GTX 1070 Better than Titan?
« on: August 29, 2016, 05:36:30 PM »
I'm thinking about upgrading and the 1070 price/performance is looking pretty damn good. I read an article in terms of FPS the 1070 beat out Titan X in literally every test. Wtf? The price gap is insanely high for that to be the case.

IIRC the Titan X was basically made to be a benchmark setter. Like the first hypercars. Something that was created just to see what could be done, and when people went "oh wow holy shit, it can do that?" cards started to be made with that sort of technology. So you have the 1080 and the 1070 that can meet or exceed what the Titan X can do and make it readily available to the general public.

I could be totally wrong about the above, but that's what it seemed like to me. Either way, unless you want to do things in resolutions higher than 1080p, the 1070 is probably just fine to upgrade to. It should able to tank pretty much anything you throw at it.

I'm a little late, but I'm going to chime in anyway. :)

One thing to bear in mind is that the Titan X was the granddaddy of the last generation, and the GeForce 1000 series is such a step up that a single 1080 is neck and neck with a pair of 980s, so I can definitely see a 1070 beating a single Titan X. The Titan X does have a slight leg up when it comes to VRAM, but going from 8GB to 12GB isn't really going to make a difference outside of synthetic benchmarks that focus on VRAM consumption and certain computational tasks.
