That questionably legal place that I linked you to via PM is probably the best start you can get for padstuffs (it has all of the DDR mixes). :3

Awesome man you're a hero <3

Also: my first pad = some used (possibly crappy?) Madcatz thing?  it's blue lozl, they call it a "Beat Pad(tm)," but I'm not sure if I'd beat on it.  I already tested all of the buttons in Windows and they work, so when I finally install Debian in this 1.0 Ghz (I think) HP, I'll be able to jam on that nickel until I get my new adapter (and then I'll probably STILL use that computer lolz).

Yeah, what Bobbias said. XD

The Mad Catz pads are good starter pads.  I don't know if EB Games/GameStop still offers this, but they used to have $3 warranties on the pads -- if anything went wrong in a year they'd replace it for free.  I'm not sure if they still offer it but it's worth a shot.

It's definitely worth it with pads like that, lol.
I've got one of the official pads that got packaged with my DDR, and it's already had a bit of an issue, the start button randomly started to go off and stuff. It stopped a while back, but I had to use tape to separate the contacts for a while for it to work without fucking up... And that's an official pad.

Strange...I've heard generally good reports about Konami soft pads.  Exception to the rule, perhaps?

Soft pads are generally best for things rated under 9 or 10.  I find those to be considerably anything above, say, an 8 to be considerably easier at the arcade. :P

It's funny, because whenever I've played, I tend to do a lot better on soft pads, because I don't have to step very hard at all for it to register, and I can drag my feet all day long and still hit things.

And yeah, the pad I got with DDR Extreme is great, much better than all the other soft pads I've tried. It's held up quite well over the last few months of playing 10's and 11's in ITG.

I've wanted to get a pad for quite some time, to hook up to my computer for use with stepmania. How much would it cost, and how difficult would it be to obtain/set up?

I got a $15 PSX>USB adapter ($4 shipping) from Play-Asia that is extremely sure to work, and a used madcatz pad from a local used game store for $10.  So, about $30 (although there is a way to modify the Stepmania source code in Linux so that you can use cheaper adapters, like the Radio Shack adapter.  I'm trying to do this as I type since my adapter hasn't arrived yet).
