It had better drubs than MANY anime I've seen. What seems to kill it for you is you don't know how to listen for the emotion and expression in someone speaking Japanese. There are many subtleties that most people miss when listening to a foreign language that show emotion and expression. It seems that I'm able to hear those subtleties in Japanese. I think it's partly because of how often I listen to people speaking Japanese (through anime) and my (albeit rudimentary) knowledge of the language. The better you understand the language (if not the exact words they are using) the better you'll be able to grasp exactly what is going on, and notice those subtle parts in speech.

On the subject of voice actor casting: The only anime dubs I've heard which didn't make me cringe were anything by Studio Ghibli. Because of the Disney/Ghibli partnership, the casting is much better in Ghibli films than pretty much any other anime being dubbed. The voice actors they chose view it as they would a  normal animated movie, where most voice actors who do voices for normal TV anime seem to view it as something different. They don't manage to get a natural sound in their speech, where the actors doing Ghibli stuff do. Compare the voice acting in DBZ to say, the voice acting in Toy Story, or other American animated film. The anime, whether it's Inuyasha, DBZ, or nearly anything else, tends to have MUCH worse and much more unnatural sounding acting. Most voice actors who do anime dubs have little to no experience doing any real decent work. They all come from kids shows, and shit with terrible voice acting to begin with, and haven't had a chance to work on any projects that have natural, high quality voice work.

The way I see it, if anime is going to be dubbed, it deserves the same quality voice acting in America as it does in japan. In japan, a seiyuu is seen as a serious voice actor, and many of them are accomplished singers as well. They are very good at what they do, and take things much more seriously than their American counterparts.
