I could tell the difference if I looked at it, but when I skimmed over text I had a hard time because of those two pixels being there.  The shape of the number is completely changed because they don't preserve the proper shape.

It's really bad design...I don't know how something like that would have even gotten into the final product in the first place.  Players shouldn't have to train themselves to look at basic things like numbers differently.

I can tell because the 6 has a slanted line coming off it, and the 5 is much more straight. I don't have to think about it or anything. I didn't even notice that until you mentioned it, lol.
This is going in my sig. :)

Yeah, I know the differences that it has in shape.  I'm not the only one who has an issue with this. In fact, most of the people I've met who play D2 have run into trouble with this.

In many cases it really doesn't matter much whether the number is a 5 or a 6, but either way, this makes it easier to tell the difference.

Yeah. how did you do that, anyway? Just enable anti aliasing in d2?

Nah.  The font graphics are all pre-AA'd bitmaps, so I had to crack open d2data.mpq, extract the fonts (the file that the semi-ambiguous 5 is in is data/local/font/LATIN/font16.dc6), extract the 5, load it into <insert any graphics editor here>, save it, import it back into the dc6 file, import that back into the MPQ, and save the MPQ. *gasps for breath*

Truth be told, it took longer to grab the software than it did to do the work.  The result?  Totally worth it. :)

Seeing as the tail of the five runs into the angled part of the five and the only way to tell that apart from a six is by looking at an angle, I beg to differ.

It's not like I haven't gotten used to having a five with a loop in it for no good reason, either.  At this point it annoys the hell out of me that they would leave that in the game more than anything.

I'd drive to Canadia and slap around their font designer.

Ah, right...I was thinking of Bioware for some reason.

Hey, if it's in California I won't even have to go anywhere!  I can just pay Z to slap them around for me (nevermind the fact that he could very well live four hours from them...he's in the same state, that's all that matters!). :)
