Software RAID is always an option if you're a cheap bastard like myself.  It might not be as quick as a hardware setup but at least it would give you the same level of redundancy.

True, I didn't realize there WAS such thing as software RAID, lol.

I always thought that in an old setup with no real RAID support you needed a RAID Controller card.

Thankfully no. :)  I think Windows Server and Linux both support software RAID in some form, so you can get away pretty cheaply if you wanted to build a file server with data redundancy.
