Title: games you look forward to in 2008 and beyond
Post by: vladgd on February 08, 2008, 01:28:22 PM
we need more jibajaba in this forum, so this topic should grant some responses.  just list some of the games you look forward to this year.  maby a reason as to why you look forward to them.

-gta4 (gta 3 = awesome, vice city = best gta game ever, san andreas = i got 40 hours of gameplay out of the first zone, id be damned if i somehow manage to not like gta4)
-soul calibur 4 (tits and bloom, ohh yeah!)
-banjo kazooie 3 (that is, if rare pumps it out this year, it is tba 08 however)
-mgs4 (i don't own a ps3, but goddamnit, i will find one and play this game)
-street fighter 4 (IF it comes out this year, not much of a street fighter fan, but its looking sharp)
-crystal chronicles: rof (if the local multiplayer is good, and my friends get the game, id be retarded not to get in on that sweet co op action)

looks like my 360 is going to red ring sooner than i thought, with all of these games coming out and all.  and oddly, that is a good thing, sooner it red rings, sooner i get a new quiet 360(friend had his 360 rrod, sent it in, the new box has a quiet dvd drive), and what better way to ruin a console by just playing it like it was made to do.

*edit* how can i forget

-WoW: WLK (hit 80, then i shall ppppppeeeerrrrmmmaaaaaquiiitttt WoW)
-STARCRAFT 2 (if they crank it out this year, i don't play non blizzard rts games, and i have every blizzard game/expansion from starcraft to WoW: tbc)

also, recently seems to be the time to release the 4th(not in contra's case, but its still a 4) game of something

call of duty 4
devil may cry 4
mgs4
street fighter 4
soul calibur 4
contra 4
grand theft auto 4
final fantasy 4 (ds port, already out in moonland)

just something interesting ive observed

Same deal, sept I really don't care for GTA or SC. Also SMASH, DMC4, NG2, CoD4 (still haven't set up my new PC, plus my C:SS clan is shifting over to this game), NMH, Left 4 Dead, and if I'm lucky Duke Nukem Forever will be released. They said they had 08 as the target year, but it might slip into 09. Also I still haven't boughten all of the 07 gaems I want.

Actually GTA 4 seems to have put some more emphasis on shootan and fightan, which definitely interests me now.

Street Fighter 4

Duke Nukem Forever.

...WHY IS EVERYONE LOOKING AT ME LIKE THAT?!

But seriously, DNF (assuming it gets released this year, which probably won't happen), GTA4, and R6:V2 are probably at the top of my list at the moment now.

Looking forward to Bionic Commando. Not much more I guess yet....

but what i'd like to see in some new games would be :

A new Portal game. (Much longer than the first)
An awesome 3D re-vamped version of Ecco the Dolphin (That'd be INSANE AWESOME)
I'll think of more when i'm not in the middle of a call at work.

They've done A 3D Echo game, wasn't all that awesome as the 2D ones. Also most poeple would see a dolphin game and think "lol gay".

I LOVED the Ecco games, and had NO IDEA there was one out for ps2.
They don't have it for xbox though do they :(

Uhh my 3 games i'm looking forward to are Spore, DDR Supernova 2 JP, and IIDX Gold.

I'd add Gran Turismo 5 but I don't have a PS3 and that game is vaporware anyways.

-Starcraft II because I still play the origional.  It could be either good or ridiculiously bad.  Then again, that's what they said about Warcraft III but look at that shiny piece of sexy go.

My favorite rumors:
-Diablo III just as long as it doesn't take months to get your character up to level like it does in WoW.

-Knights of the Old Republic MMO because nothing says "I'm proud to dedicate my life on this game" like a sith wookie with a light saber.

im going to reply to this

first rumor, blizzard has stated they will revisit the diablo franchise.  being as they made starcraft 2 an rts, i doubt they will ruin diablo by making it an mmo.  also, i can say with confidence, after "diablo 3" comes out in the far future, i can expect we will see warcraft 4, an rts.

second rumor, i can just destroy that with this link.

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3166223

"When the BioWare/LucasArts announcement hit, we speculated that the game in question was a new Star Wars MMO, but the new product list at least seems to disprove this, with the KOTOR game and MMO listed separately."

im not anti mmo(that may not be suprising with the wow stuff and all, but honestly, i could care less for the genre), but i hate it when game devs ruin series by changing the genre.  the way sega ruined the shining force series is a good example.  thankfully, we have sights of a good kotor sequel in the future.

add fable 2 to the list

http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/rpg/fable2/news.html?sid=6186341&autoplay=6186379&tag=topslot;link;5&om_act=convert&om_clk=topslot

im fucking sold, i can't deny that that is one of the most awesome things i have ever seen in a game.

anywhere in the game, a friend can jump in with HIS OWN FABLE 2 CHARACTER, and you can play the game co-op, and when he leaves, he retains all he gained from the play session.

my god

*edit*  the list keeps getting bigger and bigger

im no bionic commando fan, but both bionic commando games coming out look spectacular.  im definatley looking forward to playing them.

I'd like a Jade Empire 2, it's still just an idea I believe. Something they 'want to do'. I really enjoyed the first one.. KOTOR I and II are both on my list of favorite games, and I'd love a kotor III. An mmo would be fun, but I'm afraid it may be eventually nerfed and 'updated' to the point where people leave. But hey, maybe they learned a lesson from SWG.

Seriously, I checked the stats because I'm playing wow now, with over 9million plus active accounts, and SWG, at most (on the server I played on) had 700 people.  that's only one server.. So here's hoping they don't screw it up too bad.

Also: I totally forgot about GTA4. That should be pretty cool.

Looks fun, and rather confusing. What exactly initiates these instant decapitations and little cut scenes? Also is their a slight lock on (start swinging near an enemy and you'll face him) or do you have to quickly face the enemy and swing? Also also from what I've played of the xbox one, this is the only game to really do gun combat in a third person hack n slash right (lol devil may cry 2 tank fighting and playing as a person with a gun and auto lock in Onimusha 3).
Title: Re: games you look forward to in 2008
Post by: Bobbias on March 19, 2008, 11:24:48 AM
3 million is only a 3rd, and most other MMORPGs will never get near 3 million, let alone 9. Though I'm surprised Lineage had that many people. I've never played the original. Lineage 2 is pretty good though.
Title: Re: games you look forward to in 2008
Post by: Ulti on March 19, 2008, 04:27:42 PM
Lineage 2 is great, considering how old it is now, it's got a lot of really cool features, but it's just poorly executed, if you ask me. The integrated MSN messenger is pretty much the coolest feature ever, for srs. I didn't think the original Lineage was particularly good, it's just that I think it was the first really well done MMO.
Title: Re: games you look forward to in 2008
Post by: Bobbias on March 20, 2008, 01:07:42 PM
I actually really enjoy Lineage 2. If I could find a server with some cool people, like I had when I played RageZone's server a couple years ago, I'd play it again. The integrated MSN messenger is amazing. I was honestly amazed when I found out about that.

But the game is pretty good. I think it's actually pretty well executed, compared to the million craptacular MMO's floating around now.

Wow, talk about transcoding issues :/

People should really learn something about the codec they're using before going and assuming it can automatically make things look good (I mean jesus, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize you can turn off the Divx logo.)

But either way, that looks pretty badass.

Slightly higher-quality video here: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/216501.html (http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/216501.html).  Given that the old video ended with a Flash movie player-esque pop-up for ScrewAttack videos (meaning it's most likely posted on GameTrailers or Revver), I'm guessing that this one is most likely the source for the screen capped YouTube video.

I wonder how many times that has been transcoded :/ Even the Divx logo is pretty messed up.. And that's even in the slightly higher quality version too...

the new wario game does LOOK good, but the subtitle being "shake it" hints at WAGGLE, which for me is a major turn off.  but if it turns out to be a solid platformer, good for them.

Well, it's for the Wii. the Wii actually makes use of the motion sensing capabilities of the Wiimote. In fact, that was sorta the point of giving it motion sensing capabilities in the first place.

Other then hitting the ground, there aren't any other movies that need it. Other then a few key parts, it looks like you won't really need to waggle constantly, like waggle to jump/attack.

Post by: Bobbias on July 09, 2008, 03:44:53 PM
Yeah, targeting throwing things, and directing canons, and that cart thing look to be more or less the only types of situation you need to use the motion sensing. Other that that, it's pretty much just a classic platformer.

Yeah, I like oldschool 2D games. I hope they make more actual 2D games for the new consoles. Just because the console CAN make awesome 3D graphics doesn't mean it has to.

well save for a small handfull of titles, indie gaming is pretty much the only place to go for new 2d games.  why do you think im looking forward to bionic commando rearmed so much?  you don't need to dumb down the graphics to have a fun 2d game, and based on looks, bionic commando rearmed is going to deliver.

anyway, wtb non waggle, 2.5d metroid on the ds, or even wii.

Really the talk abut people wanting it in HD and what not is awful.

Your average current-gen gamer is typically a fucking idiot who thinks that HD is capable of making bad games great.  That, or they're 12 years old and don't know what non-HD looks like.  Or, perhaps, both.

Either way, we need to start an initiative where we take away those fucktards' Xbox 360s and PS3s and give them an NES and/or SNES and a good collection of games for a month.  Someone needs to show them that games don't need budgets in the tens of millions of dollars to kick ass and take names.

The fact that Capcom is making MM9 a 2D platformer makes me crave it even more.  If it's even half as good as MM2 I'm going to fall in love with it.

Yes, I'm SO happy to see someone still making 2d platformers. And by somebody I mean a real full budget studio, not some amateur computer programmer.

It's awesome. Easily on par with Mario and Sonic as far as plat formers go, and I'm a pretty huge sonic fan.

Yeah, it's sad to think some kids will literally say "lol 2d gaming sux" when there are more succesful 2D games then 3D. The main thing I was talking about is 8-bit sprites in HD, like what the fuck?

Hell I prefer a 8-bit or 16-bit game over a new 3D game.  Old school games were actually challenging considerind that during that time the internet was just starting to become public.

I totally knew the HD gamers would piss and moan about MM9. It should've been WiiWare only. Those retards don't deserve it.

The deal with Mega Man is that they are typically fantastic action-platformers with near puzzle-like rooms and it gives immense satisfaction when you can say you beat MM2 with just the Buster.

WAR
puzzle quest galactrix
possibly WoW WLK

i know i want fallout 3, but if i take a liking to WAR i will most likely buy it after 2008, i mean, i can't have TWO really time consuming games going on at the same time.  plus its $60.00 i can put away for the pc.

but yeah, all i mentioned are off the top of my head the only games yet to come out but due this year that i will get.

and i guess ill rename this thread to stuff past 2008, because after downloading the bionic commando traier from the download in BCR, that game looks REALLY sexy.  the swing mechanic LOOKS like its done well, but its only after people start playing it that we see if its actually pulled off or not.

My interest drastically tapered off when they announced the werehog.  And this is coming from someone who actually likes Shadow the Hedgehog.

Sonic Team seriously needs to go back to the basics and fix what's really wrong with the games.  Adding new features to something that's fundamentally broken is a bad idea.

Bamp, because I'm a huge nerd, but this game sounds rather impressive. Apparently it's an MMO shooter called ABP.

http://gamevideos.1up.com/video/id/17691

Here's the character customization.

http://gamevideos.1up.com/video/id/17692

A small bit of in game video, with criminals fighting a cop.

http://gamevideos.1up.com/video/id/17693

and a car chase.

It does seem a bit GTA online, but it's supposedly an MMO that's all live combat and PVP based with a huge customization engine, which sounds good to me.

hopefully it'll be on PC.

Every time I see anything about MMOFPS I can't help but think about Planetside.  It makes me sad to think about how badly they screwed that game up after its release. :(

That said, neither Huxley or APB are going to be handled, in any way, by SOE, so I think we have a pretty good shot at getting a game that won't be butchered a month after release.

The last time I read about Huxley, it was that it probably wasn't going to come out or that it had some massive development problems.

APB gets plenty of press though. I've seen quite a few articles on it.

I cannot WAIT for Street Fighter 4 and Star Ocean 4. I'm getting one of the FightPads since I'll have it on 360 and it's totally like the Saturn Pad aka Greatest Fighting Pad Ever. It's USB too so I can use it with MAME and everything else. Super awesome. Star Ocean 4 just looks amazing. I think the super vivid colors really help the game stand out. And it's more sci-fi than any of the other entries.

I drooled. I'm just recently getting back into 2D fighters with Guilty Gear XX Accent Core (gotten to the point were I can easily get off overdrive attacks and some combos) and I've been loving it. Thing is none of my friends play fighters and playing a fighter online usually results in lag deciding the outcome of the match.

People really need to look at Wii games more. Seriously. There's no reason something like Muramasa should be as little known as it is.

Find Deadly Creatures, Muramasa, Arc Rise Fantasia, Fragile, Mad World, The Conduit, Tenchu, de Blob, House of the Dead: Overkill, Wario Land: Shake It (so good), Marble Saga: Kororinpa, Rune Factory: Frontier, Major Minor's Majestic March, Klonoa, Little King's Story, Boom Blox 2, and Let's Tap. The Wii's got a loooooot going this year. Like whoa.

If that's the case, I might actually start using mine again.  Woo! ;D

Really, though, it is hard to ignore all of the shovelware that came out for it.  It's certainly not a Wii-exclusive problem, but the Wii being uber-popular definitely made it a more serious issue on that platform.
Title: Re: games you look forward to in 2008 and beyond
Post by: Eggman on February 07, 2009, 03:22:11 PM
Yeah. I mean, even if the Wii weren't all that popular, I'd bet you'd see a lot of the same cheap games just because development costs are only a quarter for the Wii over the 360/PS3.

I didn't even list the new games Nintendo has coming this year (Sin & Punishment 2, Punch-Out!!, Pikmin 3, whatever else they announce) or WiiWare stuff like Pole's Big Adventure (oh god one of the powerups gives you a boner) or Bubble Bobble Wii (which is supposed to have 400 stages, be 4 player and have the entire original game in it) or the stuff that came out last year like the Art Style games or World of Goo. There were quite a few hidden gems that people rarely seem to talk about from 2008 too. A lot of people like to complain that the Wii has no games but almost none of those people have actually put any effort in trying anything for themselves or attempted to find anything outside of what reviews have told them to look for.
Title: Re: games you look forward to in 2008 and beyond
Post by: MortifiedocAlot on February 07, 2009, 04:09:53 PM
It's not that the Wii lacks games (it really did go through a rather long dry spot, but De Blob and Wario came out right in the middle of it, which reminds me to at least rent these along with FE) it's just that a lot of the AAA (whatever you want to call them) type games that get released exclusively or multiplat between the 360 and the PS3 never see anything on the Wii (Cod4, Dead space at first, Mirror's Edge, Fear, Gears of war, MGS4, Soul Caliber 4, Street fighter 4, etc) and of course their are a ton of fanboys that just hate the Wii for some odd reason.

Then again, I never understood the fanboy logic, MGS4 looks awesome to me and I still don't have any plans to own a PS3.

Definitely.

Another problem is that developers seem to have this need to use every single feature imaginable, whether it's appropriate or not.  The iPhone and iPod Touch has the same issue.  The development costs are extremely low, even lower than the Wii (literally, all you need is hardware, a system that can run Mac OS X, some C/C++ knowledge, and a little bit of money for the annual fee) and the hardware has many of the same gimmicks.  I was trying out a platformer earlier that basically had me rotating the phone over and over again to navigate through the level.  It's a good thing I wasn't out in public when I started playing, I would have looked like a complete moron.

Another problem is the Wii's hardware.  It's simply not as capable of a system as the PS3 or 360.  Rather than scaling things back appropriately, developers seem to either go overboard (i.e. cutting out core functionality) or they don't do enough (the game's framerate is uneven).  In that sense it's sort of like the PS3.  Many people got a bad impression of the PS3 due to the sheer number of rushed 360 ports.

The tight storage limits on the Wii also negatively impact games like Rock Band.  I haven't spent all that much money on Rock Band DLC and I could have already filled up the Wii's internal memory and an SD card with songs.

An actual match, and yeah it looks good. I wish SF4 took this direction with the graphics.

Oh yeah, and I'm somewhat bummed at what the did to RE5. From what I've seen it has a cover system, a health system where when you get near death you can crawl and you have to have a teammate revive you and a fucking ZOMBIES with GUNS. So it pretty much is Gears.

Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2 (April 21) - Good for those times when you just wanna kill mass amounts of mech, also takes all the emotional, political and other non-fighting stuff out of the various gundam stories leaving mechs destroying other mechs

Ghostbuster (June 16) - A continuation of the storyline followed in the original movies, with the original actors lending their voices. Don't know how it's gonna turn out, but it looks good

Also looks like there are a lot of good sandbox games coming out, but this one definitely peaked my interest.

I was in the beta for RF: Guerrilla and absolutely hated it. It was all multiplayer but it was completely broken. People would grab the weapon that could fire through walls and then get themselves stuck inside a wall of junk and just fire away and win. Or they'd grab the only sniper weapon and then fly up to the top of a cliff and you couldn't do anything about it.

If it's really changed a ton, it might be fun single player, but I'd never play it multiplayer at all.

Yeah, Ultimate Alliance kicked ass, and I'm hoping that Fusion kicks just as much, or more ass.

I was always sad because I got the Wii version of Ultimate Alliance for Christmas, which was awesome, except then no one would play it with me. But then everyone ended up with the 360 version and they played it online. Boooo.

Things should change with UA2 though as I can get the correct version this time.

Also, oh my god BlazBlue.

Almost constant barrages of attacks. That is DEFINITELY my kind of fighting game. Litchi is probably going to be my main. Or maybe Jin? Or anyone? Because all of them are awesome. Even the big giant guy can do cool combos.

No offense, but have you ever played GG? Really, it's definitely one of the more offensively geared fighting games.

I do like the idea of everyone in having some sort of special attack outside of their standard attacks (as in Jin being able to freeze opponents and that girl with the pole being able to toss it and use it separate of her). The only bad things are the horribly generic character design and the game balance looks a little off, Iron Tager just screams "PLEASE COMBO MY BIG DUMB FACE".

Trust me, I've played PLENTY of Guilty Gear, but upper level matches aren't THAT offensive. Most characters have some odd corner trap and otherwise a couple of setups. In fact, that video you just showed kind of proves my point. They just keep going for the same setups. BlazBlue is somewhat the same there, but it looks like everyone has many many many more options.

Honestly, I've played too much Guilty Gear. It's somewhat like KoF in that, I've played each version as it's come out and aside from damage changes, characters get maybe one new move or one slightly changed motion. It isn't enough to keep my interest anymore. Accent Core might be good, but I really just don't care about those characters at this point.

From what people tell me on BlazBlue, pretty much everyone is good at higher levels. The smaller cast allows for much better balance. Tager's the only one that I haven't seen too many videos of but even then, the few I have seen have him matching up just fine.

I don't see the designs as generic at all though. I just see an artist sticking to his style, which works really well because they're all awesome.

Well, it's more then likely going to take a while to figure out exactly how balanced the game is anyways. Also I do agree that Guilty Gear at high play doesn't look TOO fun, as in it has a lot of corner camping and DUSTLOOPS.

On another note, the sequel to Symphony of the Night?

FF XIII. Yeah... I'll be waiting a while, but I still want it.

Red Faction Guerrilla is gonna be out in about a week. The single player demo is pretty fun, so it should be okay. Hopefully its a decently long game.

Bioshock 2, Modern Warfare 2, Max Payne 3

lol, in order to do that, they would have to look at a chapter other than the Ultramarines. The Blood Raven Chapter would be a good one for that kind of idea. Also, they would have to focus on the internal struggles of the chapter.

As an aside though, most Space Marines are incredibly loyal to the station that they were given, those who weren't/aren't are usually converted to chaos or at the very least renegade chapters.

also, looking forward to that game, and hoping that they expand and make games based on more of the races (which would be incredibly awesome especially if they made a dark eldar game).

I'd love an Orkz based game. That or a Chaos based one so I can have a game with satanic characters killing supposed white knights.

I don't mean to bring up the dead, but did you see the samurai with long GRAY hair and an 11 FOOT SWORD (I got a better look at him, he's actually kind of cool looking...)? Or the gothic lolita? Or the two VERY shonen like douches? Or the chick that could make a DOA girl look normal. I mean, some of the designs are rather awesome (hell, they even have a fairly original catgirl in there, which is not fucking common) but there are a few that really irk me.

No More Heroes 2
Metroid Prime Trilogy
Muramasa
Monster Hunter 3
Metroid Other M
Mario Galaxy 2
New Zelda
TvC
Supposed pikmin 3 and I still need to check out MadWorld.

I'm glad I still have my Wii, oh and this game looks good, at least the little I've seen.

Add in:

A Boy and His Blob
Cursed Mountain
Little King's Story (which is out now and wtf awesome)
Dead Space Extraction
Spyborgs (Capcom's making a new beat'em up!)
maybe that new Silent Hill
Sky Crawlers
Sakura Wars
Fragile
Arc Rise Fantasia
FF Crystal Chronicles: Crystal Bearers

and the Wii has more stuff that I'd like to play than either of the other two in the next year.

My 360 list is:

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (oh my god they put in the AA-12 shotgun. Look up footage on youtube for videos of it in real life. so awesome)
Assassin's Creed 2
maybe Alpha Protocol
maybe Magna Carta 2 (the first one was pretty bad, but the totally moon language demo for 2 was fun so we'll see)
FF13 is a definite first day buy but who knows if it'll actually make release early next year?
maybe Tekken 6 but I already have SF4 and BlazBlue
Bayonetta
probably Bioshock 2 if they don't screw it up with co-op
Splinter Cell: Conviction
Mass Effect 2
Resonance of Fate
Alan Wake

Problem with the 360 list is that from FF13 on down, none of the release dates are even set at all. Most of them are totally TBA.

I thought you were going to say Hellgate London. Also yeah, nothing's been able to do the whole Diablo thing better then Diablo, hopefully this game will be like FO3 but with more diverse enemies, a better RPG system (FO3's really just felt tacked on, and most of the skills sucked) and some better guns.

I might rent Borderlands but the fact that they keep concentrating only on weapons weapons co-op co-op tells me there'll be very little story and that's pretty much the most important thing to me and I don't especially enjoy co-op all that much unless it's something short like Final Fight.

It's supposedly a mix between games like Doom, WoW, and Diablo, so I'm thinking that it'll probably have a deceptively barebones story that's elaborated on using quests.  That's only speculation, of course, so we'll see.

So long as it doesn't have any stupid, stupid, stupid copy protection I'll probably get it for PC when it comes out.  Then again, 2k is publishing it, and they're known to be complete fucking retards when it comes to DRM.

If they do go the DRM route, hopefully they'll at least release it on Steam and strip the DRM out of that edition like good little prostitutes.  I really don't want to get this for 360 because I really don't want to have to pay for the privilege of playing online.

Well, you can't aim with using two pistols at once and it takes the place of your main weapon and it takes up a perk slot I'm pretty sure so I don't think anyone's going to use it outside of going for challenges. The Semtex aren't really grenades. They're just sticky bombs and sticking them to people isn't exactly what you normally do. They're also bright orange so using them in ambushes won't be as easy as using C4. I believe they also have a similar throwing arc to C4, which means it's tiny and very hard to actually tag people with unless you get very close and they will probably kill you for that.

Final Fantasy XIII was originally started using Unreal Engine 3. Eventually it was found that that wasn't going to work because UE3 is ass to work with on PS3. Thus, Square completely scrapped what they had and restarted, starting with a completely original dev tool called Crystal Tools. Thus, what we know of FFXIII came to be. And yeah, Japan gets it at the end of the year and we get it Spring 2010. I'm purposefully blacking out all information I get on the game from here on out because I want to try to recapture what I loved about Final Fantasy to begin with. I want the whole game to be fresh and exciting and I don't even want to know how to get skills in the game until I see an in-game tutorial or something while I'm playing it.

FFXIV is using a much-updated FFXI engine and is actually really different. No leveling, stats based on equipment (so like Monster Hunter here), you can switch jobs on the fly, all sorts of other stuff. Someone's just trying to make a poor joke with the wikipedia thing. I don't really ever play MMOs of any kind so I don't really care about it too much, but I like the changes.

Good to hear, but still, for a game supposedly aiming for realism (I know it's not, shut up) it seems completely out of place. I'd like to see more crazy shit then other then just that. Plus it just strikes a nerve knowing that some kids think using two desert eagle.

That and I've topped my team using mostly C4 on a domination map. It's a much more viable weapon when you realize you can cook it without risk, detonate it quickly, and it has a bigger blast radius then grenades.

for the record, i am NOT into racing games.  i like my "arcadey" stuff like you know, the kart stuff, star wars ep 1 podracer, f-zero, that stuff.  but like "simmy" racers, nah.  really the only "sim" racer ive played was sega gt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_GT_2002) because i mean, it was free.  my xbox came with the "JSRF/SEGAGT" in one disc thing.

i mean, it was ok, but i don't know.  then i tried the demo for forza 2, GOD DAMN WAY TO TELL ME I SUCK AT RACAN GAMES, GAME.  it basically kicked my ass and spat on my corpse, not sure if the full game is a bit more forgiving but i don't know.

but ive just been in this mood of "man i REALLY want to get into "insert game here"" (IM LOOKING AT YOU EVE) and well, sim racers (namly forza) fall under this.

all of this is because of...

http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-need-for-speed-shift/17-1351/

need for speed shift, looks fun...but for some reason that got my excited to try out forza 3.

yeah, spectere, im going to need some input since i know you make sweet lovins to forza 2.  but when forza 3 comes out i may have to do what i generally never do, is rent it and give er a go, since a demo can only go so far.  problem, late october release, and i need a vidya to play now.

back to the "BITCH BITCH I NEED A VIDYA I WANT TO PLAY BITCH BITCH"  ohh well.  i don't feel like spending money on a new console (i mean i just dropped $200 on a new 360....) so im stuck with mah tree sigsty and pretty boss pc.  lots of stuff to play, but it's all a matter of what i feel like playing, which unfortunately is very little of what's out (obviously, else id have found said game and be typing about it in the other thread.)

Double post for double stuff.

Frank West gameplay in TvC. From what I've seen of Viewtiful Joe he kind of sucks, but I hear Zero is also going to be in it which gives me wood.

http://borderlands.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Classes

Class trees for Borderlands. Probably going to do a Roland with a medical specialization. I'm wondering if you unlock higher spots on the tree with just leveling, because then I could just jump from tree to tree considering a few of the medical stuff seems useless.

Moving this to the thread it belongs in.

i mean, it was ok, but i don't know.  then i tried the demo for forza 2, GOD DAMN WAY TO TELL ME I SUCK AT RACAN GAMES, GAME.  it basically kicked my ass and spat on my corpse, not sure if the full game is a bit more forgiving but i don't know.

I've found Forza 2 (the full thing) to be pretty forgiving.  I don't know exactly what the demo offers (I bought Forza 2 mainly because Forza 1 was, in my not-so-humble opinion, the best racing game for the original Xbox) but the full version essentially lets you pick which assists you want to use.  Traction control, stability management, anti-lock brakes, suggested line, AI difficulty, computer-controlled shifting, and which damage model to use.  The tradeoff is that the more assists you use, the less money you get at the end of the race.  Similarly, the more difficult you make it, the more you get.  You can get anything from 50% to 150% (IIRC) of the normal earnings depending on what you pick.

Even despite that, it's still a sim racer and has a realistic physics engine.  Aside from the AI difficulty, damage settings, and suggested racing line display, the game doesn't do a whole lot of hand-holding.  I'd suggest renting the game or buying it (Forza 2 is a budget title now, $20 new).

yeah, spectere, im going to need some input since i know you make sweet lovins to forza 2.

Sweet lovins?  I fucking married Forza 2.  We'll see how good her little sister is when she ends up on the store shelves.

Let's just say that my Forza 2 disc was used so much that the shitty DVD-ROM drive on the Xbox 360 scratched the piss out of it*.  If I don't install it to the hard drive the game has a nasty tendency to stop reading the discs and crash on certain courses.  Fun.

*Before anyone says anything, my Xbox 360 never moves while in use.  It's always horizontal, always on a shelf, never touched.  I also take damn good care of my games.  I have CDs from 1992 that I used heavily that still work perfectly.  I have no idea why the DVD drive on the Xbox 360 is so freaking awful, but it kind of pisses me off.

taking pristine care of the 360 does not prevent a RROD, it only slightly prolongs when you will get a RROD.  as for the scratching issues, i think it's "hey, get lucky your 360's dvd drive doesn't suck" since ive had a friend's 360 scratch up both his halo 3 AND his crackdown games.  i don't let people borrow 360 games for a reason...

anywho, i think ill just wait to rent forza 3, aion is my current timesink at the moment.

Post by: Spectere on September 27, 2009, 06:18:31 PM
Heh, I don't think taking care of a 360 will even prolong an RRoD.  Since most of what causes the RRoD is internal heat, even placing the thing in a cold room won't really do anything.  In fact, it might cause more problems due to the temperature difference.

I don't know if the DVD drive was swapped out when my old system RRoD'd, but the drive that's in there seems to be a bit better about not destroying my games.  Even so, I have yet to play a 360 game as long as I've played Forza 2, so who knows.

I really regret sinking as much as I did into DLC, especially for games like Rock Band 2, because I just know that I'm probably not going to have a working 360 in a few years.  Sadly, out of all three current gen systems, I have a feeling that my least favorite of the bunch (by far) -- the Wii -- is going to live the longest.  It's kind of upsetting, really.

Placing it in a cold room might help prolong things a bit, since the colder the ambient temperature is, the longer it takes to reach high heats, but I think the only way to really avoid the RROD would be to implement some hardcore aftermarket cooling.

*Hardcore = NOT an Intec cooler/any cooler that snaps onto the back VIA the power supply input. This fried my friend's 360 to the point where when we tried to take it off, pliers had to be used, because it melted the plastic surrounding the housing, practically welding the cooler to the 360.  Needless to say he had to buy another 360.

There is no way to simply avoid the RRoD.  The issue is effectively caused by solder joints breaking.  Circulating air through the system might help, but it certainly won't prevent it.  The RRoD is caused by a major design flaw in the system; nothing is going to flat-out prevent it from happening.

I also learned that the GPU is apparently right under the drive.  That might explain some of the weird DVD drive issues that the system has.

The problem is that the system was rushed to the market, and now everyone -- both Microsoft and the end users -- are paying for it in the end.  It's a terrible situation that probably won't ever get fully resolved in the system's lifetime.

And, as Sneaky mentioned, coolers that sap power from the AC adapter are bad juju.  Really, I don't even see how ones that clip onto the back help much.  There are already a couple of exaust fans back there...seems to me like adding another one wouldn't significantly increase air flow.

Well, I read up about it on wikipedia, and they weren't clear on what the exact problem was (because apparently nobody can quite agree what it is). I wouldn't be surprised if it was the solder joints, at which point yeah, it's unavoidable.

If it weren't for the CPU and GPU using ball grid solder, it would be possible to fix the solder yourself (mind you, you'd void your warranty a couple times over to do so)

Supposedly we're also getting Dudley, Makoto, Ibuki, Cody, Adon, and Guy as well.

And the mechanics are being switched around. New moves, rebalancing, new music, stages, 2 Ultras for everyone, some air supers/ultras, some new focus type thing that hasn't been explained to me yet.

And it's not going to be full price. Probably $30-40.

pretty sure what is confirmed is

juri
hawk
dee jay
hakan (an arab grappler, that totally tickles my fancy)

but that's cool for me, juri is awesome, we know dee jay and hawk are awesome, and arab grappler man sounds awesome.

as for the other rumored characters, cool for the people who want em, but, im not interested.  i mean, id probably want birdie, Q, and that's it really, ingrid because she's hot, but that's a bad reason to want a character in a game.

but the leaks have been kind of accurate so far.  YOU CANT HAVE ENOUGH GRAPPLERS, EVER!

*edit*

speaking of MORE GRAPPLERS

HUGO.  and i don't know alpha, but isn't r mika a grappler?  even if not, she is a gief fangirl, and, look at her, she needs to be translated into the sf4 engine.

El Fuerte works like a faster version of R. Mika for the most part. He's just missing some command throws. I'd still take Mika's design over his any day though. Birdie's probably too close to Balrog in fighting style since he's actually more charge/dash type of guy than a real grappler.

Hugo would be a loooot of fun though. I use him quite a bit in 3S since I'm awful at parrying but great at catching people in that bounce off the wall into the air throw.

It just feels like Bioware's trying too had to make a giant team of badasses. There's no one to round out the team. And I'm not sure why they have both the new Krogan and Subject Zero when they clearly both have assault and biotics going. Just Subject Zero would have been better. Her sexual assault thing scene in the trailer just reeks of going for shock value/"maturity" though. Their ads for Dragon Age have been really bad too. Marilyn Manson songs, comical amounts of blood, promises of "freaky sex." It's almost annoying.

the dragon age adds have been horrible.  it's like they are trying to make me NOT want that game.

as for mass effect 2, looks like there's going to be 10 party members this time around, so yeah.  pretty much what they have been showing seem to be good allies for the "renegade" shepherd.  presumably to emphasize the "dark" second chapter in the trilogy as they have been pretty adamant on doing.  not a big fan of that, but ohh well, the chances i will get sucked into this game if it's anywhere near the quality of the first one is pretty high, so im not worried.

looking pretty ok thus far.  it doesn't matter what i say about it though, im buying it.  it can't be as bad as ff12, i mean, that's an impossibility.

from the "footage" i can see that snow is ok, black man with weird name that i forgot is pretty awesome, lightning is kind of lame, and i could care less about weird red headed chick.

also depending on how much "better" the ps3 version, i think im retarded enough to buy a ps3 to play this.  seriously, ive been waiting since ff9 for an awesome ff game, and i really hope this is the one.  i want a ps3 anyway.

i mean 10 was ok, i didn't really like it past the calm lands, but i got past it.  also yunalesca is probably one of the best ff boss fights ever, hard as balls(for me anyway), but it's so unique it's hard to hate.  x-2 keeps losing my interest, and everything about the game but the combat is kind of....beyond bad.  and 12 is just bland, nothing about it really sticks out to me.  it's my opinion, they aren't bad, but i just can't seem to play them without stopping.

The PS3/360 versions are said to be near identical. Both are only getting the english voice track because of they're lip syncing the characters' mouths to the english track. The only real difference is that the PS3 version is obviously on one disc while the 360 version will be on 3 or 4. Disc changing's a pretty small difference though.

Thankfully, it does look like Final Fantasy's going back into being much more character-driven compared to 12's plot wherein the characters are affected by things but don't do much to affect anything themselves. It looks like there's a great cast of characters with no one being a total freak and Hope, the teenage boy, sounds exactly like he should and with some fire to him.

Well, if we get lucky someone will release undubs for those of us who wish to spare themselves the sub-par english voice acting (still better than most, but as far as I'm concerned, 99% of english dubbing is sub-par anyway).
Title: Re: games you look forward to in 2008 and beyond

I don't think any of what's been shown has been subpar. The beginning of that trailer's a bit iffy but I think it's more because they haven't equalized the sound or finished the lip sync. And FF12 had some of the best voice acting...probably ever. 13 looks like it carry right along with that. Sazh (black dude) definitely has the best-delivered line of the trailer.

I'd honestly just rather see the correct lip sync with them speaking english.

And doing an undub of the game will be next to impossible. I have absolutely no idea how a hacked PS3 even works or what entails them putting subtitles and putting the english translation in. It definitely wouldn't match up though. The game's also being re-written to flow better in english than the normally overly-wordy japanese.

you know, it's ironic coming from me, but an rpg needs a little more than cool combat to get me through it.  it doesn't have to be story, but i mean, what i am doing in the world has to be somewhat interesting.  killer7 for example, story is just "what the fuck i don't even know whats going on" and the gameplay is mediocre.  but the game is just so goddamn crazy you can't help but want to go on further and see just what's around the next corner.  i mean mask de smith getting shot in the head...AND HEADBUTTING THE FUCKING BULLET, that's just like, yeah, buy killer7.

then again, i beat 5.  i didn't really give a hell what was going on, and the gameplay was the standard turn based stuff, but for some reason, it kept me interested enough to finish it.  so really i don't know, and i can't quite say why i keep putting down 12 other than it's not that interesting to me.

as for 13, the lip syncing in the video looked pretty solid.

Overly wordy? Considering the fact that the Japanese language is capable of a grammatically correct sentence without having any actual sentence subject, I'd like to think of Japanese as being relatively compact, in some sense. I will admit that there are generally more syllables in a given sentence in japanese, rather than english, but calling Japanese overly-wordy is a bit of a stretch. Actually, it's a bit difficult to compare english and japanese, because they are so different. You also have to consider whether a particle should be considered a word or not.... But I'm getting a bit off topic from what I wanted to say...

I hate English voice acting, except when REAL ACTORS do it. Hence why one of the only anime dubs I've endured and didn't hate was princess mononoke.

I REALLY wish they would allow for Japanese audio and English text in more games......

Honestly, I'm as much in the dark as you are about how a hacked PS3 works, but I do know a bit about how un-dubs work. most of the time, instead of modifying the animation at all, they simply use what's there and try to fit English to the mouthing of the Japanese video. In an un-dub, the rip the Japanese audio, and replace the English audio with the original, while leaving the rest of the game untouched.

As a side note, my FFXII CD is an un-dub, lol.

But I will say that the voice acting has definitely improved over previous stuff.

as for 13, the lip syncing in the video looked pretty solid.

I hope you didn't think I was talking about the syncing specifically in my post. I just hate most English voice acting because 99% of it sounds incredibly fake and forced to me. (though not being a native speaker of Japanese, it maybe the Japanese sounds just as fake and forced to them as the English sounds to me. the difference being that to me, the Japanese sounds more natural than the English does, so I prefer mine in Japanese.)

killer7 for example, story is just "what the fuck i don't even know whats going on" and the gameplay is mediocre.  but the game is just so goddamn crazy you can't help but want to go on further and see just what's around the next corner.  i mean mask de smith getting shot in the head...AND HEADBUTTING THE FUCKING BULLET, that's just like, yeah, buy killer7.

I haven't played Killer 7, and have only seen a bit of gameplay, but man, I think calling the gameplay mediocre is a bit of an understatement. From what I've seen, it's downright horrible. My GF's roommate bought it recently, and I've seen him playing for a couple minutes, and the gameplay looks absolutely horrible.
Title: Re: games you look forward to in 2008 and beyond
Post by: Eggman on October 04, 2009, 03:34:26 AM
Killer7's not that bad to play. It's a lightgun game mixed with an adventure game basically. It has what I'd say would be the logical next step for lightgun games, although no one ever paid attention to it. I thought I hated it at first, but then I went back to it and decided it was awesome.

But yeah, Japanese is totally overwordy. When you have a sentence that ends up being some speech about magic and rainbows and some philosophical thing, it gets a bit annoying. Not to mention they repeat each other all the goddamn time. Things could be toned down and reworked to have much more functional meaning. Japanese relies way too much on odd metaphors that don't translate to any other language and because of that, don't need to exist if that language won't be used. Japanese is definitely extreeeeeemely hokey though. The VA's for Japanese games might be beloved icons but great actors they are not. I'll take Snow's VA (who also voiced Yuri in Tales of Vesperia) any day.

Funny note, the voices of Wakka and Kimahri in FFX are done by the voice of Bender from Futurama. He was also Migelo and Gilgamesh in FF12.

Killer 7 needed faster enemies, more enemies and better puzzles. Everything was just so easy, which made me feel kinda meh about it. Still entertaining tho.

Also I liked FF12's story. None of this forced romance stuff, none of this "YOU HAVE TO SAVE THE WORLD" stuff, but the gameplay just felt off. I liked the way it was going, but the Mist system was horrible.

you have to sympathize me when i don't think it's "fair" when one single high templar can kill two control groups of my zerg units with the click of a button unless i am gosu enough to micro around it.  am i saying it's broken at pro level?  no, i see plenty of zergs walk over toss.  do i think it's broken at novice level?  hell yea i do.

don't go saying "but zerg units are cheap" because im sure 24 hydras with the speed upgrade cost way more than one high templar with psy storm upgraded.  and im pretty sure it's easier to replenish say...two or three high templar (basically you can kill anything with this) than two control groups of hydras.

though newf is alright at the game, i wouldn't mind seeing his opinion on the matter.  i know i suck at the game, but even playing against irl friends who also suck at the game, toss just seems too damn powerful at our level of play.

I will admit that it is broken at lower levels, but I rarely use templars.. then again, that could be part of my problem, lol. I've never been good at using psi-storm. You should note that templars are pretty much unable to defend themselves if you do get past the storm though.

this comes out like tomorrow.  i will not be buying it tomorrow since i just got borderlands, and i need to play the bejesus out of that.

BUT, after im done with borderlands, this fucker is mine.

a diablo like game for those who enjoyed diablo, with a nice cheap $20.00 pricetag.

*edit*

goddamnit giantbomb.  second fucking time i watch a quicklook.  several seconds after watching said quicklook, i preorder the game.  $18.00 for preordering a game i planned on buying anyway, saved me two bucks anyway.

Forza 3 comes out todayyyyyyy~!

Figures that both it and Borderlands (which I bought today and am almost done downloading) came out on the same week.  Now I'm going to be torn on which one to actually play the shit out of.

This has literally been the only WW2 game I look forward too.

I love the whole setting of being a citizen under nazi rule, plus the gameplay looks like Uncharted mashed with Hitman.

new super mario bros wii (what a fucking stupid name)

it's like ive wanted a "new, 2d, console mario game" since the snes days, and they finally do it.

im going to try and get ahold of a wii and this game one way or another, i have to play this.  i mean if you don't count tomba! 2, super mario world is my favorite platformer, and this game looks like that, only "new".

now that i think of it, i never played "new super mario bros" on the ds...going to have to borrow that from my sister and give it a play.

Title: Re: games you look forward to in 2008 and beyond
Post by: Eggman on November 26, 2009, 06:28:14 AM
Adon is nothing like Sagat. Absolutely nothing like him. The closest they get is both having a form of tiger knee. He's honestly very hard to explain. A very offensive Vega I guess? But even there, the only similar move he has is the leap to the wall, kick across the screen. They're giving him the ability to do a j. kick into jaguar kick though (he does this in the video with the kick to big circular kick) so that's a huge plus for him. If he stays as he was from Alpha, he'll have strong normals with a lot of range on his kicks so he'll fit right in the poking crowd and with great anti-air from his jaguar knee and hopefully jaguar kick still normally goes over fireballs because it used to.

He should be a beast. They all should be. I'm really really hoping they all turn out way stronger than the normal SF4 console characters.

And they should redo Cammy. Make it so hooligan can throw people out of crouching like it used to and give her cannon strike out of hooligan back. That's really all she needs. It's way too easy for Balrog to just block in a corner because Cammy's only option LITERALLY her only option is to try to lure him into screwing up because every move she can do is too punishable by him. You can't even jump in and hope for mixup because oops buffalo headbutt beats everything.

Shattered Horizon looks pretty cool, and it's gotten good reviews thus far, and it looks super snazzy, but I don't really think I have the hardware to run it that well. I might pick it up at some point since it's fairly cheap and I'm super gay for anything sci-fi.

biotics...not sucking?

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/adept-combat-mass-effect/59489

i may actually use them this time around...until they announce what the soldier gets making him so stupidly durable it doesn't matter.  anywho, certain weapons have ammo in this game so i would think some kind of "ammo regeneration" would kind of fit the soldier.  just estimating from what little i know of the game.
Title: Re: games you look forward to in 2008 and beyond
Post by: Eggman on November 28, 2009, 04:44:41 PM
Yeah, if the Soldier doesn't get some form of massive health (shouldn't really matter since you shouldn't be getting hit that much anyway...) or ammo conservation or something, it's going to end up completely useless just because the Adept can equip everything.
Title: Re: games you look forward to in 2008 and beyond
Post by: vladgd on November 28, 2009, 11:04:10 PM
(shouldn't really matter since you shouldn't be getting hit that much anyway...)

says who, my soldier can take rockets to the face like a champ thanks to master immunity with improved immunity and stupidly high health regeneration.  it's broken in my opinion since immunity protects you from like 80% of all damage and with improved immunity there's a three second window where you don't have immunity up, you literally don't take damage because the 20% damage you take is mitigated by health regeneration, this health regeneration not even from armor mods which i don't use because i don't need them.

but im not worried, the vanguard/adept got some new toys, so it's safe to assume everybody is going to get something cool.  if anything, im worried about what they are going to do with the tech abilities, since they were kind of weak in the first game save for opening crates and whatnot.  i mean, if you choose to be an engineer, you are essentially the weakest class in my opinion.

but yeah, it looks like they revamped the combat a good deal.  i mean there seems to be only 4 ranks of each skill from the adept video i linked, so who knows what else is under the hood.

*edit*

"Engineers and allies who are "heavy tech power specialists" will now be able to use drones in combat. These drones will attack enemies that the controller selects and then auto-select their next targets. Their intended role is "to distract, suppress, and lock down enemies."

Shifting interest more towards No More Heroes 2. Sucks being poor, anyone playing No More Heroes 2, TvC, Mass Effect 2 vlad or Muramasa. I suppose I should finish Stalker CS, Viewtiful Joe 2, Megaman Zero 3, Megaman 3, and Serious Sam HD. Shit, my gaming ADD is horrible, I have probably 5 or 6 other games I've yet to even install.

No More Heroes 2 is absolutely amazing. Muramasa was also excellent and very beautiful. I'll be trying out TvC tomorrow with a bunch of friends and Mass Effect 2 shows up from GameFly tomorrow.

Honestly though, both NMH2 and TvC need every purchase they can get. Mass Effect 2 will go platinum hits and drop in price later just like the first one did.

that's been all over the interwebs, nothing exciting.  announce hakan already, you know, a NEW character.  though i guess if i were to have an sf3 character, Q goddamnit, who cares about anybody else (save for maby oro...or twelve...)

also, mount and blade warband in march, HOT.

i bought mount and blade a little while ago waiting for this sonbitch, multiplayer medieval fightan!  fuckin' castle seige gametype sounds like it's going to be the shit.

heres some gameplay

*edit*

played some warband beta, pretty fun.  archers are a pain in the ass, but like, hitting somebody with a bow isn't exactly easy, plus blocking arrows with a shield is easy.  i think the easiest thing to get kills is, well, get a lance, get a horse...run into people with said lance...

though on tighter maps, like the village map, that might just be retarded.

i would rather nintendo pool money into making a new handheld over remaking the same thing over and over again, at least it's something different, unlike what sony has been doing with the psp for the most part.

i don't want it, but...fuck, dat screen...

i would probably blow my money on it too to play pokemon, but pokemon comes out like 14 days earlier....until i read about the clicky buttons that apparently the normal dsi has.  can anybody who has used a dsi explain?  the ds lite buttons frankly suck total ass, while say the gba sp have excellent buttons, how do the dsi buttons compare?

i may...actually...sell off my ds lite and get a dsi xl, play some pokeyman, maby catch up on older games like mario and luigi, ff4, maby even zelda.
Title: Re: games you look forward to in 2008 and beyond
Post by: Eggman on February 25, 2010, 03:30:31 AM
The DSi's buttons are more like the SP's. They're very nice.

I don't know that I'd bother with the XL though. Even on the DSi I can notice the odd bit of pixel stretching here and there. It'd be more pronounced on the XL due to the bigger screen size while keeping the same game resolution. But hey, if you usually use the thing at home anyway and that doesn't bother you, it'd probably be worth it.

Also, holy hell summer is owned by Nintendo. Monster Hunter Tri with free online in April, Mario Galaxy 2 in May, Sin & Punishment 2 June 7th, Metroid: Other M on June 27th, Picross 3D in there somewhere and Dragon Quest 9 at some point in the summer. So much for the usual summer gaming drought haha.

i may pick up a DSi XL then.  probably sell off my ds lite to a bro who could use one.  people are talking bad about the physical size of the unit, but that's a good thing in my opinion, doesn't bother me that i may have a hard time putting the thing in my pocket when i can just put it in my old gameboy "purse" thing.  i just want better buttons, maby i can start playing contra 4 again.

plus like, ff13 should keep me busy till later in the month, ill pick up a burgundy dsi xl and some pokeymans, should be ballin'.

Wow....Capcom is running out of ideas for characters....Even though its a unique concept for a character....Its absolutely retarded....I personally think hes going to suck. Hes basically like zangief, slow, close quarters, just with more retarded moves. Hakan is to Zangief, as Dan is to Ryu.
Title: Re: games you look forward to in 2008 and beyond
Post by: Eggman on March 10, 2010, 04:08:01 PM
From all reports, Hakan's actually pretty good. Easy to land Ultra, good damage, his slide goes under fireballs, you can play a fair guessing game with blockstrings and his dive throw and you can create good mixups using the various strengths of his normal command throw since placement is determined by button strength.

That's what you said about Tager, but really he looks like he's supposed to be the middle ground between Zangief and Abel as far as grapplers go. When I think about it most fighting games don't even have 3 grappling characters.

you just figure that out now...with a unique grappling character?  wut?

ryu
ken
akuma
dan
sagat
sakura

essentially the same fucking character.  also surprised you don't complain about bring back old characters, like you know, the entire cast of super street fighter II turbo being in the game.

but i digress, he's a love it or hate it character, and i dig the personality they gave him.  as for playing as him, well, we don't have access to playing the game right now, so who knows save for the videos out right now.  even with that, it doesn't blatantly let you know if you are going to enjoy said character or not, i was hype for sf4 gief because of maining sf2 gief, and i fucking hate using him.

even if you remove dan, that's still 5 of the same character.  (yeah they have their differences, but they are all the same)

also i guess i read they nerfed vega even more or something.  i guess he had a 2xqcf ultra and they made it back into a charge move or something.  basically i am hearing that dan is literally better than vega, which, sadly, i see more dan played in tournaments than i do vega.  though, sanford kelly is really damn good, im not sure if him picking dan counts as much.  plus i mean dan's lk air knee thing is pretty good.

Actually I'm pretty sure that's why SF3 didn't do so good. I mean, it's a great game, but most of the cast is new. Shame that everyone wants the old cast, even people who weren't really into SF2 (my friend like NEVER plays fighters and he liked the idea that SF4 was going to be more like 2...).

This game looks god damned awesome. I'm still on the fence about the whole "you swing slow as FUCK" combat, but it does seem to add to the thought of when and where you swing on a monster. I just hope there's enough big monster fighting to keep me hooked.

Also Bad Company 2 seems a bit goofy for me.

I'm a pretty big fan of Transformers but I've always been let down by games for the series.

Until now I think.

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/multiplayer-overview-transformers-war/65224

Campaign for both Autobot and Decepticon, co-op for campaign, massive attention paid to history and the sort of things that fans want, online multiplayer using classes based more on being useful to the team than a lone wolf and it just looks fantastic in general. Can't wait for it.

not even sure where to put this, but since it's an upcoming game, with already announced upcomming dlc.  here it is.  blazblue cs will have five new characters(though one of them is dlc, one of them IS nu from the previous game, and im not sure if the other one is YET ANOTHER nu clone or a new character), the typical "game balance, changing certain things about the engine bla bla bla" stuff a fighting update should have, and then this dlc character.  that damn squirrel girl if you played any of the story bits of the game.

"hey charlie, remember that school girl who was kind of a squirrel?"

"yeah bob, what were you thinking"

"well, we don't have enough time to put it on the disc, so i was thinking of making it dlc.  but we can't just have her in that schoolgirl outfit, what should her battle gear look like"

"we work for a japanese company making an anime centered game, STRIP THOSE CLOTHES OFF AND GET ER READY FOR SHIP, they'll sell like hotcakes!"

considering the other characters in the game, i think she fits in fine.  funny the people on /v/ screaming OMG FURRAYYY, ignoring the fact that tao is in the game.

Yeah, Makoto will be pretty cool.

Also, near as I can tell regular Nu is going to be a DLC character as a sort of Unlimited Lambda. Mu, the new Nu, is totally new. She has an enormous sword to fight with and no one knows what she can do.

YES.  AND THEY ACTUALLY HAVE CO-OP MULTIPLAYER.

I've been in a Torchlight mood lately and have been playing the shit out of it.  The lack of multiplayer sort of makes me sad (though I can understand the reasons why they wouldn't have it -- small company, budget title, etc -- but it still makes me sad).  I heard that some enterprising third-parties did release a multiplayer mod for Torchlight, but I have yet to check it out.

On another note, there's like 5 Wii games I want. I was wondering if Little Kings story was worth 30 and if mad world was worth 20? Also is No More Heros 2, Sin and Punishment 2, and UR MR GAY 2 worh the money?

I want to buy at least one of these along with Other M when it comes out, but I should probably wait a bit for other m.

All of those games were worth full price, other than Mad World. Little King's Story was the best game of the year when it came out. Seriously. There are so many levels on which that game operates storywise it's incredible. It's childish, serious, funny, and contemplative all at the same time. It's also becoming very rare so yeah I'd get it at $30.

All three of the last games were unbelievably good. S&P2 has online leaderboards and will keep you nice and busy. Galaxy 2 is the best 3D platformer. Seriously.

Hmm, by the sounds of it the new elder scrolls should either kick ass, and have faces that don't look like a pile of mud, or will run even worse than the previous games and explode the moment you try to do anything. Hopefully the new in-house engine will be better than the painful monstrosity that was the old engine.

Yeah it better, the grass in oblivion nearly killed my computer, but even if it didn't I'd turn it off anyways because the process of see deer 50ft, shoot with arrow, and then spending 40 minutes searching through the grass for it was a pain, this process was applicable to all killable things.

I was referring more to the fact that you had to have a computer about twice as powerful as the box advertises to run oblivion at a decent speed. (which also applied to morrowind)

Yeah, you know it's bad when a system that was built two years after the game was released (using components that Bethesda couldn't even dream about and that is capable of rendering Crysis with a silky smooth framerate) had stutters and stops here and there.  I don't even want to talk about the system that I had when the game was released.  The system met almost all of the recommended requirements (the only thing that fell behind was the CPU -- I had a 2.8GHz Pentium 4 when the game recommended a 3.0GHz) and the game was borderline unplayable (and, naturally, OC'ing that CPU to ~3.0GHz made absolutely no difference).

Luckily, it seems like 2010's (well, late 2009 is probably more accurate) hardware fares a bit better.  My current system can manage 1200p with everything maxed out.  Took long enough. ;)

But yeah, it really feels like your just getting more and more for how much you pay for a computer. Maybe someday in the near future (next 10-20 years) Buying a computer that's capable of tearing apart the latest game at max settings will cost less than $1000... (Still makes me QQ about computer prices)
Title: Re: games you look forward to in 2008 and beyond
Post by: Spectere on December 14, 2010, 10:58:47 AM
I've taken a liking to doing incremental upgrades, so my latest significant upgrade (a motherboard, CPU, and memory swap) cost me around $600-700.  Not bad considering the dramatic increase in computing performance and when you consider that my old set cost as much as that did in early 2008.

Hopefully technologies like PCI-E and SATA remain stable enough that upgrades like that stay practical (so far so good!).  AGP was a big, bloody mess.  Nothing is worse than an expansion slot type that has a number of different slot types and several different voltages that it could run on.  That would be like if there were a varient of PCI that used half the voltage and ran double the speed, but if you were to put an older PCI card in then your system wouldn't boot.  Bad, bad, bad.
Title: Re: games you look forward to in 2008 and beyond
Post by: Bobbias on December 14, 2010, 04:52:38 PM
Yeah... I never knew AGP was such a retarded "standard". Glad I moved to a mobo with SATA and PCI-E when I did that old upgrade. But yeah, my brother has a new GT 240, and even though that's not exactly high end, it makes a HUGE difference (I wish my laptop could be upgraded to better graphics without major hardware hacks.)

Portal 2 as well, I'm actually looking forward to it more and more.

Also Battlefield 3 sounds amazing if they can pull it off properly. The Witcher 2 sounds amazing, a well polished Witcher game might keep me inside for weeks on end. I'm also more then likely going to buy Dawn of War 2 Retribution when it comes out.

I'm also really tempted to pick up a PS3 or a 360. If I can find a dirt cheap one (no way in hell I'm buying a used 360). I want to play MvC3, SSF4AE, L.A. Noire, Max Payne 3, and Dark Souls. There's probably a few more I can think of, but this is just off the top of my head.

Also Stacking sounds awesome.

That bit about all guns having selectable fire modes makes me so happy. I'm just mad about how dumbed down shooters have become, and how specific guns are now known as the 3 round burst gun.
Title: Re: games you look forward to in 2008 and beyond
Post by: Spectere on March 09, 2011, 01:18:15 AM
I love the ability to change fire modes in shooters and definitely applaud their decision to go that route.

There's a very good reason why automatic rifles have burst fire settings in real life, and I find it annoying that I'm forced to use some weapons in full auto in semi-realistic (emphasis on "semi") games, especially when no soldier would, in their right mind, ever use said weapons in a fully automatic setting.
Title: Re: games you look forward to in 2008 and beyond

You have no idea how LITTLE people actually know that. My friend tried to argue that Call of Duty had realistic weapon spread/spray/whatever and he said that CSS is what it would be like if people had baby arms.

I sometimes hate him, he can be painfully bullheaded and half the time he can be painfully gullible.

My friend tried to argue that Call of Duty had realistic weapon spread/spray/whatever and he said that CSS is what it would be like if people had baby arms.

Wow.  Yeah, okay.

I've fired an AR-15 designed for civilian use (i.e. semi-auto only) before.  While I can say that rifles are deadly accurate, even for unexperienced users (I was able to get a reasonably tight spread at 100 yds, and the biggest gun I'd fired before that was a .22 pistol), they definitely do kick.  The stock definitely helps to steady the rifle, but I could imagine the thing going a little crazy if you tried to do more than burst fire with it.

And bullet spread is the least of Call of Duty's issues.  It's probably one of the least balanced shooters in existence.

It's sad that it has a lot of guns, yet everyone only seems to use a select few (the FAMAS, the Mac11, the M60, the FAL and maybe a few more).

God I hope this game is good. It seems like it could help do the combat in 40K justice (despite the small scale fights, trying to get 40k sized fights into a game would be rather hard). I just hope the melee combat is decent, the shooting looks fairly impressive so far.

and this.

I really hope this turns out well, it looks like there is a ton of practical and purely aesthetic customization. Plus, they evidently delayed it to fix balance issues, so I'm hoping for the best.

So WH40K spess muhreen, Brink, Witcher 2, Battlefield 3, and Portal 2. I think that's almost everything I'm interested in.

I hate to be "that guy" but I never really saw the appeal of Mortal Kombat, and it honestly makes me upset when people try to put it on the same level as SF. I really do hope the new game is good, but I've never liked MKs inputs, they have absolutely no flow to them (forward forward button press for a slow projectile? really?).
Title: Re: games you look forward to in 2008 and beyond

I didn't really like that either, but a better way to do it, is when you're jumping forward or backwards, input the forward forward or back back button combo, and once you land, hit the attack button to unleash the special right away. Also, I stopped playing MK when the deadly alliance and all those others came in. But this new one looks fucking amazing and can';t wait for it.

super street fighter II hd remix
street fighter 4
anything on ggpo or supercade
sfxt netcode seems acceptable now
soulcalibur v
skullgirls (uses ggpo, so refer to above)

i wish i could put mortal kombat on that list, but despite being a really fun game, the netcode is very poor.

Skullgirls seems really fun so far (for about the 10 minutes I've played)

Looking forward to Assassins Creed 3 and Borderlands 2. Maybe Far Cry 3

im going to hold off on giving an opinion on skullgirls until i put more time into the game.

feels like blazblue, with some mvc2 elements.  whether this is good or bad, i will say after i put some 40 or so hours into the game.  im not much of an anime game player, but i give every fighting game a chance now a days.

visually however, the game looks fantastic.

Thanks actually, one of my biggest pet peeve's is someone forming an opinion too quickly.

Notch's new game.

Basically, the idea is that you are dumped into a nearly dead galaxy in a spaceship mostly consisting of 1988 era technology. You have a fully programmable emulated computer that runs even when your offline available.

Not much else is known about it, other than specifications on how the CPU and some basic hardware will work. There are people who have built emulators for it.

http://0x10co.de is one of them with an online interface where you can write code and have it run and debugged right from your browser.

The thing about the computer is that EVERYTHING must be user written. Notch will not be writing programs for you to use. Of course, there will be plenty of people who don't know how to program, so he has plans for some out of game (and likely in-game as well) distribution system where people can exchange programs written for the computer.

I've been playing around with an IDE/Emulator environment someone put together and am learning how to get stuff working right now. I've got about 330 lines of assembly language code written so far.

Glad to see Diablo 3 launch go so terribly, always on DRM is terrible and this is one reason why.

Can't wait till a stable b.net private server emulator pops up.

I wonder how much of D3 is server side anyway...

I'm still on the fence over Diablo, I'm hoping Max Payne 3 is good since I found a site selling it for dirt cheap, I'm just waiting for some personal feed back from people I know (sup guys).

Outside of that, Guild Wars 2 and Planetside 2 look like they MIGHT be amazing. Still waiting on the Dark Soul's PC port to come out, I just really hope it's decent.

HEART FULL OF CAUTIOUS OPTIMISM.

N-N-NECRO POSTT

simcity

that is all (maby sc2 expansion, but...cmon, simcity)

tekken tag tournament 2 (steptember)
virtua fighter 5 final showdown (summer)
xcom enemy unknown (fall)

may as well add to this since i bought all of these since then

tekken tag tournament 2 is very good and i would play it more if i wasnt lazy and if my fightan partner would fucking buy it

virtua fighter 5 final showdown is also a good game, has a great training mode, and great netcode...but i dont like the game

"bu bu bu you said it was good vlad"  yeah, i can admit it is a good game, but it doesnt mean i have to like it.  feels a bit too guess oriented for my tastes

xcom is fucking good and you should buy it, yeah i said buy it as in pay money for a new copy of the game so firaxis will get money and make another one
