So I didn't really mention anything on here, but I recently moved out of my cold shitty college house to a nice new suburban house, it has a dishwasher too which is sweet.
Edit: also I did have some money issues but thanks to a nice financial advisor I'll be receiving some bursary money, so far a most excellent day.

Hay guiz, check out my new computer:

Apologies for the poor picture quality.  The one without flash looked bad due to blur (because the HD7 has the hardest-to-press camera button in the world), my work iPhone 3G made it look like a blurry mess, and my iPod just mutilated it.

But anyhoo, it's kind of a shame that the C128 has the "fixed" SID chip, but this acquisition should still prove to be pretty awesome.  Now to get an RCA splitter and a 3.5mm jack adapter so that I can pump some SID through the beefier speakers I have on my desk.  Using the built-in speaker on the monitor is far too simple for my tastes.

Edit: I went through the disks that I received with the computer and found a Quantum-Link disk.  That is now, officially, the oldest version of AOL that I've ever had in my possession.

Hmm...C64 mode or C128 mode?

Or, hell, CP/M mode.  The C128 has a 2 MHz Z80 and shipped with CP/M disks (which I have). :p

Also, "Fixed" SID?

There were two SID chips, the 6581 and the 8580.  The former is the one that shipped in all C64s and early C128s.  The C128D -- the reduced cost desktop unit (the one pictured) -- has the latter.

The 6581 didn't follow the specifications properly and, thus, the chip had a few bugs, particularly in the filter.  The 8580 chip follows the specs and supports all of the features correctly.  However, as a result of that, not all SID tunes play properly on the 8580.  In general, songs tend to sound muted on the 8580 due to the differences in the filter.

There are some songs that were written for the 8580, but given the dominance of the C64 and the 6581 chip, they are a minority.

In summary, the 6581 is the most popular SID with most songs written for it, but it didn't follow the specification properly.  The 8580 follows the spec to the letter, but is less popular and doesn't match the output of its predecessor.

Ahh, yeah, once you mentioned the issues with the filters, I remembered reading about many C64 songs taking advantage of that.

Indeed.

I did a little bit of checking and it seems like I have the 128DCR, and as far as I can gather it only came with the 8580.  I should take the cover off to find out for sure.  It's a desktop model, so that task should prove to be easy.

I also love how the drive in the C64/128 is single-sided.  I've only used Datasettes in the past (I didn't have a floppy drive for my VIC-20), and my experiences with 5.25" floppies have been on the PC, which always had a dual-sided floppy drive.  I had about thirty seconds of confusion before I noticed that some of the disks had notches on both sides (which is a mark of a high density 1.2MB floppy in the PC world), so I flipped it over for the hell of it and HEY!  Success.

Gotta love it.

Edit: To clarify, the disk drive (1571) in the C128DCR is double-sided, but that feature cannot be used in C64 mode (and almost all of my software -- and double-sided floppies -- are for the C64).  It pretty much dumbs itself down to emulate a 1541.

Speaking of that, you can't truly appreciate the glacial performance of a 1541 via emulation.  Seriously.

Got 2 12" Kenwood subs in a sealed box, Kenwood Mono Amp, Wiring Kit with inline fuse, and power capacitor for about 400 bucks.

Installed it myself in practically one day. The first day was me just researching how to do it, since the only knowledge I had previously was putting in my own front and rear 4-way pioneer speakers. Also first day was spent installing the subs into the box, since they came separately.

Now I am bumping. hell yea

also now have a full time job with weekends off, 630am-330pm. awesome. and they have a game room with ping pong included ;)

1000 good sir.. both subs are Single Voice Coil, so i have short speaker wire connecting the +/- of one to the other, then longer ones from that to the amp and it works wonderfully and sounds fantastical

Nice. 1kw is definitely worth having, though of course 2kw is always better :P

A friend of mine had an alpine 12 inch 2kw sub in the back seat of his car.... It was loud enough to break the rear windshield, lol. God I loved sitting next to that beast (It was in a box for a home theatre, rather than in the car). The car went from seating 5 people to seating 3 with that beast in it, lol.
