I got the urge to start making stepcharts again, so I grabbed StepMania 5 and, for the first time in a long time, I've actually been impressed by a mainline StepMania version.  Making SM-SSC the mainline branch was the best idea the SM team ever had.  I've never played with SM-SSC (I've been away from SM for quite some time now) but now I wish I would have earlier.  It would have probably been enough to make me interested in charting again.

I think I'm going to have some fun with the new scroll options.  I've never been a fan of the concept of lifts (or rolls, to be honest), but I like how we can now, at long last, truly make PIU-style psyche-out charts (without resorting to bizarre glitches that should have never worked and other things -- like fakes -- that would have been impossible to properly do in 3.9/OITG), and make different scroll types for different difficulties.

I didn't know about any of that... Then again, I prefer my SM oldschool, with none of that crazy stuff anyway, but it's cool that it's there for the people who like it.

That's just the added features.  It seems like it's far more stable as well, and from what I understand the codebase is considerably cleaner than 3.9 and "3.95".  That finally dethroned 3.9 as the recommended download on stepmania.com, so I think it's a good idea to upgrade to that even if you have no intention of using the new charting features.

Already done. Though I'm kinda bothered by the different colors in the Note noteskin being different than what I'm used to. And there's something about how 3.9 handles the visuals of hitting a note (kinda hard for me to describe) that feels cleaner (not the right word :/, no idea how to describe it) when I'm playing. I'm much worse than I used to be at SM but I still seem to be pretty close to as accurate as I used to be...

What were the default life/timing difficulties before?

I'm not sure what the timings used to be or, for that matter, what they are now.  It feels about the same to me, really.

As for the noteskins, there are a ton of ones included in the SM5 distribution.  Failing that, I wouldn't be surprised if someone ported over the old noteskins.

The only thing that really bothers me is that I can't find a bunch of the old simfiles I used to have. I've gone through various hard drives and computers since I used to play all the time, and I've lost a lot of the old simfiles I used to play :/ I can't find most of HSTs files, and I'm sure there are a TON of ones I simply can't remember out there that I'll never get the chance to play again.

Also, this new scoring method throws me off. Seeing scores above 100 million on a regular length song makes me feel weird.
