Dunno if this has been brought up yet, but I was recently introduced to a band called Animal Collective. It's really weird music, but amazingly good. Sort of glitchy/experimental stuff I think, although I suck at genres. There are lyrics, though, and they're fun and interesting.

GO LISTEN MOFUCKAS

A good experiment in music to listen to if you know any of the indie/emo/scene bands is The Sound of Animals Fighting. Each part was recorded completely separately by each singer/artist and put together without any of them knowing what the overall song was supposed to sound like. It is one of those super group things where a whole boatload of people get together for it, sorta like the Avantasia of scene bands. It's pretty good, actually. I really like the music.
This is going in my sig. :)

I hear Animal Collective is really good, but it's also the theme music of pretentious twats : |

So was Opeth, and likely Dream Theater falls under that as well....

Well regardless of the twats, it's still really good.

I suggest the song Peacebone on the Strawberry Jam album.

What, Opeth being pretentious? I mean, prog lends itself to that, just because of the way the genre is, but I've literally overheard a conversation where someone said "Yeah, I tried listening to Animal Collective, and I didn't really like it" and the other guy replied with "Well you just didn't understand it, it's too deep", being serious. That strikes me as pretty silly.

The thing is, there are many people who don't get some of the musical experimentation in stuff like that. I mean, The sound of Animals Fighting is really different. Some people would hate it, just because it's so different, but some people just wouldn't understand the fact that nobody knew what the rest of the song would sound like, so that is why each sound is so separate, they were played with no knowledge of what they would be blending with.

And Opeth's fans were known for being EXTREMELY pretentious, not so much now.

Revival!

I've recently gotten into Korean Hip Hop. This stuff is really good. I've been listening to LeeSsang, ClaZziquai (They're not really hip-hop, but a fusion that covers a couple different genres including electronica, acid jazz and house), 1TYM, Crown J, 8eight, and (though they're not hip-hop) AnyBand, which is a supergroup put together by Motorola to market some of their cell phones through music videos who's theme is that cell phones bring people together. AnyBand includes BoA, Xiah Junsu of TVXQ, Tablo of Epik High (another Korean hip-hop artist), and jazz pianist Jin Bora.

Honestly, this stuff is SO much better than western hip-hop. Here are some Youtube vids for whoever wants to find out what this is all about:

8eight - 사랑을 잃고 난 노래하네 (Forget About Love and Sing)

Leessang - Ballerino (Feat. ALI)

1TYM - Hot (뜨거)

Epik High - FAN

[mkTV] My Life (Boom Remix) - CLAZZIQUAI PROJECT (This is a really weird remix, the original is more straight forward lounge + DnB beats. This really reminds of or Orange Lounge)

Anyband - TPL(Talk Play Love) - Eng Sub (Also has korean subs, transliterated)

Crown J - 그녀를 뺏겠습니다 (I Will Take Her Away) MV

Anyone hear listen to a rapper called Cage? Apparently he's smiler to Immortal, and I haven't the proper software for perfectly legitimate music.

Soooooo, my friend from South Africa has been giving me some of his CDs. In South Africa almost everyone listens to house music. I found a couple of decent songs on there. I hope this shit is frizzy fresh dawg, aight.

Have you checked out my DJ Shadow mix I posted ages ago (in the media forum, I believe)?

It's really awesome if you want to hear a mix between american and african hip-hop and stuff (some of it is more electronic music and stuff, it's a really diverse mix)

It's a really awesome mix.

I've been listening to lots of classical recently (mostly modern wind ensemble stuff). Right now I have on Ravel's arrangement of Mussorgsky's piano piece Pictures at an Exhibition. I love it, but the sax solost on Il Vecchio Castello (second movement of the piece) makes me want to curl up into a ball and cry. I'll send the link if you fellow band geeks want to hear just how bad his tone is.

Sure, lol. And you should list out some names to look for (and maybe info on how hard it is to find that stuff). I'm interested in modern classical music (kinda an oxymoron, but either way.)

I can't stop listening to this korean hip-hop though, lol.
