Well, I made a digital clock in Minecraft 3 weeks ago, and since then I've learned a thing or two about computer architecture. This is my latest project:

It's a 16-bit CPU. It doesn't have a clock, but I'm guessing without any memory instructions it could probably make a clock cycle every 4 seconds. It's got 2 registers, a program counter with conditional jumps implemented, it adds, subtracts, increments, does bitwise logical operations, and is designed to use the same memory for instructions and data. The blue thing in the top right of the first image is a 32-byte block of RAM.

Think that was me. I watched the anime while it was airing, but I still haven't gotten around to watching the movies, so I haven't exactly finished it yet. It's pretty good, though. Basically Bourne Identity in Japan.

Minecraft. I got it in May, didn't really start playing it until about June, didn't start messing with Redstone until about a month ago, and didn't start getting into more complicated Redstone until about 2 weeks ago. Now I'm working on a digital clock.

I've built the display, the decoders, and the hours counter, so all that's left is the minutes counter and the clock generator.

The display. I decided I wanted to make a clock entirely out of wood in the middle of a forest. The display uses pine and oak logs, and all other structures are built using wood planks.

Behind the display. For the minutes, each digit has its own 7-segment decoder and each will have its own counter. For the hours, there's only one 9-segment decoder hooked up to one counter. I decided this would be easier than making two decoders, since the tens digit in the hours only ever makes a 1, and it's only used for 3 hours. The other segments in the tens place are always inactive.

The hours counter underneath the hours decoder. Originally I used a relatively simple counter which used a minecart track, but I soon got really frustrated because animals kept jumping on the track and in the cart, which would fuck up the count and it would take forever to fix it. It took a while to figure out, but I came up with this counter which uses pistons. Each time it receives a pulse, either one piston turns on, or if all of the pistons are on, all of them turn off. By receiving a pulse every hour, the counter cycles through 12 states every 12 hours, with each state corresponding to which number is displayed. It's much more reliable and much easier to reset if it does somehow screw up.

This has been a really fun project, and it makes me wish I'd gotten into digital circuitry sooner.

I tried some spice called Diablo tonight. It was hellish. It wasn't at all like weed, and turned out to be a pretty powerful hallucinogen. Me and 2 friends each took one hit of it, and all 3 of us had pretty horrible trips.

Basically, the 3 of us loaded a bowl, we each took one hit, and then we all started feeling the effects. To me it felt like the front of me was really heavy, so I sat down on the floor in front of my laptop. I pulled up a couple of websites, then I started feeling pretty bad, so I did what I always do when a drug starts to make me feel uncomfortable: Opened up foobar. I didn't feel like going through my music library, so I just played whatever I'd left there last time, which ended up being this.

From here out was a blur. I ended up laying on the ground in a fetal position with my eyes closed. I remember at one point I could hear a bunch of voices that I knew were external; it was my friends talking. But in my head these were disembodied voices floating around (really the best way I can describe it; I don't even know how many dimensions my closed-eye visuals had). I couldn't make sense of the language, and I couldn't stand the voices, but all I could do was yell "Go away! Go away!" until my friends stopped talking.

Then it gradually got worse, but I could still hear the music. When I listened, I remembered: I'm in a room. I'm laying on a carpet. I'm in front of my laptop. There are 2 other people here. I took a drug. Time is still working. This will end. And really, that thought was all that kept me from completely losing it. Of course, being aware of the outside world really just meant that I was stuck in this trip by myself, and no one else could do anything to make it better.

I can't even describe what the trip was like from here, just that it was extremely unpleasant. The visuals were complex and frightening. I felt a bunch of totally alien emotions which were all very horrible. I kept sinking down, lower and lower, until I finally started to realize that the effects were weakening and I was regaining control of my mind. In my head I was at war. After some fighting, I managed to open my eyes and sit up. Ten minutes had passed since I started the song. It felt like at least an hour.

I was really thirsty, so I got a cup and filled it with water. I took a sip and sat down on the couch. 30 seconds later I ran to the bathroom and puked until there was nothing left, and then some. The whole time I was puking I was yelling stuff like "WHY THE FUCK DO WE DO THIS?" and "WHY COULDN'T WE HAVE JUST WATCHED A MOVIE OR SOMETHING?"

One of my friends made tea, and when I got out of the bathroom I waited for my stomach to settle down and then I drank some. The hot liquid felt great, and a few minutes later (about 30 minutes after I'd smoked in the first place), I felt totally sober. No afterglow, no headache, no speech impediment, no weird prickly feeling; just as sober as I'd felt before we smoked.

So I threw out the rest of that spice, we all went to a nearby convenience store to pick up a couple of frozen pizzas, and then we ate and went on with our night as we would've had we stayed sober.

So I will say there are a few relatively good things about Diablo: It lets you remember where you are and what has happened, it doesn't last very long, and it lets you have your night back after it's done fucking your brain.

Seriously, fuck that shit. Last time I try any kind of drug before getting an idea of what to expect. That was a stupid move on all of our parts, and we all know it, so that's not going to happen again.

I have mine go off every 3 minutes for an hour when I want to wake up, and I keep it across the room. I don't sleep through it, and I don't half-consciously turn it off either.

I am rather drunk right now, and I just want to say I've made out with more guys than girls this week. But I'm pretty confident I sit at a 1 on the Kinsey scale now.

This.

The anti-vaccine movement has always pissed me off because it spreads misinformation that prevents children from receiving adequate medical care, but now the movement's negative impact on disease control is starting to show. Way to fucking go.

Also, I went to a rave over the weekend. Didn't do any drugs while there, but now I'm learning how to shuffle because it looks really really fun.

My roommate has this tendency to cook eggs for breakfast some mornings and then leave all of his dirty dishes in the kitchen sink for days. Normally I don't really mind since I don't cook, but today I was trying to wash a plate and all of his crap was in the way, which is really annoying since the sink doesn't have a detachable head. So I went and asked him if he could clean those dishes.

Me: "Hey, you think you could clean those dishes you left in the kitchen sink? They're kind of in the way."
Him: "Why haven't you vacuumed the living room yet?"
Me: "...Because it doesn't need vacuuming? This isn't about chores. This is you leaving your dishes in the sink and making it unusable."
Him: "It's just that if you want me to clean up, you should do your part too."
Me: "Fine, whatever."

Just 3 more weeks before I move out...

Ew, yeah. If they're going to make it more abstract, they could at least use better color contrast.

EDIT: The Chrome update keeps the older version of Chrome, so it wasn't too hard to replace the icon sets.

Whoo, birthday today. Finally I'm 21. Of course, I have an exam tomorrow, so looks like a bar crawl is out of the question tonight...

I'm about halfway through chapter 8 in Portal 2. It's been a good 6 hours.
