Wtf awesome? Not sure if you guys know about it or not, I just found out about it recently myself, but its basically a fighting game, where you can make your own characters, or existing characters. For example, here we have homer simpson and peter griffin duking it out -

Pretty neat eh? Its kind of a pain to get the game all together and setup, but afterwards, its a blast. If you guys want, I have a copy already set up with a bunch of cool characters to try out, all i'd need is a place to host the file, rather than having you guys have to download and go through all the crap of setting it up.

I've heard of it. It's tied in with the Touhou scene, isn't it? Lots of people make Touhou characters for it. I've never bothered to get it though.
This is going in my sig. :)

Yeah, for some reason. I never understood the connection, maybe it's just because they're both retro-style games :s

i tried playing mugen, but i never really caught on.

its like stepmania, only with a fighting game.  so unless you work to assemble a ballanced roster, it just isn't there.

Nope, it's not technically free. Every version since I don't know when has an expired license, and the company who made it has since dropped off the face of the earth, so it's technically illegal. But nobody cares.

Uhh....it IS a legal game. The original client comes with 3 characters, which are "kung-fu men".
You CREATE your own characters, and over the years, other people have created these characters. I don't see how it would be illegal.
Its basically the same as Stepmania. The game comes with the client itself, and people make their own songs.

Not so.  MUGEN never made it past the beta stages and every copy in existence nowadays is running with an expired license.

Of course, it is kind of a gray area situation since there will most likely never be official support or updated releases.

Yeah, go read wikipedia, it has a huge section talking about the legality. MUGEN is basically abandonware. More like a combination between vaporware and abandonware.

If it's been abandoned, wouldn't that make it public domain? Also who would bother stopping someone from pirating that?

No.  Things only become public domain when the copyright expires on it (which takes a hellaciously long time).

Also who would bother stopping someone from pirating that?

Nobody would, hence the reason that it's a gray area issue.  The game is abandoned and the creators probably don't give two shits about it getting spread about.
