When The Grid comes around, nobody will be able to argue about their e-speedtestpeen :D

You fgts with high numbers probably not only have good internet, but also fairly nearby ISPs or more recently replaced hardware that your internet cables are running through to get to your house <:U

7 megabits per second >:V

Yeah, but how long before there's widespread use of The Grid? ARPA created the IPTO to further the research of the SAGE program in 1958. That networked the US ground radar system together.

The first TCP/IP WAN was created January 1st 1983. That's 25 years between them, and it wasn't till probably th mid 90's before we had real widespread use of the net.

How long before The Grid becomes the most common connection? And Need I remind you how much of a patchwork miracle the current internet is? Quite a few people are saying that it's a miracle the internet even works, considering how patched together it is.
This is going in my sig. :)

Yeah, that's kind of what i was getting at.  The internet is a piece of shit ran through age-old telephone hardware.  The Grid will use its own cable system.  It may be a while before it's really widespread, and it's probably going to hit places like research centers and universities before anywhere else, but when 20X3 comes around and the Grid completely replaces the internet... yeah.  Having a high net speed won't be e-peen worthy anymore :D

The US governemt is probably creaming at the potential 'OH, we must have oversight over this grid before it is available...to prevent...piracy...yea...piracy'

Also, I should point out that The Grid is not even as fast as the fastest Core Routers in the internet. The Grid is supposed to give you speeds of 1 gigabyte per second. That would equal 8 gigabits per second. Most current core routers run on 10 gigabit per second connection, and some of them run on 40 gigabit per second connections. The number they're always using of "10,000 times faster than the current internet infrastructure" is misinformation. It's 10,000 times faster than a 1 megabit per second connection, which is about the lowest normal speed of broadband connections, but as I said before, most core routers in the internet have connections as fast as or faster than The Grid.
This is going in my sig. :)

Haha, yeah, I read that and thought of WoW.

But they're probably talking about virtual reality games. VR games over a network are pretty much impossible right now, I think. Maybe over a small network like a LAN, since we can get much faster speeds than the internet (100 mbit connections over ethernet, and that's standard in every computer now), but any widespread VR game with thousands of players would require a pretty huge amount of bandwidth, both for the players, and for the server.

Yeah, but that article, and I am both referring to the future of games, when The Grid may actually be active. By that time, we may actually have VR games available to the general public.

Lol, well, good luck with that. Better start buying your 16TB+ servers soon, otherwise once the grid comes out you'll run out of space.
