changed them twice
 - the mouse can work from over 10 feet away (as long as the keyboard isn't next to it of course)
 - the receiver plugged into any USB port yields the same results

I've noticed when I'm using programs that tend to use more memory this problem gets worse, but the fact that the (again, WIRED) keyboard is affecting the mouse just by proximity doesn't register in my brain. Am I missing something about the mechanics of wireless mice or does my mouse just hold some kind of prejudice against wired technology?

Will someone please tell me what the shit is going on because it's driving me insane.

Maybe there's some kind of interference? I had this problem for a while but it turned out just to be my batteries. I really have no idea either @_@

What kind of keyboard do you have?  It might have some whiz-bang circuitry that the wireless signal isn't a fan of.

It's a Logitech Access Keyboard 600 and a Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 3000.

Hmm, doesn't look like there's really anything fancy going on with that keyboard.  Swapping it temporarily just to rule it out couldn't hurt, but I don't think that would really do anything for you.

As for that mouse, I actually have the same one and I wound up retiring it due to reception issues (I used to use it for my laptop, then when I found it to be unfit for that, we started using it for our HTPC, then ditched it when it couldn't even manage that). :/  The issues were similar to what you were experiencing.  If you tried to use your leg as a mouse pad it wouldn't work.  If you had it too close to the receiver it wouldn't work (on my laptop, it didn't work well if I used the rear USB ports; I had to plug it into the ones on the left side to get a somewhat decent signal).  If you looked at it the wrong way it wouldn't work.

Based on my experiences with that alone, and the fact that you seem to be having the same problems, I'd probably just look into getting another one.  I would probably recommend going with Logitech, though.  My dad bought the Microsoft Wireless Desktop 6000 for his computer and, though the keyboard works very well, the mouse has many of the same issues that the 3000 has.  Logitech, on the other hand, has always had very solid wireless technology.  Just avoid Logitech's more expensive offerings, because it seems like the more they charge the worse of a job they do.

Perhaps the semen on your bed sheets have joined forces and created an aura of interference that does want you to sit on your bed and watch porn for you are killing lots and lots of possible little Sqthreers.  Just a thought, but I know I'm probably wrong.

I'll have you know that my semen never reach the light of day. Well not until I pee later at least. Yeah that's right I hold it in SO WHAT. It's cleaner that way... and unhealthy so I hear :[

Anyway, I think based on Spectere's insights and my own, I just need to get a new mouse. I had a better wireless mouse but I gave it to a girl :\ Before that I had an even BETTER one that had a total of 9 buttons on it and it was a dream.

Also I can vouch for Logitech producing quality products. Most of my good experiences with computer technology were Logitech stuffs. This keyboard I have right now rocks my smocks.

So I'm the only person who wouldn't recommend Logitec? I have controller and a mouse they made, and both are faulty. The Dpad on the controller is sticking, and the mouses scroll wheel will not work, and it will randomly go nuts and spin around constantly.

I guess you are. I've had a number of logitech products and never had a problem. I've gone through a number of them simply because my brother and I are kinda hard on electronics.

Also, I have a cool little targus mouse for my laptop that woks quite well. Never used targus products before, but it seems to be a good mouse. Only issue is that occasionally it sends some bizarre signal and my mouse goes flying to one of the screen corners and shit. Not usually an issue except in games.
This is going in my sig. :)

Well my opinion is based on all the various devices I've come in contact with and a few testimonials from friends. Most of my experiences have been pretty good. Their design and style is very appealing to me, too. The shapes and colors they use are less distracting to me than other companies for some reason :/

Like I said, I don't recommend Logitech's more expensive offerings.  The only Logitech devices that I've seen die like crazy are the G5 laser mice.  I'm not particularly impressed with my current MX518, either (scroll wheel issues...not as bad as my G5, but not nearly as good as my old MX510).

I use a fairly new basic Logitech mouse with a scroll wheel at work, however, and that thing kicks ass.  If it had side buttons I'd order one for home.  Logitech's wireless technology is also the best I've seen yet, with Apple's wireless offerings matching it.

Suppose I'm just unlucky. I'd LOVE this mouse if it worked right (when it does work it's great, plus it's really good on batteries).
